  1. I have no problem with that, as long at the Red Sox win.
  2. In terms of overall philosophy, yes. I think the concern was over payroll, and with Henry suddenly becoming a cheapskate. I think we will have the best of both worlds.
  3. 100%. Henry will still spend, no doubt about that. But we will also have a farm system.
  4. I think by 'great players' he meant the big name superstars. You can have great players without having all the fanfare and expensive contract to go along with it. I hate losing our players to free agency or through trade as much as anyone else does. If I were GM, I'd probably continue to re-sign them for their entire careers, based on sentimentality alone. That said, it's about the team, not about the individual player. Sometimes, the choices are tough. I remember people used to joke about Theo having ice water in his veins because he wouldn't re-sign his free agents for what they were asking. It turns out that he was absolutely right in most of his decisions.
  5. How are those our only options? If you're talking about this year alone, that's a very shortsighted view. How about winning a championship with expensive great players versus winning a championship with great home grown players? I choose the latter. How about not winning a championship with one superstar who doesn't have a supporting cast versus winning a championship with a cast of great home grown and inexpensive free agents. I again choose the latter.
  6. Mookie did not take the Sox to the playoffs by himself. And as I just posted, you do not build a team based off of who will generate ticket sales.
  7. Yes, baseball is most certainly part of the entertainment industry. However, you do not build teams based on who will put fans in the seats. You build teams based on getting the most wins for the team, on the whole, for the short and long terms. That was always the big point of contention between Theo and Lucchino. Henry spends plenty on this team. He does not need to sign a superstar for entertainment purposes. If the team is winning, the fans will be entertained, superstar or not. I think there are lot of fans who root more for the unsung hero types over the superstars. I know I do. Don't get me wrong. I will root for players like Mookie on my team too, but I think it is a huge mistake to give any player that type of contract.
  8. Even though I was against that contract, I can agree that the Price deal was fine. We needed the pitching. I do not agree that the Sale and Eovaldi contracts are the bigger concern. Perhaps in hindsight, but they were good deals when they occurred, though a year too long in both cases.
  9. The unfortunate circumstances of this year have fortunately made that entire deal look better, not that I thought it was bad to begin with.
  10. JD's expected stats versus his actual stats give us some reason to be optimistic. His numbers should not be as bad as they are. BA: .211, xBA: .234 SLG: .375, xSLG: .472 OBA: .287, xOBA: .333 Those expected numbers are still not up to par with JD's typical season numbers, but better than his actual performance numbers.
  11. Any team could afford Mookie. I know you understand the point, but you're overlooking or underplaying the point significantly by making that statement.
  12. I do not disagree with this. I appreciate Henry's willingness to spend. What I don't like is the sense of entitlement from the fans when it comes to Henry's money.
  13. I love Devers. He is a great player. However, he should not be put in the same class as Mookie. Maybe he will get there because he is still very young, but he's not at Mookie's level.
  14. Fangraphs is my #1 go to. Baseball reference has improved rather nicely over the years, but it's still no Fangraphs.
  15. I am thinking Munoz as well. I am also thinking (hoping) JBJ is re-signed on a team friendly deal and Beni will find his way again next year, which takes care of the starting OF.
  16. We don't have to build a full rotation or a full pen from scratch. Also, we reset. That helps a great deal. Another also, the Sox were willing to let Mookie walk. If our other stars are deemed too expensive, they will walk as well.
  17. There may be some internal options, or we might have to make some smaller type moves for position players. Nothing major though. The overwhelming majority of the focus should be on pitching.
  18. Looking forward to seeing Eovaldi back on the mound tonight.
  19. I absolutely understand loving a player without being a fan of the team. I think most people have player favorites on other teams. What I don't understand is rooting for said player or players to win when playing against your favorite team.
  20. Ugly game. Sad game. One bright spot this season (there have been a couple of others) is Verdugo. He has impressed more than I was expecting him to.
  21. I agree. They will make it to the playoffs. They have the randomness of the playoffs in their favor once they get there. I will be pulling for any team not named the Yankees.
  22. The Yankees, unfortunately, will make the playoffs. Not because they're as good as Jacko thinks they are, but because their competition is simply not that good. The Os are pretenders. The Jays are fortunate to be where they are in the standings. They don't have the pitching. But beyond those two teams, I don't think the Yankees are better than any of the other AL contenders. Perhaps the Astros.
  23. What really helped the Yankees was that they went 7-0 against the Sox. It's like we've become the Minnesota Twins.
  24. I think baseball will rebound also when things return to 'normal'. I don't see that the sport of baseball is in grave danger like some people think. Hopefully, it will be by the start of next season.
