  1. For me it's not so much about the price as it is about the length of the contract. While I know it will never happen, it would take 5 years or fewer for me to not shudder.
  2. Way to avoid the question.
  3. No, not really. The needs of this team are certainly easily enough fixed to make the team competitive in 2016. Not that it's going to be a piece of cake, but by no means will it require a complete overhaul.
  4. Yeah, I think she has a nice smile too.
  5. Nice week indeed. Actually, it was a great week once the Yankees were gone.
  6. This is a good way to think about it. OTOH, the Jays are mostly responsible for making sure the Yankees didn't advance too far in the playoffs. They get brownie points for that.
  7. I keep going back and forth. I really have no issue with either team winning. In fact, I wouldn't have minded the Astros or the Rangers winning either. I'm just looking for a good series.
  8. Way to avoid the question.
  9. Hmmm, who to pull for in the ALCS??? The NLDS is a no brainer. Go Cubs!
  10. I fully admit my hypocrisy on this matter. Can't help it.
  11. I don't see Castillo being traded either. While his value is still speculative, it won't take much for him to be worth his contract if he can stay healthy. If he plays up to the potential the scouts were describing in him, he could end up being a very good deal, despite the first year being more or less a lost season.
  12. I really was hoping that the Sox would have finished in 3rd or 4th place this year. The "3 last place finishes in 4 years" argument is almost as bad as the "1918" chant used to be. Again, we have to take whatever Dombrowski says right now with a grain of salt, but he has stated the position players are more or less set. A #1 starter, a back up closer along with a few other pen arms, and this team should be good to go.
  13. I think the biggest mistake made in the 2013 offseason was relying on too many youngsters for 2014 without having a good back up plan. Outside of that, I felt good about both the 2014 and 2015 teams going into the season. In both years, there were a lot of underperformances that I don't think could have been foreseen. I do not think that the FO did a poor job in either of those seasons.
  14. So, what happens if the Sox sign Price to a ludicrous contract, and for whatever reason, he can't sustain his level of success in Boston and becomes just a mediocre pitcher, making him a bust on day 1? Will you still blame the FO? More importantly, how will the team be able to recuperate from that? I realize that Price is not likely to be a bust from day 1, it could happen. It's a lot of eggs to put into one basket.
  15. I agree that the Price/Papi thing is blown out of proportion. If the Sox offer him a contract to his liking, he would have no problem signing with the Sox. Personally, I get the feeling that he would like to remain in Toronto, especially with the team doing as well as they're doing.
  16. Good posts in this thread Bell. I might still shudder at $160 million, but not not nearly as much as I'd shudder at $220 million.
  17. Excellent post SoxHop. The key for the FO is to be able to balance between the short and long term goals. Too much emphasis on winning now by signing the superstars at the expense of the team's future is not the best way to build a competitive franchise.
  18. Ramirez, Sandoval, and Porcello are not in the same category as Price, but nor are the contracts that they received in comparison to what Price will receive. I thought the Sandoval contract was too long, but I don't think any of those contracts you mentioned were ridiculous at the time they were signed. They are all terrible at the moment, but to me, they're only terrible in hindsight.
  19. I agree. As far as Utley's slide goes, the Mets got the ultimate revenge in winning the NLDS. I do fully expect that Utley will receive some more payback next season though.
  20. I have no problem with Bautista's bat flip, although had it been against the Red Sox, I would not be happy with it. That said, Bautista has to know that if he's going to show up a pitcher like that, he should expect to take a fastball to the buttocks the next time the two meet. I have no problem with that either. I like the idea of players policing themselves, as long as it's done correctly and no one goes head hunting. That said, if the pitcher doesn't like someone showing him up, perhaps he should make a better pitch.
  21. It affects the long term outlook of my team. It very well could affect the quality of the team in 5 years or so.
  22. Of course. Hence, the ownership's philosophy to not sign older players to long contracts, along with their philosphy to sign players to fewer years at more money per year. I agree with both lines of thinking.
  23. Looking forward to tonight's game. Go Mets.
  24. As long as it's not a player doing it against the Red Sox or a Yankees player doing it, I enjoy it. It's part of the game, and part of the entertainment.
  25. No, the large contracts make me shudder because I don't like large contracts.
