  1. I have no issues with Wong as our backup catcher. In fact, I'm a Wong fan. However, given the options status of Wong and Thaiss, it makes sense to keep as much depth as possible and to give Thaiss a shot, at least to start the season.
  2. I am not in favor of the ABS challenge system, but if there ever was a case for why it is needed, the 3rd called strike on a 3-2 count last night is it. That said, a tip of the cap to Pujols and the Dominican team for their very positive attitudes shortly after the game.
  3. I want USA to win it, but now that Japan and the Dominican Republic are out, I am okay with whoever wins it. I have nothing against the Japan and DR teams, but they've already won it, so let's spread the wealth around. The atmosphere in these games has been electric.
  4. I hadn't thought about the mercy rule and how that factors into the "lowest quotient". You're absolutely right. I just thought that runs allowed was an interesting choice. Run differential would have made more sense, IMO.
  5. IMO, very good extensions. Both of them.
  6. There's still a long way to go on that contract. I'm glad the Sox locked him up. There's always a risk, but IMO, the potential reward is greater.
  7. 1. I hope that Kyle Teel's injury is not serious. 2. One of the bright spots of last night's game for me was Weissert. At least we have that.
  8. I am wondering how they decided on runs allowed being the second tie breaker.
  9. They also have Logan Webb. He pitched well against Brazil. The pitch limits are so strict, though, that I don't know if he would have been able to make the start last night. I am surprised that DeRosa was not aware that the USA had not clinched. I'm not sure that it would have made any difference, but that's inexcusable.
  10. I can't really disagree with any of this. I think the Sox offense will be better than some people think. You make some good points about the Yankees offense, but somehow, I think they'll find a way to score a lot of runs. They might not lead the league, but they'll still be very good.
  11. It took me a while on both yours and 5GoldGloves post. But at least I got it this time. I usually don't get the references made here. LOL
  12. I just want him to do well. He started off so good that we posted comments about how he looked like he belonged and how he didn't seem to get bothered by whatever the situation. And then, it quickly turned south. Also, 16 more days!
  13. Good point. Thanks for pulling me back into reaility.
  14. Maybe it wasn't competitive, but it was a solid offer. One can't do anything about how high another team is willing to go with its offers, and IMO, it typically isn't wise to try to match or beat an offer that is too much. Our offense isn't going to be the Yankees offense, but with our pitching staff, we should score enough runs to compete.
  15. I am excited about Contreras, though he is on the wrong side of the aging curve. We'll see how it goes. 100% on Baltimore's offer to Alonso being too much.
  16. It's quite obvious that the Red Sox made the right moves. Who can argue with OPS's like that.
  17. This makes me sad. I'm pulling hard for this guy.
  18. I don't disagree that Betts will likely be worth his entire contract by the time it's all said and done. That still doesn't change the fact that the last years of the contract could be a huge albatross. He might end up being good for all 12 years. Who knows? I'm just not a fan of these big contracts, and it's not a risk I'm willing to take (despite the fact that it's not my money. LOL)
  19. Not to mention what should be a big improvement at 1B over last year.
  20. That should be the mindset of every player on any team in any sport. I'll do whatever you need me to do to help the team.
  21. The problem is typically not in the first half of the contract. That type of contract can financially handcuff a team during the latter half, unless you're the Dodgers and are willing to spend like drunken sailors.
  22. It's what we do here. Mookie appreciates it.
  23. Lester really wanted to stay. Betts did not. JMO, of course. Still one of my all time favorite Red Sox moments is the hug between Lester and Francona after Lester threw his no hitter.
  24. Yes, and I still shake my head in disbelief that they offered him what they did during the uncertain times of the pandemic. I think they could have gotten him for less. Mookie bet on himself and it paid off. Good for him. However, that doesn't make the Red Sox wrong in trading him.
  25. Lester was willing to take a home team discount. The Red Sox should have been all over that. From what I've read, Mookie countered with 12 years and $420M. Sorry, but if you're looking to get extended before reaching free agency, you have to be willing to leave some money on the table. To me, it was clear that Mookie was unwilling to do that.
