Depends on what you consider overspending. I think it's possible that Jackie is re-signed, but not for anything close to his current $11 million salary.

I have always felt that if a team looks good on paper entering the season, then the GM has done his job. The Sox, on paper, should have been a top contending team in 2019, which is why I don't blame Dombrowski for the results of that year. As far as the cliff goes, we are on the same page. Fortunately, I am confident that Bloom can have us back in contention in 2021 with the right moves and that the cliff will be short lived.

Ottavino's ERA last year was far better than his peripherals. He was due for some significant regression.

As I've posted before, I could not be a GM. I'd have a hard time getting rid of anybody due to sentimentality. LOL I really don't like seeing our players leave through free agency, but I have come to realize that it's usually the best thing for the team. I, too, prefer to have a well balanced team rather than having one or two superstars that are supposed to carry the team.

It's not easy, but it's doable, especially when your owner is willing to spend, which Henry is. Look at the Dodgers.

The process works. It can't be completed in one year when the previous GM so completely undid the process.

Maybe he is overrated. We will find out soon enough. My trust in Bloom stems from the job he did with the Rays and the job that Friedman, his mentor, is doing with the Dodgers, along with the fact that I 100% agree with his team building philosophy. How much experience did Theo have coming into the job? Theo had the same team building philosophy. IMO, the correct way to build a team for sustained success. Perhaps it's that I have trust in that philosophy more so than in the person.

I consider anything over 4 years a long term contract. I'd offer 7, maybe 8 years to the very best players, like Mookie. I'd be willing to increase the AAV if that would help.

I don't think they did. They might have made Mookie a similar offer to the one that they already made to him, but with very little expectation that he would accept.

I didn't think he'd sign before he reached free agency. That was actually kind of a slap in the face. However, times have changed a lot since he was traded. I think Mookie was really concerned about what the market might look like, and concerned that he might not get offered $300 million. Mookie would have been stupid not to accept. I may not ever understand the Dodgers offering Mookie that much in these uncertain times.

At the time that we gave Pedroia his extension, I thought it was a good deal. But having yet another long term contract fizzle out has made me change my mind completely about even extending our own beloved players long term.

100%. I hate those monster contracts. I would seriously prefer to stick with the 1-4 year contracts for the second tier players rather than signing a Trout or a Betts, as good as they are. Sometimes, I think how nice would it be to be a small market team. LOL We don't have to be a small market team, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with making some small market types of moves. My question is, where does it end with the big contracts? 15 years? 17 years?

Sure we do. We don't have the same depth as the Yankees, but we have a 25 man roster that was good enough to compete if they had remained healthy and performed up to expectations.

I agree with all of this to a certain extent. I do think there has to be a balance between the short and long term goals, meaning it's not wise to completely wipe out your farm system. Also, we would probably disagree on the definition of 'significant' as far as the return is concerned.

I am calling BS on the second article. The Sox players showed JBJ just as much support as the Dodgers players showed Mookie. Look at pictures of Mookie kneeling during the national anthem. His teammates did not kneel with him.

^^^ It's not like the Sox were trying to pay him $5 million. Mookie was unwilling to budge from whatever his demands were.

There is no doubt that the scrutiny in Boston is unlike anywhere else. Mookie seems to have handled it well. As I posted previously, I think once he was in LA, he probably decided he preferred it over Boston, but I don't think he had that feeling beforehand.

I have agreed with you that the arbitration hearings might have soured Mookie a little, but not to the point where Mookie would not re-sign here if he were offered enough money. Also, all arbitration hearings are like that. It is the job of the Sox representative to convince the arbitration committee that Mookie should get the team's amount rather than the player's amount. I have read that most of those hearings are rather ugly. If Mookie truly understands that baseball is a business, then his decision should not have been affected by that. Do we have to have one superstar to root for as the Face of the Franchise? How about having a great team to root for instead?
