  1. Statistically speaking, they are right. But at this point, it's close enough that I'm no longer willing to say that the Astros are the team to beat.
  2. The Sox can't get over confident or get ahead of themselves. They have to stay grounded and take it one game at a time.
  3. For most of the season, I have said that Houston remains the team to beat base on their outstanding run differential. I'm not sure that's the case anymore, even though they still edge us out in that statistic.
  4. As I've said before, we didn't need Sale. Seriously though, this gives the Sox the luxury of holding Sale out for another start.
  5. Isn't that the truth? I know several of us said that if we split, we'd be happy. I never imagined that we'd sweep the series. Awesome. Simply awesome!
  6. And oh, I never got a chance to say Woohoo! for the 4 game sweep. Let's go!
  7. The book on Swihart is too short as of now, but you absolutely have a valid point. I prefer defensive catchers, but you have to go with the best overall catcher. If Swihart plays well enough defensively to be better overall than Vaz or Leon, than you have to go with Swihart. I still really like the idea of keeping all three on the team once Vaz gets back.
  8. The fact that Cora did not play Swihart behind the plate until he absolutely had to is rather telling, even when both of our other catchers were reeling offensively. I don't think that's necessarily a knock on Swihart, but the confidence and trust that Cora has in the other two. That confidence and trust is being relayed to him by our pitchers.
  9. That is crazy. It's the kind of thing that makes baseball the best sport in the world.
  10. That is quite possible. In which case, better news for proponents of 10 years for Mookie.
  11. On the whole, the distraction factor hurts the batter in the box more than it hurts the pitcher and the defense.
  12. All of that stuff is taken into account Oldtimer. The stat geeks are very good at what they do. They understand all of the advantages versus the disadvantages, and they study all of that in depth. Having a runner on 1st base is more beneficial to the batter than having a runner on 2nd base.
  13. Or perhaps the Yankees just graduated a bunch of prospects, some of whom are on the DL, and the next set of top prospects are one or two years away.
  14. I have given Dombrowski credit for signing Cora since day one. For picking up LaRussa shortly afterward, not so much.
  15. These are the types of comments that are made when one knows the other person has a valid argument.
  16. For pulling a good move without blowing up the farm.
  17. FTR, I was completely on board with re-signing Masterson.
  18. Sometimes, but that's the job of the FO to be able to find the Beltres, Napolis, etc. You can also spend a lot of money and end up with the Crawfords and the Sandovals. At least with the Mastersons, it's usually only 1 or 2 years for a much smaller amount.
  19. Absolutely. Kimbrel was most definitely an overpay, in double whammy form. Both prospects and money.
  20. That is usually the case.
  21. Well, the drop off typically starts around age 30, so I was probably being overly optimistic with the first five years. By the same token, I was probably being overly pessimistic on the back end. However, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that we see a sharp decline around age 33 or 34.
  22. Fair enough.
  23. In terms of what I think we probably could have gotten him for and in terms of our need for an ace at that time, yes. That said, I'm not upset by the trade for Sale, in and of itself. As I've said many times, it's the magnitude of the prospects traded away in such a short period of time.
  24. Yup. This is why the stolen base is overrated. Not unimportant, but overrated.
