    Awesome play, awesome look on the guy's face. I loved it. I have decided that I don't care if Jackie hits .180 (okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea), I want him on the team next season!

    I am sure I am in the minority, but I don't think it would be the craziest of ideas to take Papelbon back. I wouldn't take him for the $11 mil that he is owed, but if the Nats really want to get rid of him and are willing to eat half his salary or more, I'd take a flyer on him. He runs his mouth to the media sometimes, but as far as I can recall, he was never a clubhouse problem while with the Sox. As we all know all too well, we need some bullpen help. Paps is still a very effective closer. That said, re-signing him would have to be with the understanding that he might or might not be the closer, depending on how Koji bounces back next season.

    IMO, Paps was right to call Harper out for not running hard on the fly ball out. Where he went wrong was in physically assaulting Harper.

    What does that matter? Are they a playoff contender or not? Did Theo do a great job of rebuilding that team or not?

    August and September mean nothing to you because you don't want to acknowledge that Ben actually did a great job with his long term plan. Dombrowski is in a great position. He will be able to reap the benefits of Ben's hard work.

    The Cubs would be leading or tied for the lead in every other division except for the one that they play in. Considering the number of games they play against the Cardinals and the Pirates, their record is even more impressive. Anyone who is not willing to admit that Theo did a great job of rebuilding that franchise and making them contenders is just being stubborn. His team is even one year ahead of what most people thought they would be. I might have to admit that Theo is more of a genius than I gave him credit for.

    I never understood the lack of love for Papelbon, from a baseball standpoint. Even when he struggled, he was one of the best closers in baseball. I would have loved for the Sox to re-sign him, just not for the price that the Phillies signed him for. I didn't see Paps as a clubhouse cancer while he was with the Red Sox. However, I got the impression that he was with both the Phillies and the Nationals. Of course, they say that one's true character comes out when things are going bad. Things went well for him while in Boston. Not so much with the Phillies or Nationals.

    That can be done without going to the other extreme in team philosophy. See Theo. The team, as currently constituted, without a #1 starter and with a crappy bullpen, has been 28-22 in August and September. That's a .560 winning %, which would work out to 91 wins over a full season. Think of how many wins the BP has cost us over that span. Say what you want about the team playing with no pressure, blah, blah, blah, but this team is not that far off people.

    Personally, if Dombrowski signs 2 pitchers, I would start Rodriguez and Owens in AAA and keep the others for depth. I know that that is not a popular opinion, but the more options and flexibility you have, the better. Start the season with newly acquired #1, newly acquired #2/3, Buchholz, Porcello, and Miley. Kelly goes to the BP, which gives the team one less BP position to fill. How nice would it be to have someone as good as Rodriguez as depth to fill in when one of the starters gets injured or underperforms? If Dombrowski only adds one starter this offseason, Rodriguez starts the season with the big club. Koji and Tazawa should be fine next season after resting this offseason. Add Kelly as a possible late inning reliever. I have a feeling that one of Kelly or Miley will be traded as part of a package this offseason. Regardless of how the pitching shakes out, the fact remains that Ben has left the team in great shape. Fix the pitching with a couple of key moves, and we're good to go.

    Exactly. I'm guessing the better pitching performance the last 2 months is a combination of adjustments the pitchers have made, improved leadership behind the plate, and improved defense. We'll never know the full impact on the pitching staff of losing Vazquez and Hanigan, but judging by the way the starters have pitched recently, I'm thinking it was pretty big.

    I think we're in good shape. Our position players should be set for several years, including Hanley and/or Pablo at 1st and/or 3rd. They might not be worth their contracts, but they won't play for a combined -2.2 WAR either. I look for both to rebound to decent levels next season. There might not be any impending talent in the minors, but with the number of youngsters already on the big league roster, impending talent is not needed. We do have some very good talent 2-3 years away. Fix the pitching and the team should contend. That is doable this offseason.

    I agree that some changes in the FO were necessary. What I don't want to see happen is for Dombrowski to take the team's philosphy to the other extreme. I don't want him trading away the farm. I don't want him signing massive contracts left and right. I don't want him going old school on us and shunning analytics. Despite the lack of success the team has had the past two seasons, I completely agree with Ben's general philosophy behind building a team. We'll see what happens this offseason.

    Well, the philosophy they used in 2013 worked, and it worked extremely well. The FO probably went into 2014 with a mostly "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. Where I think they went wrong that season was in depending on too many youngsters in key positions with no viable back up plan in case they faltered, which they did. I would have preferred more focus on pitching for this season, but the FO opted to focus on strengthening the offense instead. There was a premium on offense last offseason, so I can understand why they went in the direction that they did. While they did not sign an ace for this season, the pitching, in theory, should have been good enough. If you don't believe that, look at the way the starters have pitched the past two months.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Buchholz is healthy this offseason, meaning he'll be ready to go by next spring, picking up his option is a no brainer.

    Three games is always too small a sample to judge anything by, but I'm sure he has at least piqued management's interest. It is unlikely that he will continue to pitch as well as he has in these three games, but he should be a good addition to any rotation. His K/W ratio is a good sign. I don't see where there will be any room in the rotation to start the season unless Miley or Kelly is traded. Signing him to a minor league contract would be ideal, but he is sure to get a decent major league deal from some team.

    Agreed. There's a decent chance that one is moved. It's highly unlikely that both are moved. Though not official yet, Pablo has all but been shut down for the season because he is still battling pneumonia. Get well soon Pablo.

    IMO, a team should always play hard and play the right way. Do not disrespect the integrity of the game. Besides, the Sox are now on that all important mission to finish in 3rd place! As SoxHop says, third place or bust!

    JBJ, like all players, will go through his ups and downs. As long as his downs are not prolonged, and the entire team doesn't go into a hitting slump at the same time, the team should be okay with his bat.
