    I haven't really seen a consensus that your best hitter should be in the #2 spot. I think that kind of took on a life of its own on this forum. My understanding is that you should place your 3 best hitters in the 1, 2 and 4 spots, with better OBP batting higher in the order and better SLG batting 4th. Then the next best hitter should bat 5th, the next best hitter after that should bat 3rd. At any rate, if it comes down to a choice of batting JD 3rd or 4th, he should bat 4th for the reasons stated in my previous post. I don't see it counter-intuitive at all.

    Exactly. More power to Henry, I guess, if he wants to keep spending. I won't pretend that I'll be happy about it though.

    The way to build a strong franchise is to start with a strong farm, then fill the holes with free agency, not the other way around. Spending big should when needed should be a very occasional thing, not the norm.

    The problem with that is that too often, the 1 and 2 guys don't get on. So here comes your best hitter, batting with 2 outs and nobody on. Wasted potential. Put your best hitter in the 4th spot. He will either come up in the 1st inning with at least one runner on base, or he will lead off the 2nd inning.

    It's a waste of potential. But then again, it's more important to put the batters where they feel comfortable. Our 1-5 guys are all pretty good, so Cora really can't lose no matter what he decides to go with. I heard him comment that he was thinking about putting JD in the lead off spot. I, for one, would love to see that, just for the reaction that it would create (LOL), let alone that it would probably be a pretty good move.

    Quick check of some numbers: Last year, we scored an average of .60 runs in the first inning, and we scored in the first inning 53 times out of 162 games (32.7%). This year, we have scored an average of .44 runs in the first inning, and we have scored in the first inning 14 times out of 54 games (25.9%). It's probably nothing more than random factors, but I still like Mookie batting leadoff.

    I prefer Mookie at lead off as well. It may be my imagination, but it seems to me like the opposing pitcher has had a very easy first inning too many times.

    He has even said, as recently as this past offseason, that he would need to reset at some point. Nobody likes paying taxes.

    My cliff dwelling has also been based on the notion that an owner would not be willing to spend that kind of money to keep a team at the championship level. You need cost-controlled players, or so I thought. I will be happy from a fan's standpoint if Henry is willing to spend, spend, spend, but I can't condone that philosophy of building a team.

    We will likely need to add an arm or two to the pen before at the deadline. I just don't agree that we need to add the big money, superstar closer type.

    I also read that Sale had an 'undisclosed toe injury' to begin the season. I have no idea how that affected his velocity, but we now have "Toegate" to consider.

    It's time to move away from 'historical values'. Basing a reliever's salary on the number of saves he has is rather archaic.

    The true 'save' situation does not always occur in the 9th inning. Sometimes, the game has to be saved in the 7th or 8th innings.

    If Henry is willing to continue paying luxury tax penalties year after year, then there will be no cliff. I didn't think he (or any owner) would be willing to go that route, but he just might.

    I'm not trying to knock either Papelbon or Kimbrel. But Koji did not create drama like either one of them did. Every reliever is going to have a down moment now and then. Koji not walking people is exactly what I'm talking about. He came into the game and took care of business. Game over.

    Come playoff time, they will likely make a difference. Right now, and likely for the remainder of the regular season, having those guys out is not hurting you one bit. IMO, starting pitching was always a much bigger concern for the Yankees. German has been huge for you guys.
