  1. We could improve the defense without parting with a bat.
  2. I doubt we add any big bats, this winter. I could see us swapping a LHB like Abreu for his clone who bats RH'd, but even that is a long shot. (Better to trade for pitching, anyway.)
  3. I wonder why the talk of SEA trading a top pitcher ever gets started, but it seems to happen every year. Maybe the fact that their GM makes 365 trades a year has something to do with it. Could they trade Castillo and sign Snell?
  4. Then, trade a mess of prospects for a mess of sightly above average pitchers known for eating innings.
  5. We will miss the RHB, but maybe Story can make some of that up. Casas does okay vs RHPs, so he will help, too. Mayer, Anthony and Teel will not help our RHB issue.
  6. Mayer's injury history might be just as frightening. I actually like the DHam-Romy 2B platoon, and Romy can back up 1B, in a pinch. If grissom beats out Romy, fine. What might work is if Mayer and Story time their injuries just right and we never go a game without one being healthy. That would probably be all we need. Sad, but true.
  7. Just do it before Jan 1st!
  8. 6.0 to 4.3 on fangraphs. Duran, Duran.
  9. I think we don't replace the departing O'Neill, despite our need for a big RHB. Our opening Day OF: LF Duran (Ref) CF Rafaela (Duran) RF Abreu (Ref) By mid season, if Anthony joins the crowd, we'd need Rafaela to play 2B/SS to get enough PAs for everyone, or make a trade (Abreu?)
  10. When Casas sees his control years go, he will sign with someone else, and Devers will move to 1B. Book it. I seriously doubt we trade Casas, and we aren't getting an ace for him, anyway, so he's not going anywhere. Now, maybe a Casas + a top 4 prospect might get an ace with 3-5 years of control, but who knows?
  11. You don't think they ever discussed moving the bad defender, Devers to another position? Personally, I don't think it happens for another 3-4 years, like when Casas's control ends, but Devers would be a plus defender at 1B in a short time. (Casas is not a plus defender at 1B, so win-win situations should be discussed.)
  12. Except many are asking for Devers to move to his position, implying a Casas trade or a move to DH and a Yoshi trade.
  13. I do think they felt he'd grow into the 2B position and become decent on D, and better than EValdez, Reyes, Sogard, Westbrook...
  14. How many posters have forgotten Gio, already?
  15. He didn't realize he was running on JH's treadmill. Running full out and getting nowhere, fast.
  16. His "s***** D" at SS was not supposed to translate to 2B. Yes, he struggled in his second year in the bigs (2023,) but Grissom did look like our best chance at having a decent FT 2Bman for 2024. It did not work out, at all.
  17. We seem to keep players we know will not play SS playing there too long. It would be nice to have a 3 combo of Story-Mayer-Campbell. SS: L Mayer/ R Story 2B: R Story/ R Campbell How much trade value does DHam have? Could we trade him for Renfroe? (LOL!)
  18. I'm liking Dobbins more and more. BTW, Elmer's last 9 starts: 40.1 IP 10 Hits is off-the-charts great! 1.56 ERA (7 ERs) 19 BBs hurts 34 K's is not great They both might jump players in tandem.
  19. We will need help, but the teams ahead of us play each other, so we know they will get some losses, there. We have to take care of our own business. We play AZ next and go the Mets in early SEP, but otherwise this next stretch looks like our best chance to put together a nice stretch. We need to start by learning how to win at home: 3 v AZ (72-56) is not easy 5 v TOR (59-68) Then, continue doing well on the road: 3 @ DET (62-65) 3 @ NYM (66-61 but playing much better) Followed by hitting the CWS hard at home for 3 games. This is 17 games. I'm thinking even 10-7 or 9-8 won't be enough. We need to be sitting pretty by SEP 9th, when we start this stretch: 3 BAL 4@NYY 3@TBR 3 MIN 3@TOR 3 TBR
  20. Call it "luck" or "good fortune," I happen to think Criswell has done a more than decent job as a SP'er with the Sox. ERAs as SP (7 or more GS) 3.01 Houck 3.88 Criswell 4.25 Crawford 4.70 Pivetta 4.80 Bello OPSA .616 Houck .704 Crawford .726 Criswell .750 Pivetta .771 Bello Counting his RP games, which have been worse for Criswell, look at ERA vs FIP -0.51 Crawford 4.25/4.76 -0.17 Houck 3.01/3.18 +0.25 Bello 4.80/4.55 +0.27 Pivetta 4.70/4.43 +0.49 Criswell 4.41/3.92 FIP of all Sox pitchers with 48+ IP 3.18 Houck 3.92 Criswell 4.14 Weissert 4.43 Pivetta (23 HRs does not help) 4.55 Bello (3.4 BB/9 hurts) 4.69 Wink 4.76 Crawford (28 HRs really hurts) 4.84 Kelly 5.59 Anderson We hear a lot about Brez's botch trade of Sale and Gio signing, but signing Criswell is rarely mentioned, at all. The team is 8 games over .500 and are 10-4 in Criswell's starts. Do the math!
  21. I think he believes Duran's speed and athleticism would allow him to make more plays in RF than Abreu does, and those extra outs would compensate or overcome the arm deficiencies. I think he might be right. My observations have concluded that Abreu has "just missed" making a lot of what would have been "big plays." Maybe Duran makes those plays look easy and others that Abreu didn't even come close to. I think it's a close call. I do think Duran>Ref in RF.
  22. I have to agree. If the Sox were talking "full throttle," last winter and cut salary totals and added just Gio, why should we expect a Price-like deal after silence?
  23. GRE got no-hit, but Dean and Paez combined for 8 IP, 2 hit, one run pitching with 13 Ks. Dean was pulled early due to 5BB in 3.1 IP.
  24. Part of the reason Rafaela is on some of these lists is because he has way more PAs than all but Devers and Duran, but we should not short change him. He's done okay on O, and adjusted after a slow start and has stayed pretty steady at around .750-.800 just about every 10 games since early June.
