  1. The Red Sox made a respectable offer to Alonso. In the end, it was not competitive to what the Orioles offered because of the number of guaranteed years, but it wasn't a lowball offer. I am happy with what the team did this offseason. I think we not only have a shot at a ring, I think we have a good shot at a ring.
  2. No doubt the interpreter was part of it. And you're right that he will probably be well taken care of. Ohtani was involved in a real estate thing too. Not a good look.
  3. There have been a LOT of pitch clock violations during these games, both on the pitching side and the batting side. With so many international players having never used a pitch clock, perhaps it shouldn't have been used in this tournament? It was cool to see Manny Ramirez in the house, taking in his son's play. And seeing Lucas hit 2 homeruns (albeit against team USA.) As someone else posted, it's nice to see a lot of youngsters playing. Imagine being a 17 year old high schooler pitching against the likes of Aaron Judge. Panama vs Puerto Rico was a really good game. So many of the others have been lopsided.
  4. My beef with Shohei is that, IMO, he got away with illegal baseball gambling, while at the same time throwing his interpreter under the bus. MLB swept this under the rug. I know why MLB swept it under the rug, but that doesn't make it okay.
  5. I honestly do not have any problems with the Red Sox not wanting to pay market value for top end talent. Market value is not on-field value. In other words, market value is an overpay, often a gross overpay. Hence, the importance of locking up players before they reach free agency.
  6. According to reports, the Red Sox gave Mookie a respectable offer. He countered with something ridiculous and unreasonable. IMO, Red Sox are not at fault on those negotiations. OTOH, the Red Sox butchered the Jon Lester negotiations. I still haven't forgiven Cherington for that one, and I'm a Cherington fan, unlike so many others here.
  7. Like you said, the Red Sox tried to sign him and it didn't work out. Knowing it wasn't going to work, you have to trade him, IMO.
  8. One of the added perks of Talksox. You learn all kinds of things here.
  9. Thank you for defending Yoshida. I really don't want to see him playing left field, but I'm not nearly as eager to trade him as most people are.
  10. I've been enjoying the play so far. That said, Shohei is really starting to get on my nerves.
  11. Wow. Shame on you for this post, and shame on jad for liking it.
  12. Thanks for posting this. I'm looking forward to watching as much of the WBC as I can. I think it's a really exciting tournament for the players to participate in. I just hope all players get through it injury free. I was particularly interested in the eligibility rules, as I've often wondered how certain players can play for certain teams. It seems the eligibility rules are rather broad, indeed.
  13. Who decided that February would only have 28 days anyway? It must have been Punksutawney Phil.
  14. I love watching great defensive plays, even when they're made against us. Yes, it's frustrating, but you have to tip your cap. I'm thoroughly impressed by what MLB players can do on the field. I'm getting ready to watch the Yankees/Red Sox game that I recorded. Exciting times for me!
  15. There was good reason to dump Betts. His reported contract demands to the Red Sox were unreasonable, and those were made at a time before he was even a free agent, a time when he should have been willing to take a bit of a discount, if anything. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango.
  16. As I previously stated, no one was going to match the production of Betts. But at the time of the deal, it was a decent deal when you factor in the amount of money it cost to sign Betts. It's a shame that neither Verdugo nor Downs panned out.
  17. I heard this the other day and thought 'that can't be good.' Apparently, though, the issue he's having doesn't affect his swing at all. I don't know how that works.
  18. I was good with trading Betts. I was also okay with the return that we got for him. No one was going to match Betts' production, but nor was it going to cost us $300M plus. Betts was going for the most money. It was time to part ways. With all of the trades made, the impacts are carried over for years, directly or indirectly. Had we not traded Betts, the players that we have acquired or not acquired would be a lot different. For all we know, we might not have Crochet today if we had kept Betts.
  19. I am a Wong fan. I think he would do a lot better if he were playing mostly everyday. Hopefully, he'll do well enough to take a little more playing time from Narvaez this year to help keep Narvaez from getting run down.
  20. OK, I have not been able to watch a spring training game yet. My Extra Innings package, hence my MLB.tv, doesn't kick in until regular season. ☹️ I'm looking forward to Yankees and Red Sox on ESPN on Wednesday.
  21. It's been a loooong week. That said, I can't believe it's already March, and even more unbelievable is that we spring forward on Saturday! Temps in the 70s later this week!
  22. Being the biased fan that I am, it doesn't bother me nearly as much when a Red Sox player does it. If I see a Yankee player showboating after hitting a home run off of a Red Sox pitcher, that's a whole other story. I might even throw a few choice words at the screen. LOL I agree that it's more "acceptable" to admire a long home run or a game-winning walk off home run, but I'd rather not see it at all.
