Bingo. Cora arguably had the best Red Sox season in history, but one season does not make anyone the greatest manager ever. That said, I am against firing Cora.

Solid post sk. The idea of the role of the starting pitcher as we know it becoming almost obsolete just doesn't sit well with me. I, too, loved seeing guys like Pedro dominate the opposition for 7+ innings. I particularly agree with your comments on pace of play.

I want Henry to find someone who has a long term vision as well as a short term one. IMO, that was Theo and then Ben. Dombrowski, not so much.

It really depends on what Henry is planning to do in terms of resetting. Do I see Henry blowing up the team and having a big fire sale? No, even if that means not resetting the tax penalty. That means we still have our strong core of players and a few shrewd, yet inexpensive moves by the new GM will keep us competitive. But only because of the talent already on the team. Either way, reset or not, there won't be any new top tier replacements coming to the team any time soon.

The cliff is looming as large as ever. We are very much constrained both financially and in terms of prospects for a few years. If Henry decides to reset the luxury tax, things will be rough.

Valid point about the lateral move. It's not happening, but Theo would most definitely be my pick.

Thank you for this post Bell. I agree completely. The Eovaldi deal, at the time it was given, was really not a bad deal. Now it might turn out to be terrible, but hindsight aside, it wasn't a bad deal. And we're only one year into the deal. It might end up being a very good deal.

That is still crazy talk Notin, even in hindsight. I thought the Eovaldi deal was a year too long, but was otherwise perfectly on board with it. The Porcello deal I'd do again any day of the week.

One year of Betts won't bring back what we'd like, but it will bring back much more than the draft pick we'd get if he walked as a free agent.

Trading him, then re-signing him as a free agent is a great plan, if it can be done. I am not handing him a blank check though.

If he's looking for a 10 year deal, the decision is an easy one, IMO.

From the get go, I have been against signing Mookie to a long term deal like you mentioned. If the Sox don't think that they can extend him before he hits free agency, then it makes all the sense in the world to trade him. I felt that way last year too, when we were all feeling really good about the team and didn't foresee this collapse. It just makes too much sense not to. I know this won't go over too well, but frankly, I'm tired of Mookie's attitude about getting the most money in free agency. I know that baseball is a business, and he deserves it, and bla, bla, bla, but give me a Xander Bogaerts attitude any day of the week over a Mookie attitude.

I don't see the firing of Dombrowski as a sign that Henry is going to blow the team up, or anything close to that. Despite the way they have looked for much of this season, the team has a lot of talent and should be able to compete next year with some pitching help. I don't expect any big surprises in terms of getting rid of the starting players. I guess you could call trading JBJ a big surprise, but most would not. It is possible to win now while having a vision for the long term. Henry just needs to find the right guy to do it.

A full blown rebuild is not happening in Boston. They will go halfway, as you call it, but that doesn't mean that both tasks of staying competitive and retooling the farm can't be accomplished.

Just a few months ago, almost no one thought it was a good idea to trade Mookie. There were all kinds of comments about giving him a blank check and doing whatever it takes to make sure he stays in Boston. Have things changed that drastically between now and then?

My opinion is that Theo left because of Lucchino, who wouldn't allow Theo the freedom to do things the way Theo wanted to do them. He probably would not want to come back, but if promised the autonomy that Dombrowski had, maybe he would.

I love this post. Not because it's about a woman GM, but because you talk about getting the most bang for your buck. That has always been my motto when it comes to signing free agents.

Thank you. The team is actually quite good, and could easily contend next year with good health and a few additions. Also, it is possible to rebuild the farm while staying in contention. It just won't be done overnight. There is crazy talk talking place on this forum right now.
