  1. Ha ha! Get rid of them? And acquire what?
  2. Oof. RS defense strikes again.
  3. Pot, meet Kettle! Actually, the question I was interested in is how professional athletes 'budget' practice time--on their strengths? or weaknesses? My thought: amateurs should spend practice time on weaknesses; professionals should practice strengths (that's what got them there). Just heard a piece on Manny, who practiced hitting constantly. He never seriously practiced in the field, figuring (rightly) that his basic athletic ability would suffice.
  4. Didn't know that about Rice. I'd be curious to know what comparable players do today. (Again the psychological problem: do I take even a second away from my greatest skill so that I can be merely average in another). So different from us amateurs; since 'greatness' is out of reach for me, I'm apt to work to ensure I don't have any glaring and embarrassing weaknesses.
  5. These guys are professional athletes, and the ceiling has to be WAY higher than it would be for us. I imagine hitters reach it. But even if defense is 'teachable' (and I think it is), there just is only so much time in the day. If I'm a .260 hitter (or so), I KNOW what will keep me in the league is getting that up to .280. That's where I'm going to put my time, not in increasing my defensive abilities. I'm guessing it might be like basketball. There are great shooters who simply refuse to play defense (James Harden) or don't bother with it. If you're a good shooter and a mediocre defender, which would you try to be: A good shooter and good defender? (there are 100s of those), or a GREAT shooter and a mediocre defender? I just don't think professional athletes will take the time away from their primary skills to work on minor ones. (Some will, of course; but I suspect most will not).
  6. Oh right. I'm sure after every game he fires up his translator and goes straight to TalkSox.
  7. So the idea with all these trades is to find some GM willing to pay more than you are are for certain players, and/or who have players that you judge worth more than their previous teams are willing to pay. To make this work, all you need is a GM who is both better versed in economics and also a better judge of baseball talent than other GMs. How's that been working out the last five years or so?
  8. Isn't the problem w/ bringing up guys too early the same one w/ amateur athletes? Whether it's tennis or squash or even chess, everyone wants to play opponents who are better in the mistaken view that it will help them improve. It doesn't. Playing ONLY above your level gets you into very bad habits: in baseball, I assume, a lot of really defensive swings and tentative plays in the field.
  9. Didn't see it, but poor Dalbec must be completely lost. I thought he was having a decent spring, and now goes Daniel Bard on us?
  10. Yeah and Mookie went 1-6. Thank god we got rid of those guys!
  11. As owner or GM, I would count my cash, make vacation plans, and shake my head thinking "I can't believe my customers still pay money to see this cr*p."
  12. SpSp wasn't complaining about the RS success (a point you address here). He was complaining about their failures--i.e., their last place finishes.
  13. Yes. But it took a while.
  14. Oh God. Here we go!! As (was it OB?) who said: "The infield is just not major league level."
  15. If large corporations and businesses hired and fired and set salaries on the basis of justice and fairness, we wouldn't need unions. However, they do not. Angel Hernandez is a very small price to pay. My attitude, whenever my bosses talk giddily about 'getting rid of deadwood,' has always been that I like to keep as much deadwood between me and the buzz-saw as possible.
  16. "When healthy ..." Good one. Stop! You're killing me!
  17. Manny was the best hitter I ever saw. And the catch, high five to the fan, and doubling the guy off first, makes up for any fielding deficiencies and history!
  18. Pretty sure Higgins was manager when Pumpsie Green was brought up. So also, Earl Wilson (of no-hitter fame). Also served as GM, right?
  19. Is Cronin responsible for that racist f*ck Pinky Higgins as manager? Who ended up in jail for DUI homicide? (THAT, I didn't know).
  20. Yeah, these division things suck. For one thing, the Red Sox don't get to play the Red SOx! WTF! Every other team in the division does.
  21. Is Mike Greenwell available to catch?
  22. Well that's it, then! No way I'll pay the new prices (of course, I haven't been to a game in Fenway in two decades, but still ...)
  23. When did Devers change his set-up? Has he been doing this all year?
  24. So how's that deal with his replacement working out?
  25. And of course the gigantic flag so all present can proclaim their patriotism and love of the military (the intensity of which is generally inversely proportionate to the amount of time these teary-eyed chauvinists actually SPENT in the service.)
