  1. Ah. Thanks. I guess grey-market streams don't feel obliged to send reminders, and turning on the radio? ... well, that's just so last year.
  2. Anyone at the game? Weather report?
  3. Well, a .700 winning percentage is a bit better than what I'm used to. But maybe it's just the Polyanna in me.
  4. I don't take the content real seriously, but the juvenile sexist and homophobic slurs are tedious and should be embarrassing to those who cannot seem to restrain themselves. I'm sure all this seemed extremely bad-ass when we were, say, 10 years old. It's boring now. Another way to block these overgrown pre-pubescents is to go to "settings" on the upper right of the page (on the red border).
  5. "Save" is a completely artificial stat (well, so are all others, I suppose). A guy who can only perform in 'save situations' is a guy who is more concerned with stats than production. (Although in fairness to Kimbrel, I don't recall him ever saying anything about only coming in in certain situations--maybe his agent has?) Can you imagine a batter saying "Sorry. I only hit with an 0-0 count." Or a fielder-- "Nope. I'm not standing out here if they're going to hit ground balls; I only do pop-ups."
  6. Trying to get Hanley hurt? The conspiracy theory is absurd. Isn't the manager's job to try to get the team to win as many games as possible? One way to do that right now is to play Hanley. (as in tonight).
  7. Until that swing by Bradley, I thought the phrase "to miss a ball by a foot" was a hyperbole.
  8. Plus he was married to MMonroe! To be in the company of Arthur Miller--that ain't nothin'! I never saw JD play either, but I was sitting in a small espresso shop in Little Italy (La Roma, I think), when he walked in-- a fairly ordinary looking guy. Must have been for the Old TImers game that year? I didn't recognize him at first, but his awful (in the old sense) presence just filled the room.
  9. Has tanking now become the Holy Grail of pro-sports? Am I really seeing discussion of a first place team getting rid of starting pitchers and an ace closer for prospects? Or have I missed several onion-like layers of irony here?
  10. The image that is burned in my memory is the look Frank Malzone used to give over his shoulder when one went through his legs--a look that he had many many opportunities to practice. He was a gold glove 3b, whose errors were attributed to his ability to get to balls that other third basemen couldn't touch. (He also had difficulty with balls hit directly at him, which is not all that rare a weakness!)
  11. Not a bad swing by Devers either.
  12. Yeah, that catch was decent.
  13. If your prediction of his hitting career is correct, I'm more than happy to lose this argument!
  14. OMG! We disagree. The sky will fall. Perhaps the best way to put it is that the chances that Devers' D will improve are much better than the chances that JBJ will become a decent and consistent hitter. But of course, by any ordinary definition, JBJ is the better athlete.
  15. Agree entirely. But he and a couple of others who throw around sexist and homophobic language as if they were bad-ass kids on a middle school playground don't bother me, thanks to the 'block' function.
  16. Something must be wrong with this board, or I'm not thinking clearly. Because I seem to agree with all of this!
  17. Yup. I know that. I just don't believe in the virtue of 'defensive replacements'. And we've probably belabored the point. I love watching him in the field, but if he can't produce at the plate, it's not a good use of a roster spot.
  18. If those players are better than Bradley early in the game, they are better than Bradley late in the game as well.
  19. I'm not worried about Devers. He's young and a great athlete--he can learn to be better defensively by working on it. Not sure, alas, that applies to hitting. The bigger problem is thus CF.
  20. IRS-- Just block that guy. That's what I did.
  21. Maybe. It actually looked to me as if he made an adjustment in the swing when he saw the change--not sure which is more impressive.
  22. Obviously should have had a defensive replacement in for Martinez.
  23. Wouldn't it have to be an error (or scored as 'interference')? It would be the same scoring that would apply if a regular fielder caught a ball, say, in his hat. (It was kind of silly, because of course, Vasquez' move was automatic--what anyone would do. Sort of like a batter retrieving a foul ball rolling at his feet w/ his bat. Unfortunately, the rule applies, so when a catcher takes his mask off, thefirst thing he has to train himself to do is TOSS it.) I don't think I've ever seen this. Wonder what the call would have been had there been no one on base? Anyone know? Why wouldn't the batter be awarded first?
  24. Stats geeks: help me out here. Has anyone ever tried to quantify the virtue of "defensive replacements"? i.e., what are the chances of an opposing player hitting a home run vs. the chances of a ball hit, say, just out of reach of JD, but within the range of Benitendi? (and that matched with the size of the bat replaced). I ask this in all seriousness, because I can't imagine that Gene Stephens ever made a game-saving throw or catch that Williams could not have made. Weren't these classic 'defensive replacement' moves made when games were more or less decided? (it was a matter of resting Williams, not replacing him).
  25. Plus he hit one about 390 to end it as well, no? I've always liked Nunez, and it would be good to see him start hitting like that again.
