  1. What do you think the reason is that the Yankees own the Twins?
  2. I have nothing against the Reds, and would actually like to see them make it deep into the playoffs. That said, the NL team I have been rooting for since this offseason is the Padres.
  3. Well, that is the plan. Long term sustainability. To get there, you have to show some patience up front.
  4. I am a firm believer in Bloom's philosophy. What's wrong with that?
  5. That depends on what you mean by 'show it'. If they continue to play like they've played the last month, then maybe not. In that case, however, I don't think getting Rizzo would have made the difference.
  6. They will plug their current holes. Will it be with the big splashy type move that many want? Probably not. On paper, though, next year's team will project to be better than this year's team.
  7. Henry and the Red Sox will continue to have payrolls right around the luxury tax limit each year, going over in some, resetting in others.
  8. Hogwash that winning doesn't matter anymore. Pure hogwash.
  9. It's not like the Red Sox are penny pinchers though. Yes, they have seemingly been so the last year and this (Thanks Dave!), but that's because they have to rebuild. In theory, they could exceed the tax limit every year. In reality, that's not going to happen. Besides, it's smart to try to build a better team with less money. What's wrong with that idea?
  10. Momentum is very real as a descriptor of what has happened. Where it fails is in its predictive ability. Momentum means nothing going forward. As someone who has played sports at fairly competitive levels, I experienced 'momentum' first hand. But it can and does change in an instant, so again, it means nothing going forward. The Yankees had great momentum in the 2004 ALCS. Until they didn't.
  11. Sadly, the Padres have been in a free fall, not unlike that of the Red Sox.
  12. I think it's fair to say that in most of those seasons, the Yankees had a stronger team. Even in the seasons that the Twins made the postseason, the Yankees had a better record. That still doesn't fully explain the extreme lopsidedness of their records against each other, but that's some of it. Outside of that, it's one of those unanswerable mysteries of baseball.
  13. I'm not sure that I agree with this at the MLB level. I think that the players who have made it to the bigs have the mental toughness and composure to succeed at this level, including in high leverage situations. Yes, I have seen players have choking moments. All players do. I don't think there's enough consistency in any player's choke patterns to call him a choker.
  14. I don't believe that Kershaw is a choker.
  15. Momentum is one of those descriptive things as opposed to being predictive. When it comes to determining whether a team that is on a roll will win or lose its next game, it's basically a coin flip.
  16. Yes, more or less. Or bad luck. Randomness.
  17. That could be the case. It could just as easily not be the case. I'm just saying momentum has no predictive value. It's not a repeatable skill.
  18. Good management is going to take the blame on their own shoulders when things go wrong. They're not going to blame the players. IMO, the FO did the right thing at the deadline. I'm not talking about particular moves, but I'm talking about their overall philosophy. The team is good enough to win as is.
  19. I believe that the players care more about winning this year than they do about long term sustainability. Of course, that goes along with the idea of how easy it is to spend other people's money. As the owner and the GM, you can't think like that if you want to build a franchise that will contend year in and year out. You just can't. Did the lack of deadline moves deflate the team to the point of collapse? Possibly, but I find that hard to believe based on their consistent resiliency the first half of the season. I think the timing of this poor play with the trade deadline is mere coincidence. The team was due for some regression, just not to this extent. The team is now due for some regression in the positive direction. This is the time where Cora needs to earn his paycheck.
  20. Things will be different this offseason. Less underwhelming. I am guessing we will be over the luxury tax limit next year if there are deals that make sense. That said, don't expect a Dombrowski type offseason.
  21. Momentum is another one of those things that is largely a myth. It means nothing. Try not to take it too hard when the Sox knock the Yankees out in the WC game. If you make it that far.
  22. I'm not sure I'd be that excited about your 'reinforcements'. Your D squad plays better than your A squad.
