  1. What a terribly hurtful thing to say to someone who has already expressed sensitivity to what he considers our psychological "insecurities" (i.e., the fact that we do not suitably address his particular needs).
  2. Not being a doctor, I had naively assumed that something called 'microfracture surgery' was a procedure designed to CURE microfractures. It never occurred to me that it created such fractures in the hopes that the dumb-ass body would try essentially to cure the wrong thing. Having finally looked at the list of athletes who have had it (among them Greg Oden, YIKES!), I can now see why the RS need to consider another 2nd base man.
  3. Hello, George? Yeah, this is a RS fan, and I ... What? George? He's dead? Holy s***. OK. Well listen, about Reggie, I ... What? ... Why Jackson of course ... What? He's not there anymore? Oh, well listen, about that guy Posada, I ... What do you mean you don't know what I'm talking about? I'm trying to help. Look, I think Rivera should start, and ... What? You're kidding! ...
  4. I have long since learned to pay no attention to your competitors/'colleagues'/enemies' analysis of how you should run your life.
  5. Is it fantasy sports? or the idiocy of the NBA lottery system that has now made armchair fans believe that the primary goal of every team should be to tank? even, say, when your team has the best record in the league.
  6. What I remember about that day was that Clemens grabbed a bat and was futilely demanding to pinch hit against him. That would have been a great match-up.
  7. Did someone just mention the "killer instinct" of the old Sox teams? I assume you must be under 30. But as long as the Sox are the best team in baseball, I don't care what kind of instinct they have.
  8. C'mon Moon! This is all you got??
  9. You're supposed to find an illegal stream, like ordinary folks.
  10. By the same token, no team is going to be stupid enough to sign a fat, out-of-shape 3baseman for 100million dollars. Nor are they going to sign a Cuban outfielder for 70 million who has never seen a major league curve ball. Nor give 80 million to an aging shortstop who they will then put in left field. Baseball GMs are just way too smart to do anything like that.
  11. Of course. How could anyone possibly disagree?
  12. Ha. We're about the same age, I think, and I have been very careful to distinguish my memory from facts for a long long time.
  13. That's the problem! We are 70 years old. Welcome to being 6 again.
  14. Except for those two or three games last week when he was served up nothing but belt high fast balls and couldn't even get a foul ball. Whatever that was about, it seems to have been fixed.
  15. You may well be right. The only lack of hustle I ever saw was when he was in LF--and I'm not sure that was a matter of hustle or simple competence--and then when he was on (I forget whom) and failed to retrieve the hit in left, sauntering out instead of running. But I'm seen nothing like that here (not saying it didn't exist--I've just not seen it. Once he had a regular position at first, he seemed much more involved). I love watching him hit, and I hope he catches on somewhere.
  16. Tired of talking about the past? Fear not. In a couple of decades or so (believe me!) that's all you'll want to do.
  17. Yeah, you know . First it's dreads, and the next thing you know, they'll be playing that all that out-of-tune music, having sex, and smoking funny cigarettes.
  18. Oh. You're right again. I forgot we were on an ESPN board momentarily, and actually thought we were trying to have a civil conversation. My bad.
  19. OK. I'll take your word for it. And true, where I worked most of my colleagues didn't give a rat's ass when someone got f'ed over, for the very reason that it didn't affect them directly and they believed they themselves (and they alone) knew everything they needed to know about their job.
  20. I agree. But the one subtlety I do notice, given my expert eyes and experience, is that when he's on a hot streak, he tends to get a much higher % of hits than he does when he's not. (Let me know if you need any more insights into his game.)
  21. I worked for a company where this attitude was widespread: "Don't worry, that doesn't affect us, only that other division ..." But my view was always "we might be next." I would imagine that various agents are deeply concerned with what happens to Hanley, since it will serve as a precedent for what might happen to their own clients. And I would think the Players' Association feels the same way, since if there is a grey area there (and we seem to agree that we don't know for certain whether there is or not!), they'll want it addressed.
  22. OK. Martinez got a hit. Recall him.
  23. NBA has what's called an Amnesty clause, whereby you can release a player under certain circumstances (I can't recall what those are), and although you pay whatever was owed (NBA salaries, like MLB, are guaranteed), what you pay doesn't count against the cap. MLB doesn't have anything like that as far as I know, and the rules in the NBA I think severely restrict when and how often it can be used.
  24. Short answer: yes it does. RS has to pay the difference between what the new team pays and what the contract was, and all they have to pay counts against the luxury tax. Pablo's number definitely counts, and so will everything owed Hanley (including the next year, depending on what happens with the vesting option that we've been discussing in various ways here.)
  25. Both Holt and Martinez hitless! DFA them!
