I do not disagree with that. That's the bottom line, for sure. I disagree with what I am interpreting as your attempt to simplify it to that point, with no consideration to the many other factors that have to be taken into consideration.

It's not necessarily dirtdogs, though they could certainly be included. When I think 'unsung hero', I'm thinking of the players that don't receive the attention and the stardom of someone like Mookie. Whether right or wrong, the notion of unsung hero is closely tied in to salary. Mitch Moreland comes to mind. Everyone who has any interest in baseball knows who Mookie is. How many casual fans know who Moreland is? Even those who may know who Moreland is probably don't pay him much attention. He just quietly goes about his business without all the fanfare. There is no question that the Sox are not as good as team without Mookie as they are with him. But the ensuing moves have not been made yet. If you're going to compare Mookie against Verdugo, Mookie is clearly the winner. If you're going to compare Mookie against Verdugo and Players 1, 2, 3 that will be acquired or kept with the money saved from not paying Mookie, I think the latter would likely become the winner.

But there has to be consideration given to how Dombrowski got there. I do not, by any means, think that I am nearly as capable as Dombrowski is in being a GM. However, I do think that I, or any of us here, could have gotten the team to 3 division winners in a row, given the same situation that Dombrowski came into. That's how good the foundation was. I won't go so far as to say that I could have had a team as good as the 2018 team. I give Dombrowski props for the final moves made to create that season.

Well, I honestly don't know the worth of small market teams, but I'm guessing that all owners could afford to to pay a player $30 million a year. That might not leave a lot of payroll room for the rest of the team, but they could afford it. If I'm wrong about that, then I'll edit my statement to say many teams could afford it. Regardless, I still think you're oversimplifying the matter.

I was on board with the deal. I was and am happy with the return. I know that some would have preferred Graterol, but for me, if Graterol only projects to be a reliever and not a starter, than Downs is the better value. Yes, we could have asked for another pitcher from the Dodgers. I'm guessing that Bloom did that and felt that Downs was the overall better get. It's odd that I was against signing Price for his contract amount, yet I was also against trading him as part of the Mookie trade. In hindsight, the trade worked out very well, but at the time, I was looking to compete and we needed the starting pitcher.

I don't see Bloom making any big deals this offseason. There is still too much uncertainty heading into next season, both with the virus situation and with the state of our returning roster, mainly pitching. He will sign stop gap type players to keep us competitive, but no big free agent signings yet. It's possible that he would make a big trade for a young starter, but do we have the pieces that other teams would want, without putting ourselves back 2 steps in other areas?

We need depth. As long as we have solid depth players who are ready to step in should one of the starters not work out, then we will be fine. Getting to the playoffs is often not about who your starters are, but who can fill in for the starters in case of injury or underperformance. Easier said than done.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. Devers could very well end up being a better hitter, possibly even a better player overall, than Mookie. He's still very young. He seems to me to be the type of player that responds very well to a close mentor/friend. Hopefully he will have that leadership and guidance going forward to continue pushing him to become better and better.

Absolutely, the health of our top 3 starters is the key. In the pen, Weber and Brewer should definitely be in the mix. Some of those other guys will be too. There's just too small a sample on them this season to make that judgment. Josh Taylor comes to mind. I completely agree that we need pitching help. If our current pitchers return healthy, then I don't think things are as bad as they currently look.

If Chavis, Chatham, or Lin can provide more production, than I'm all for it. Munoz would work very well in a utility role if that's the case. Christian Arroyo has now worked his name into the mix for 2B. Apparently, his is "Bloom guy". I have no idea what the offseason plans are for the Beni and JBJ. As I said, I'd like to see them both return in their starting roles.

Not baseball names, but last year I had the following students: Amiyah - Pronounced with a long i (A-my-a) Amiyah - Pronounced with a long e (A-me-a) Miya - Pronounced with a long i (My-a) Miya - Pronounced with a long e (Me-a) Nia - Pronounced with a long i (Nigh-a) Mia - Pronounced with a long e (Me-a) And just for good measure, I also had 2 Jeremiahs. LOL I am really good with being able to learn my students names, but remembering those pronunciations took me a while.
