  1. Those are good stats. But as with all other stats, you have to look at the whole picture.
  2. I figured. I didn't want to go down that road.
  3. Ha.
  4. Cora said the other day that if this were crunch time, Price would be pitching. It sounds more cautionary than anything else.
  5. .500 happens tonight. WIN!!!
  6. Offense 50% Defense 50% No matter what percentage of the defense you want to equate to pitching, pitching is never going to be completely independent of fielding.
  7. LOL I am a big DIPS fan.
  8. Our offense should score some runs tonight. WIN!!!
  9. I didn't think Smith was that bad, considering where he's coming from. Weber did a good job. Our pitching, on the whole, held the Os to 4 runs. The Sox offense should be able to overcome that. Three lousy hits all night. None after the 5th inning, if I'm not mistaken. Oh well. Shake it off and win tonight.
  10. The Yankees BP currently has a save % of 61.54%. The Red Sox BP currently has a save % of 66.67%.
  11. I do not know what the exact percentages are, but I very much disagree with you that most of the team's defense is independent of the quality of fielders. This is why ERA is not a very good stat, and why the need for DIPS arose. I also disagree that hitting is at least 3 times as important as fielding. Preventing a run is just as important as scoring a run. A pitcher cannot prevent runs on his own.
  12. I'll never forget Middlebrooks saying that 'he lost the fire' when playing for the pennant chasing Red Sox. How does a youngster just starting off in the majors lose the fire? That didn't sit well with me.
  13. I don't believe that I have ever rooted for a Yankee player.
  14. No, Moon is right. He was really, really bad.
  15. ^^100% this.
  16. What you are saying is completely true when you get to the later innings. When you're still in the 5th or 6th innings, it's too early in the game to start making the 'do or die' moves that you would make in later innings. Similar to the aforementioned sac bunt. Playing for one run in the 6th inning is not typically the best % move.
  17. Why can't we get players like that?
  18. I know what Harmony was trying to show us. No need. We all know how bad this team has started off. Harmony can come see me in October.
  19. Sure, but it's about giving your team the best chance to win, on the whole. No one can predict what will happen in the later innings of the game, but based on those dreaded statistics and the game situations, a team is likely better off not using its best reliever too early in the game. It's the same idea with sac bunting and playing for one run before the 7th or 8th inning. Don't do it!
  20. To be fair, I should also state that the difference in win expectancy of having Barnes pitch the 8th versus having Brewer pitch the 8th isn't as large we'd expect it to be.
  21. Fair enough points. Perhaps saying that there is more pressure would not necessarily be true, but the 8th inning situation is definitely the higher leverage situation. I'd want my best reliever out there. As to your question about batting order, in what context do you mean? If you mean how does it impact the scoring in these high leverage situations, the 'batting order doesn't matter much' relates to the course of an entire season. In any particular game, I think we'd all prefer to see our top hitters up in these situations over a struggling JBJ or Leon. That said, the difference in win expectancy of having JD up to bat with bases loaded in the 9th versus having JBJ up to bat in the same situation isn't that great. I don't know the exact % difference, but I know it isn't that big.
  22. Some early Red Sox BP ranks in the AL for 2019 (2018 ranks in parentheses for comparison): Overall: 8th (8th) ERA: (9th) (4th) FIP: (5th) (3rd) IP: 6th (8th) HR/9: 11th (4th) K/BB: 3rd (9th) WHIP: 5th (6th) Save %: 66.7% (69.7%) This includes blown saves (holds) before the 9th inning.
  23. Which situation do you think holds more pressure? Facing the 3, 4, and 5 hitters with 2 men on base and 0 outs in the 8th inning, or facing the 7, 8, and 9 hitters with no men on base and 0 outs in the 9th inning? Also, I like Doritos.
