  1. It is possible to contend while building. 2013 is Exhibit A, and it was not mostly by sheer luck.
  2. Please. Pay attention.
  3. I agree that if we were in the playoffs, the firing would not have happened.
  4. Or that he panics.
  5. I'm not sure if letting Dombrowski go now is a mistake, but otherwise I completely agree with your first two paragraphs. Well said. Even with this firing, I'm not sure of what Henry's intentions are. The farm needs to be rebuilt, for sure, but I can't see Henry tearing everything down and putting a non-competitive team on the field.
  6. Getting rid of Cora would be a mistake, IMO.
  7. I am very surprised that it happened this fast. I have always thought of Henry as someone who 'panics'. This move just strengthens my opinion.
  8. Good to hear Bell.
  9. I get it. The chances are very slim. That said, until there is no chance, there is hope.
  10. I don't want JD to opt out, but I really think his playing time in the field should be limited to playing in NL parks or in the case of injury to one of our starting outfielders.
  11. Now there is an intriguing idea!
  12. I'm a JBJ fan. I would not opposed to bringing him back on a team friendly contract, similar to what you've suggested. The question is what Henry's intentions are as far as resetting the luxury tax over the next year or two.
  13. On a side note, I haven't seen Bell around today. I hope he and anyone else in that area made it through Dorian okay.
  14. We're all die hard fans here who just take different approaches to viewing the season. I can't blame anyone who has given up on the season. I just can't do it, and as the manager, I would hope that Cora wouldn't do it either until the math says he has to. Play every game like game like you're in a playoff hunt. The time for auditioning the kids will come.
  15. IMO, this diminishes the role of the starting pitcher, which is what I don't like. Eventually, what is going to distinguish a starting pitcher over a reliever? We'll just have pitchers. I do see the advantages to it, but I don't like it.
  16. Oh geez...
  17. Fair point. The Red Sox' approach was more of a bullpen game than an opener game. Either way, whether the 'starter' is the second guy in or the opener is followed by a slew of relievers, the trend seems to be catching on. I get the rationale behind it. I don't like it.
  18. Interesting stat of the day: Kevin Youkilis had 292 3-0 counts in his career. He did not swing once in such counts.
  19. I'd rather see JBJ out there everyday than Gorkys Hernandez.
  20. It's not looking very good for the good guys, but the fat lady has not sung yet. Cora has not given up yet, which I'm glad to see. I think playing the minor leaguers at this point sends the wrong message. I am not delusional. I know our chances are not good at all. That said, never give up and never give up hope.
  21. It seems as though the idea of the opener is catching on and will be here for a while. It does have its advantages, one being that it doesn't give the opposition time to figure out the pitchers. To me, it doesn't seem like it would be something that would be sustainable throughout the season, due to the overuse of the pen, but the Rays have done it rather successfully for 2 years now. If it does continue to catch on, I wonder what that will do to the state of the starting pitchers, particularly in terms of contracts. FTR, I do not like the idea.
  22. If you look beyond save percentage, our pen has been pretty good all season. They have been very good recently. They have had to carry a workload much greater than expected, and if our starters had done their jobs, our save percentage would look a lot better. I'm sure of that. While the pen does carry its share of the blame, they are not the reason that the team is where it is in the standings.
  23. Offense produced. Good win for the good guys.
  24. IMO, that's the formula that should be used year in and year out. Farm system, farm system, farm system.
  25. I very much like this post.
