  1. I've always liked and supported Cora. I'm not sure that he deserved to be fired, but as you said, something needed to be done. The team is underperforming at a level that is unprecedented. I wish Cora well. He will have no problems getting another job. Fatse and the other hitting coaches definitely needed to go, IMO. Their approach/philosophy was not working at all.
  2. I'm not usually one who pushes for firing coaches/managers when a team is struggling, but when a team is performing as poorly as the Red Sox currently are, I think it's fair to call into question the coaching and managing. There is something inherently wrong with our hitting philosophy. It's not poor roster construction. We don't need to hit homeruns, necessarily, but we do need to be able to make contact and put the ball in play. I am also finding myself questioning Cora's effectiveness in the clubhouse, which, if you know me, you know goes against my typical support and love of Cora. This team has me in a funk that I don't like being in.
  3. We aren't as bad as we are making ourselves look. We will start playing better baseball at some point, hopefully sooner than later. But I have zero confidence in this team to be able to win a game right now. Forget about coming back from a 3-run deficit. On a bright note, our batters only struck out 4 times last night. That's progress.
  4. As Red Sox fans, we are suffering. BUT, it could be worse. We should remember these records and revisit them at the end of the season. By 'we', I mean you, Notin. LOL I won't remember.
  5. I'm not a believer of setting one's line up based on recent production or lack thereof, but I do think it's time to give Anthony a rest from hitting lead off. Nothing to do with the line up, but I am really liking what I've seen from Contreras at first base.
  6. Not really. LOL That said, unlike most here, I've never had an issue with Bloom. I just don't like the Cardinals. I just noticed that the Brewers are in last place in that division with a .571 winning percentage. Yikes. It'll be interesting to see how that division plays out over the season.
  7. It was still a very frustrating game to watch for so many reasons. That said, I'll gladly take the Win.
  8. Also in the meantime, I'll take enjoyment in following Francona's Reds, with their NL Central leading 14-8 record and -8 run differential. LOL
  9. Absolutely. Of course, we don't know how much truth there is to this, and if there is truth to it, how many players are "a lot" that are being late. At any rate, shame on any player who is showing up late with no good reason, and shame on Cora if he is letting any player get away with it.
  10. It is astounding how poorly the Red Sox are performing, with the exception of a few players. They have not been much fun to watch, even when they win. In fact, it's been downright agonizing. I still expect them to make the playoffs, but in the meantime, it's been pure frustration. I didn't sign up for this. :(
  11. Well, if there's any truth to the rumor that a lot of the team has been showing up late, that speaks very poorly about the team's professionalism and their attitude towards righting the ship. There's no excuse for not showing up every day, no matter how bad things get. Cora should bench every one of them.
  12. Forgive me if this has already been addressed, but I don't get to read a lot of what is posted here. Is there something going on between Crochet and Narvaez? Why was Narvaez suddenly scratched before Crochet's 2nd start?
  13. I completely understand why one wouldn't challenge a call early in the game with no one on and 2 outs. That said, how do we know that a different call at that moment doesn't change the whole dynamic of that inning and perhaps even the game? All I'm saying is that plays early in the game can and do impact the outcome of the game just as much as plays in the 9th inning. The ones in the 9th inning are just more noticeable.
  14. The Dodgers are, indeed, ruining baseball.
  15. This is why I like you, JoeB.
  16. I was not and am still not in favor of using the ABS system. That said, I have to admit that I'm not hating it. It is keeping me entertained and engaged for multiple reasons. It has to be frustrating, though, for a player who really would like to challenge a call early in the game not to be able to do so because of the risk of not having that challenge for later in the game. My beef with that is that a missed ball/strike call with no one on in the 2nd inning can impact the outcome of the game just as much as a missed ball/strike call with bases loaded in the 9th inning.
  17. I really don't have the energy to continually defend my beloved team against the naysayers, but suffice it to say, that I am fully confident that the Red Sox will be playing playoff baseball come October, despite the 1-5 start and the current .400 winning percentage. Dare I say that the Red Sox might still even win the division. This will be my opinion until otherwise stated.
  18. I am hoping that we can salvage a 3-3 opening road trip by taking the last 2 games in Houston. It's been a frustrating start to the season, losing 2 close games in Cincinnati, then watching our offense look so futile last night. The good news is, it's obviously such a small sample, and our team is better than this 1-3 record.
  19. Yes. I'm a big fan of Pythagoras.
  20. An error as egregious as batting a weak hitting pitcher in the clean-up spot all season would result in a difference of about 16 runs over the course of the season or roughly 1.5 wins. Most moves that are discussed here, like whether Anthony should bat 1st or 3rd would result in a difference of about 2 runs over a full season, so they are relatively meaningless. Who was the manager that talked about pulling his lineup out of a hat everyday? He would probably have about the same success as he would have if he constructed his lineup based on conventional wisdom. I think you're right that it's more important to break up the lefties, and also more important to factor in a player's comfort level based on his hitting approach. All that said, an optimal line up could result in between 5 and 15 extra runs over the season, maybe 1 or 2 wins, so in that sense, maybe not so meaningless. Sadly, managers typically don't go with the optimal lineup.
  21. It will be interesting to see how the umpires fare in these challenges. I haven't watched a lot of spring training games, but in the challenges I've seen, the incorrect calls were all borderline or at least close. I have not seen any blatantly missed calls, which is good. Many teams are advising their pitchers not to challenge, but to leave it up to their catchers, which is a wise move. I trust the catchers' judgment a lot more than the pitchers' judgment.
  22. I'm still concerned about the strikeouts, or more specifically, the inability to at least make a productive out. That said, I think our offense will be fine.
  23. We may not have a top 5 offense in terms of runs scored, but if our pitching holds up like we think it should, we should be one of the top teams in run differential. That's what matters. The top 8 teams in run differential last year, and 10 of the top 11 (Texas was extremely unlucky) all made the playoffs. FTR, I'm not picking Boston to win the division, though I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. I am predicting them to make the playoffs.
