  1. According to StatCorner, he was 3rd in Plus calls per game with 1.8, behind Hank Conger (2.21) and Jose Molina (1.81). He was worth 12.2 runs above average in pitch framing. Much better than this year so far.
  2. I just read that Groome was "upset" that the Sox drafted him because he had a deal for more money with the team that picked after the Sox. That doesn't sit right with me.
  3. Way to jinx him Kimmi!
  4. When all else fails, go with WAR. Nomar's best year in terms of WAR was 2000, when he was worth 7.6 WAR. Xander currently has a WAR of 4 in 63 games. He's on pace for a 10.3 WAR year.
  5. Colby Lewis will soon be pitching in the 9th, having put up a lot of goose eggs.
  6. As far as pitch framing stats go, from StatCorner, Vazquez currently ranks 30th out of 82 catchers listed with .21 Plus calls per game. Montero is the leader with 2.29 per game. The other Sox catchers numbers are Swihart with -.29, Leon with -.33, and Hanigan with -1.29. None of our catchers are doing particularly well in the area of pitch framing right now, which is surprising given their reputations (besides Swihart) for this skill.
  7. Statistical analysis aside, I think you have to put a lot of stock into how the pitchers praise Vazquez' work behind the plate. If nothing else, they feel comfortable and confident in throwing to him, and that, intangible as it may be, has to count for something.
  8. What you say about the older fans may be true, but saying that it is the result of not having automated strike zones would be a big stretch.
  9. I don't think that's the case Max.
  10. In terms of getting the most accurate calls, of course it's a no brainer. In terms of what gives fans the more enjoyable experience, it's a matter of personal preference.
  11. It is not quite that many. According to Fangraphs, in 2015, there was an average of 288 pitches thrown per game. Of those, batters swung at 46.7%. That means umpires called an average of 154 balls/strikes per game. At an error rate of 14%, that is 21-22 missed calls per game. I couldn't find any data on it, but I'm guessing that the majority of those missed calls were borderline. Now that said, I understand if those numbers are still unacceptable to some. I understand why some people want as close to perfection as possible. IMO, the tradeoff of accuracy for non-automated strike zones is worth it. IMO, baseball, played and umpired by people, was not meant to be perfect.
  12. Well if they add to your enjoyment of the game, then by all means, advocate for them. They (meaning the nets and the troughs) don't affect my enjoyment, so you're on your own.
  13. I don't know what "gray area" you're talking about. There is the 'strike zone', which is divided into 9 regions, then there is the 'ball zone' around the strike zone, which is divided into 4 regions. Each of those zones is color coded to show the batters "hot zones". There is no gray area where the umpires can call a pitch either way and be right. From MLB.com: http://mlb.mlb.com/shared/components/gameday/v4/images/about/hotcoldzone.jpg "Use the hot/cold zones to find the pitch locations in which the current batter and pitcher perform their best, and where they struggle. The strike zone is divided into nine regions and balls are grouped into four regions, with each zone color-coded to indicate whether the batter or pitcher is hot or cold in that zone." If you have information specifically stating that Pitch/FX gives umpires leeway in a gray area, please share the link, because I have not seen that.
  14. I would just like to point out that the Orioles' starters have an ERA of 4.77, worse than ours. Their overall ERA is 4.11, better than ours, but not by much.
  15. LOL I got a nice chuckle out of it.
  16. Good. There's no way we're losing this game.
  17. Nice pics Thunder. Except for the sideways thing. Too bad the team couldn't win for you.
  18. Me too. It makes me sick.
  19. That was a really sad 9th inning.
  20. You are awesome bosoxmal! You go on! I'm impressed that you can remember those details.
  21. The Sox have reportedly reached an agreement with their 2nd round pick Chatham for $1.1 million.
  22. From a report today, according to a "source", the Sox are willing to trade anyone except Benintendi and Moncada. They don't want to trade Devers either, but could be persuaded on him.
  23. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting any Sox players outside of some autographs. I met David Wright at a charity event at the bowling alley.
