    I don't usually worry about umpire calls. They're human. They make mistakes. But holy sh*t, the K to Valdez was a foot out of the strike zone and almost bounced in. Do umps get that badly fooled? I wonder if that's why some (I forget the name of one of them) wait a half second before making the call? I'd really like to hear from those who have actually called balls & strikes. I did a couple of times, and I have to say it was one of the worst days I've ever spent on an athletic field.

    Why not just admit that the simple case: Mookie wanted market value and found a team willing to pay him market value, which the RS were not willing to do? (The question of whether a player DESERVES market value or whether market value for a particular player is a good or bad deal, or who decides this, or whether 'players get paid too much'-- all these have nothing to do with the central issue).

    Desperately trying to follow intricate arguments (way too subtle and nuanced for my understanding) that seem to hinge on whether a team in a different league is bad or mediocre. I guess that's a sign of the depths to which the RS have fallen. Or perhaps everyone just decided to begin celebrating 4/20 a day early.

    Agree (sort of) that they are unlikely to get better. But they certainly COULD improve, if they committed to it (we're talking fielding here). (For those of us retirees, 25-28 does not seem past one's prime and incapable of learning anything). Alas, they likely won't. Devers knows what got him that $300million. It wasn't his glove. As for Duran, I may be imagining things, but to me he certainly has improved in the last couple of years, and they few things I've heard him say suggest he still will.
