  1. Read an interesting article at Fangraphs yesterday about how the league has not adjusted to Betts' power yet. Maybe its because he bats leadoff or maybe its because he doesn't fit the physical profile of a power hitter, but pitchers are challenging Mookie much more than they typically challenge power hitters. Mookie has seen the 5th highest rate of strikes of any hitter over the past year, despite the fact that he ranks in the top 25 in power (ISO). In other words, opposing pitchers haven't learned yet.
  2. JBay at the game mojo! We got this! Go Sox!
  3. I do agree with you on the point of umpires making the game all about them. IMO, umpires need to be held more accountable. If they are not performing up to par and/or regularly letting their egos get in the way of their calls, they need to be replaced. That said, I think the emotion that surfaces during the games in tense situations is part of the beauty of sports. For me, the human element, including with umpires, is huge.
  4. I am always impressed with people who can remember every detail of a game that took place 30 or more years ago. I can't remember much from the last game I went to, and I can't even claim alcoholic influence, much less remember anything from my first game. I do remember going to a game and seeing my then idol Clemens pitch and win against the Yankees, but I don't remember any specifics of the game.
  5. IMO, having an automated strike zone would not necessarily change the game for the better. One of the things that is so wonderful about the sport is its randomness. Umpires add to that randomness, and the imperfection of humans calling balls and strikes adds some interesting wrinkles to the game. Also, umpires have gotten a lot better in calling balls and strikes since pitch/fx was installed in all the ballparks about 10 years ago. They are continuing to improve as the technology allows them to see and understand exactly what types of mistakes are being made. It is likely that the large majority of "missed" calls really aren't bad calls, but rather they are borderline calls that could realistically go either way. FTR, automated strike zones will not be perfect either. Personally, I am against the idea, as I am against instant replay in general.
  6. Kelly and the offense will shut Thorne up again, times 3. Get it done boys! Go Sox!
  7. The term "power" in "power ratings" is not meant to be a measure of actual power that hitters or pitchers have, but rather a measure of the overall strength of the team. It has little to do with just power hitters or power pitchers.
  8. David, your point about not putting a low OBP guy in the leadoff spot is certainly valid. Much of the reason why Farrell and others are not willing to move him down is because Mookie fits the conventional profile of a leadoff hitter. Another big part of the reasoning is that the offense is leading or near the top in virtually every category. Farrell has the luxury of being patient with him. If the offense were scuffling, you can bet that Mookie would be moved down in the order, despite the fact that it's "too soon". And right on cue as I'm typing this, Mookie hits one out on the 2nd pitch of the game. LOL Go Mookie!
  9. Well, it's not quite as simple as that, but yes, I agree with your overall point. As I said before, I'm a worrier. Not on my list of things to worry about are Mookie and our lineup.
  10. I am not a fan of long term contracts, and by long term, I mean anything longer than 4 years. I know it's sometimes a necessary evil, and there are a select few who are worth breaking the bank for. Trout would be one of them if we were in need of an outfielder, which we aren't. It is always better to build from within and fill the holes with smaller free agent signings or trades. It always begins with a strong farm.
  11. Best wishes and congrats to the JBJ family! Let the Rusney era begin!
  12. Agree with your posts Bell.
  13. I love both players and hope that they are both with the Sox past their control years, but I just can't fathom a 12 year deal. So for me, that would be a 'no'. I would try to lock them both up with shorter extensions, , going with a higher AAV. With the possibility that neither one would accept a deal locking them up now for fewer years, the best plan continues to be to develop the farm and hope that the next wave of players is ready or nearly ready when the current wave leaves. That said, I would rather give a 12 year deal to one of our young arb players than sign a free agent to 8 year deal.
  14. The Sox need to shut Thorne up again tonight. Get it done boys! Go Sox!
  15. I have always had a problem with the idea of "I don't need stats, I know what I see" type of argument. I have no doubt that people who make statements along those lines are very knowledgeable baseball fans who do know what they see. I am not trying to say otherwise. That said, the two things about that that I take issue with: 1. Your eyes will lie to you, often due to bias. 2. You cannot make precise and valid comparisons between players who are fairly close in talent level without looking at the data. For enjoyment purposes, the eye test is enough. For debating and assessing on a forum, I don't think the eye test alone is sufficient. That said, stats alone are also not sufficient.
  16. I would like to see these players who are scuffling man up and agree to take an AAA assignment even though they know they can't be sent down without their permission. IMO, it would be in both Clay's and the team's best interest if he would go to Pawtucket and work through whatever his problems are. He knows he's been hurting the team, so why not agree to be sent down to figure it out? Now, Clay might very well end up working out in the pen, but there's as good a chance that he won't. Either way, he is more valuable to the team if he can find himself as a starter and be "Good Clay" again.
  17. Hi Jete! During Bradley's streak, he was getting most of the attention while Bogaerts was quietly putting together a very solid run of his own. The youngsters and our team as a whole have been very fun to watch this season.
  18. You shouldn't David. IMO, I think the biggest problem with the influx of BDC posters is that some of the posters are trying to make this forum just like BDC. This is Talksox, not BDC. Different rules, different moderation, different posters to interact with. YOTN really and sincerely does an excellent job. IMO, he has been more than fair in enforcing the long standing rules and trying to get the new posters to understand them. He has not threatened anyone with being banned, nor has he deleted anyone's posts. Rather than trying to make this a BDC board and community within Talksox, try accepting and adapting Talksox for the way it is. It is an excellent forum. I am not speaking to you personally David, nor am I speaking to the majority of BDC posters. I think it's only a few, but those few have been persistent in trying to turn Talksox into BDC, which it is not. Just my 2 cents, and I hope I didn't offend anyone.
  19. On the topic of bad umps, first and foremost, I really, really hope we never see the day come where we have an automated strike zone. IMO, if the umps are not performing up to standards, give them the boot and hire other umps who can do a better job. That said, the technology does currently exist to have a pretty good automated zone which adjusts to batter's crouches, etc. In terms of the particular game in question, the umpiring was pretty terrible.
  20. Best Mod Ever!
  21. Personally, I've never had a problem with Babe.
  22. I look forward to Wright and the Sox shutting Gary Thorne up. Get it done boys! Go Sox!
  23. This is the way I feel after tough losses like the one on Saturday. I think we as fans need the wins more than the players do. Thank goodness we salvaged the last game of that series. I don't think anyone, including me, wanted to see Clay come into the game in that situation, but to his credit, he got the job done. Good to see.
  24. Welcome Danny, good to see you.
