  1. All these signs are very encouraging, but I hope they mean a masher that can slot in the middle of the line up AS WELL AS a Bregman type. Otherwise we're just treading water.
  2. That World Series MVP must have just been for a laugh.
  3. And yet having an elite pitcher just won the Dodgers the WS.
  4. I'd be very much on board with that.
  5. You can never have enough good arms. Another lockdown arm in the pen is always a good thing. That said, I'm not overly high on Williams.
  6. Why would anyone take that contract on? The only chance is if we attach a high level prospect to it, and even then...
  7. I think they'll ask for one of them (rightly so) and we should do it. If everything goes brilliantly, Tolle or Early may become a Ryan. So go get THE Ryan now.
  8. Apart from securing his client a whopping contract before what is expected to be a bitter work stoppage. Swings and roundabouts and all that. Hard to see how everyone is seeing this impending work stoppage.
  9. That doesn't mean much to me when he can't field a position and his hit tool is still is very suspect. I'd prefer someone else figure it out and we use the money to get the players in we need.
  10. I'd do that deal all day, but yeah, I don't think anyone is taking on that cash. It's really hard to judge how teams would see Campbell right now. There's still the minor player of the year sheen there, but they will have the same scouting reports that we see...
  11. But we're not naive enough to think it doesn't go on right? Alex Speier said as much a few days ago on 310 to Left. They all pass info around.
  12. Of course he's losing money. he's bidding 700m for players like Soto and telling Boras, "let us know the price and add 50m on top". If he wants them you're not out bidding him. There's wealth, and then there's Cohen. Also, owners shouldn't be losing money, organisations should exist in their financial ecosystem. The problem is that too many owners are not getting anywhere near their ceiling. But the fact that Cohen doesn't care tells you all you need to know about bidding wars if they really want a player.
  13. They really can't. If the Mets decide they want him no matter the cost, we're not outbidding them. Should we spend more? Absolutely. Can we outbid the richest guy in the sport? No.
  14. Saying we can't trade for a 2 if we've traded Duran is not fostering conversation, it's acting obtuse for self gratification. Your specific question was what do I propose we do (instead of trading Duran). I've answered. You trade prospects. You know, the way everyone else does.
  15. Fair point, I did mention that in my opening post. I'd love Schwarber, but I just don't think we can carry Masa as well. If JH is wiling to eat it and Masa goes one way or another, happy days, get him in.
  16. I'm not sure what your argument is with? I'm not saying anything about the potential fa's just commenting on the likelihood of Masa getting DFA'd.
  17. Because we can't out bid the Mets in free agency and these things don't happen in a vacuum. If they say it's 400m now and we tell Boras we will go to it, the Mets could say okay we'll go $450m next year if you wait, but with the possibility of a long/potentially season ending work stoppage to come, it makes plenty of sense to say I'll take the guaranteed money right now, especially for the enormous figure it'll be. And if there is a year long stoppage of even half the season, who says he gets anywhere near that figure again. I'd rather we tie him up now and pay the prosect price rather than the alternative. Again though it all feels very unlikely, and I don't expect us to go there.
  18. Yes, but not the financial hit on the tax. Maybe they don't care (and hopefully they don't) but I'm skeptical of that. It helps it wasn't a Breslow signing.
  19. People talk. Boras will let the Sox know exactly what the number is (if there is one) before we traded for him. They can decide if they're comfortable with it or not. This idea that we would only be able to know what it would cost after a trade is for the birds.
  20. Both injuries bother me, but the knee injury was a big one, and came just from him running to first. I really hope he can get back healthy and stay that way. I have serious reservations and shouldn't be considered until he can prove otherwise.
  21. All the noise coming out of the meetings so far is that its strictly between Red Sox and Phillies for Schwarber. I'd love him, but it's such an awkward match for our roster.
  22. We're almost certainty not going to move for these sorts of pitchers. Unless something has gone wrong. Otherwise we would have extended the QO to Gio. Breslow has said its at the top he's aiming (and likely in a trade), and that the middle to bottom is set.
  23. No chance. Tucker kills our other moves. They just mean an upgrade in the overall roster I think.
  24. I think it was meant to be be an upgrade as in the roster would be upgraded overall, rather than a direct replacement for Duran, We can't afford one for starters.
