  1. That makes a lot of sense. I don't want to see a lot of moving parts either. I really would like to see the Red Sox commit to Mayer as a full time player as opposed to a platoon player.
  2. No, I don't think I would do that. I still prefer the stronger pitching over the stronger offense.
  3. I am okay without the addition of a big bat. But I fully admit that the first time we lose a well-pitched game because we couldn't score any runs, I will be (silently) cursing somebody or something.
  4. Sea Beach Fred?
  5. That could be, though Story willingly (I think) played 2nd base to accommodate Bogaert back in the day.
  6. I was thinking A-, which of course rounds up to an A. Starting pitching is always my priority. The Red Sox addressed that very well. We could perhaps have upgraded the offense a little more, but at what cost? The types of moves that Breslow made are the types of moves that are right up my alley.
  7. I'm guessing it all depends on where the Red Sox are in the standings. If we're in it, then they should be willing to go over (or stay over) the 2nd line if needed. If we're not in it, then shed unneeded payroll to get under.
  8. I am never sure who to trust on payroll numbers. If they are over the 2nd CBT, that's even more to the point that the Red Sox are spending plenty.
  9. I'm with you on this Drewski. I like hearing this.
  10. I think most are in agreement that Story at 2B would be a better alignment defensively. I'm not sure why Cora isn't considering it. I don't think Story would be opposed. My prediction is for 91 wins and 2nd place in the division behind the dreaded team that shall not be named.
  11. The Red Sox payroll is roughly $250M, and barring them shedding some salary later, they will be over the luxury tax limit for the 2nd consecutive year. They are hardly the As, Pirates, or Rockies.

    Olympics

I guess no one else is really watching the Olympics. LOL Such great moments highlighting "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." Who's with me on figure skating? Curling? Anyone?
  13. Woot! Let's go! Let's get through March Madness, and it will be time for the boys of summer.
  14. I get hugely attached to our players, and I hate to lose them in free agency. That said, IMO, that's the way to go. Enjoy them when they are young and somewhat affordable, but you have to let them walk if their free agent contract is going to be outrageous, which is typically the case. Hopefully, by the time our young stars are ready to walk, the next group of young stars is ready to take their spots. In a perfect world, there'd be a never-ending revolving door of players like Betts and Anthony. Also, I'm all about the better value player over the better player, mainly because I'm so opposed to those large contracts.
  15. "Crochet looks ready, although Duran ripped a gapper off him today" Don't know whether we should be glad that Duran was able to rip a gapper off of Crochet or upset that Crochet gave up the gapper. LOL It's nice to hear that Casas is moving around the field pretty well. I still have high hopes for him.
  16. Exactly. Since the beginning of time, teams have been trying to figure out how to build their rosters to win in the postseason. In short, the best indicator of how well a team will do in the postseason is regular season run differential (and even that correlation isn't particularly strong.) In other words, score more runs than your opponents.
  17. No worries. My posts are almost always optimistic leaning. It's hard work, but someone has to do it. LOL I think 2nd is more realistic than 4th, and I think that 2nd and 3rd are equally close in likelihood. I won't go as far as saying that 1st is more likely than 4th, but I will say that 1st is more likely than last. And I definitely have Red Sox October baseball penciled in on my calendar.
  18. Home runs do provide instant scoring, I can't argue with that. I also do not argue with the fact that there is value in home runs. I just disagree with the idea that you need to be able to hit a lot of homeruns to win in the postseason.
  19. That's a fair opinion. I disagree with it, but it's fair.
  20. I give the competition plenty of credit. I didn't say that 1st was as likely as 4th, just that it's possible that we finish 1st. I agree that it's also possible we finish last. If I'm predicting right now, I'd say we finish in 2nd or 3rd place in the division. I just take exception to the statement that the Sox are a 4th place team, at best.
  21. The randomness of baseball, particularly in the short series that the postseason is comprised of, is something that has always piqued my interest. Of course, a well-timed homerun can win a game. But so can a strike out, a great defensive play, or even a bad bounce. It's simply just not true that homeruns are what wins in the postseason, generally speaking.
  22. There is almost 0 correlation between hitting homeruns and winning in the postseason. The correlation is positive, but it's so weak that it's basically nonexistent. I will say it until I'm blue in the face, the playoffs are very largely a crapshoot.
  23. Plus, homeruns do have a big impact on the game, which I think gives a sense of having more importance than they really have. I'm not saying that homeruns aren't nice or aren't important, but they are not the reason why teams win in the postseason, statistically speaking.
  24. I also agree that we have a complete team. The offense is maybe not as strong as we'd like, but it should be fine combined with our strong pitching. I feel a lot better about our infield after the recent additions, all within days of each other. We have some good depth and versatility all around.
  25. Despite some of the players looking like they're not in the best physical shape, baseball players are incredible athletes. I am regularly impressed by the plays they pull off.
