  1. I don't think it's because he sees himself as revolutionary for pocketing money, but because like all business people, wants success at the lowest possible price and is constantly looking at/for value. He also wants to outsmart everyone else and be seen to be the smartest person in the room is my guess. I think if he sees a possibility of winning he'll spend, if he thinks the organisation isn't in the right health to do so, he won't. Of course, this is about to be tested to the max because we are now fully entering our window.
  2. He would spend the money, whether it is used to the best possible advantage is another thing, however. A big part of me still wants Story to opt out (I don't believe he will), just to get away from the contract as I don't believe this year's form (and health) will continue, but it would require A LOT of work, leaving us with only (an often hurt) Mayer in the infield and Romy who should be platooning and not playing full time. Everyone else has huge question marks. And there's not a lot on the free agency list to get exited about
  3. Easily the MVP, which is saying something with Ohtani's performance. It doesn't feel like it now, but giving $300m to a pitcher that had never played in the MLB was a big risk. Man is it paying off.
  4. It's going to haunt them for years. They might not get this close for a decade or more. Plenty of chances to win it, but you have to tip your hat to the Dodgers - relentless. One of the best series I've seen in a long time. The Dodgers feel like they might just be getting a little old, however.
  5. I think the Sox will spend this summer and fairly big, but I think some of the proposals are fanciful to say the least. Henry does usually spend when the team is in a position to win, but it won't be wild spending. The real headache will come if Story opts out (I don't believe he will). Which is crazy as we'd have been desperate to get out of that deal a year ago. I think they likely offer the QO to Gio. He loves it here so may well take it, but there will be a market for him if he's proven healthy.
  6. If Phillies ate a lot of the contract or at the very least took Masa and Hicks off our hands, that would be something, but not sure I see either as very likely. He'd be a vast improvement on our 1st base for a few years, but it's still a risky contract to take on to say the least. Really hard to judge what it would take to get him out of there. Phillies clearly want to parse some payroll though. It's not an uninteresting proposal.
  7. Anyone looking for the sunny side of this deal is at least a couple of years too early, and it's still not going to have made any sense. It's a trade that will haunt this franchise for decades. That said, I do think they offered him a competitive and fair deal when they put $200m in front of him after his down season in Year 2. His mother made the right call, but it wasn't an insignificant amount of money to offer him. After that he was only ever getting superstar money however, and deserved every penny.
  8. Skubal is likely going to be on the trade block. Apparently, he and Detroit are $250m apart, so an extension would be miles north of $30m x 6. If he guarantees the extension with a deal, I'd trade virtually anyone for him that isn't Roman Anthony. I'd happily send them Mayer if they want to take the risk on his injuries.
  9. I wanted Alonso last off season. I want him again this one. Defence is a bit of a worry but that bat would be big.
  10. I thought the same thing when I read that part. We very much are one of those teams. And while I agree Bregman always planned to opt out, the injury lay off and then fall off of form was not planned for. He likely will, but I'm far from sure on it. In fact I've been leaning that he'd stay for a while now.
  11. Soto himself said they come for him hard. I get that it is hard to trust these guys after the thrift of the past half a decade, but I think we can put this one to bed.
  12. I'd quite like to see Mariners Brewers in the WS. I don't have any dog in the fight so I'll pick Mariners just because it would make Harmony happy, and they seem like good people.
  13. Preller loves Duran. He's going to want him or nobody from us I think.
  14. Oh that's sobering. I didn't realise it was that bad.
  15. This is true. But at least we'll have a little more clarity shortly after the WS. I'm still not convinced he's opting out. I would imagine Boras and Bres are in constant dialogue about the possibility of a restructured deal at the moment.
  16. It's crazy how much more solid and exciting our lineup would be if we knew we could pencil in Mayer to player 150 games at 2nd/SS. Let's hope this wrist thing is in the past now. I'm excited to see what Dobbins and Crawford can do next year. Casas is a write off for me. See if you can send him and Hicks together (instead of Duran as you suggested in the other thread) for nothing and clear the money. I originally entertained the idea they'd just non-tender Houck. But I don't think they'll do that now. They love an injury project. Narvaez is the big one. We need him coming through that injury clean and healthy and ready to go. Notin's idea to trade for Murphy feels more and more pressing by the day.
  17. Who? Who would want a light hitting, overpaid DH? Just to get Duran? Who's the fit, because I can;t think of anyone. We send Duran with Masa or Hicks, we get next to nothing back. The only reason you do something like the Masa deal (if you could pull it off) is if you're getting Schwarber through the door. That mitigates the nothing you'll be getting back in the deal. Otherwise it's a salary dump to lose Duran. No thanks.
  18. I'd love us to get Alonso but last year was the time to gamble on him. This past year likely puts him out of our range in both dollars and years, even if Bregman doesn't come back.
  19. Agreed, all the guesses and summations are not worth a lot right now, not until we know what Bregman is doing and where we stand financially. But in terms of the pitching, I wonder if/wouldn't mind if we package some of our younger highly rated pitchers into one ready pitcher now. Ryan is the obvious choice after the Twins sell off. Maybe we can give them a few of our pitchers with high ceilings but a year or two away for Ryan. Not sure if that would interest the Twins mind,. We have got A LOT of pitchers in the organisation. We're going to need to find ways to make them work for us at some point.
  20. I mean, we knew he was new to the job, right? Why are we ragging on him for actually learning as he's going? I swear people just search day and night for things to bitch about.
  21. The way teams view prospects has changed. They have no compunction in easing prospects in now and having them mostly platoon to start. As we saw virtually the entirety of Mayer's time when healthy. But regardless you mention Password being up in the scenario of Abreu and Duran being traded. We better have a fantastic pitcher and infielder back in those deals because we will have just weakened our outfield significantly if the Password is starting LFer. I think there's no chance of that happening, bar injuries. I'm not convinced one outfielder gets traded, never mind two. I think it's a lot longer than you think. When we badly needed offence in the last month he couldn't even earn a September call up. the kid has a long journey to prove he is MLB worthy. I hope he does, he seems like a super kid. My odds are against at the moment.
  22. I could not see this at all. If we go onto the season with those 4 players combining for LF, Bres has got something very, very wrong. Not to mention Masa will hardly ever see the field.
  23. It's not about giving up on him. He's not proven he's worthy of a spot. His offence isn't good enough and he's proven a bad defender at every position. It would be ridiculous to start the season with him in left. He's got a long road ahead of him before he proves himself worthy of anything yet. The Password would be risk enough - he should be the back up at best to start.
  24. Casas last year was a good example. It was patently clear that we as a fan base valued Casas way higher than opposing GMs.
  25. You cannot go into next season with Kristian Campbell as your starting outfielder. Or the Password. But most definitely not Campbell.
