  1. The pen pitched 8 innings yesterday and held a very potent Astros line up to 2 runs, not counting the starter Velazquez obviously. In the game before, Porcello and the pen held the same very potent Astros line up to 3 runs. IMO, the problem in our last 3 losses has been the offense's inability to get the big hit. Not our pitching, not our pen, not Cora. Also, Houston is simply on fire right now. Not only to they have the talent, but that talent is playing very well right now. Tip your hat to them and hope to win today's game.
  2. The pen might still be a problem, I agree with that. That said, I am not getting that vibe at all from Cora about not trusting his bullpen. Porcello was cruising with a decent pitch count. Additionally, he knew that we had a bullpen day coming up the next day. I don't think he would push the starters to go deeper because he was concerned about using a relief pitcher. That is so against his philosophy.
  3. Sale is pitching today. I haven't heard whether Leon is back yet or not. Regardless, Vazquez is a very good defensive catcher in his own right. It was never a matter of Leon versus Vazquez for me, but a matter of Leon versus Swihart. No contest, and I say that as a Swihart supporter.
  4. Chavis has been holding his own at 2B so far. Good for him.
  5. Sadly, it seems as though most people like stats, as long as they don't contradict one's opinion. If the stats do contradict one's opinion, then they are flawed or useless. I'm wondering if it's possible that perhaps the stats could be right?
  6. Sometimes a player makes a play look really tough, thereby giving the impression that he made a great play when he really didn't, when another player can make the same play look routine.
  7. Bingo. Pedroia returning, if he does, is not going to knock Chavis off the 25 man roster.
  8. And apparently, the comment was entirely misinterpreted.
  9. Amen, brother Notin. Personally, I'm pulling for him.
  10. Leon will likely be on paternity leave for about 3 days. If we lose the series against the Astros, I don't think there can be any other explanation than Leon's absence. #Leongate And congrats to him!
  11. This is how the Sox and the Astros match up since the Sox finally decided to start playing. Red Sox Notes‏ @SoxNotes 10m10 minutes ago The Sox and Astros begin a series tonight. MLB rankings since 4/29: Win % – BOS 1st (.800, 12-3), HOU 2nd (.750, 12-4) Run Diff – BOS 1st (+63), HOU 2nd (+59) Runs/Game – BOS 1st (7.3), HOU 2nd (7.1) OBP – BOS 1st (.382), HOU 2nd (.364) HR/Game – HOU 1st (2.4), BOS T-2nd (1.9) It should be a great series.
  12. Here's where I'm getting at. As recently as when the Sox were getting ready to sign Adrian Gonzalez, I was a firm believer in line up protection. I remember making posts (on another site) about how much better Gonzalez could be in the Sox line up with all the protection he'd have around him, as opposed to the weak San Diego line up he was coming from. Then I read about how line up protection was largely a myth, with the statistical analysis to back up that claim. I changed my opinion on something I firmly believed in. Once upon a time, I also firmly believed in clutch, momentum, speedy base runner on first hurting the defense, etc. etc. etc. I have changed my opinion on all of those things based on analytics.
  13. As do all stat geeks.
  14. Was that a case where you believed something, and stats told a different story?
  15. Sincere question for anybody who wants to answer it. When was the last time you let stats change your opinion about a player or about your view of some aspect of baseball, like batting order or line up protection? Or do we only think stats are useful if they support our opinion?
  16. Here's the point about batting order that I have said over and over, but people seem to keep overlooking. It just doesn't make that much of a difference. It doesn't make enough of a difference to worry about little tweaks, like whether a guy bats 1st or 2nd, or whether a guy bats 3rd or 4th. It is more advantageous to put guys in a spot where they feel comfortable. Here is a great example of where analytics people favor the human element. Is that what Cora is doing? I don't know. But Cora, being the analytics guy that he is, knows enough to know that.
  17. Good for him. I'm pulling for the guy.
  18. Bell has become a full-fledged stat geek. Woot!
  19. Apparently, that distinction now belongs to Sandy Leon.
  20. The lack of hair has messed with his mojo, which affects everything.
  21. I think there is an added pressure or expectation to batting leadoff that would give some players a fit if they found themselves batting first.
  22. Well that's because managers have traditionally been putting the wrong guys in the #2 hole. The trend is changing. You will soon be able to recall great #2 hitters, just as you can recall great clean up hitters.
  23. Cora is calling the in game shots, I can almost guarantee that. And he is a big fan of analytics. That's why he is the man.
  24. Please do. She needs to come back!
  25. It's the hair, or lack thereof. He needs to grow the hair back.
