  1. Anyone over 70 know what a tivo is?
  2. Watching the game. I hear there is a GREAT fielding centerfielder on the field who costs almost nothing and also can hit over .200. Annoyed as I am with JBJ's failures at the plate, there's probably nothing to be done, at least this year. No one is going to take his salary, and the RS might just as well pay him to play for them as pay him to play for someone else.
  3. Well, other than the tepid way they've played the last month.
  4. I have always hated games like that. I want to see hitters do something I can't do. (E.g., I think my swing at those out of the zone balls that JBJ hacked at would have been late and slow enough that the umpire would have assumed I was simply taking a practice swing prior to the next pitch--result? a bases-loaded, game-tying walk!)
  5. Yes, all these other criticisms of the team are valid. This thread, however, is about JBJ, who is among the worst hitters in MLB and has one of the worst looking swings in the league. Someone with that athletic ability, who has been playing prof. baseball for so long, should be able fix that. And right: learning to bunt, or simply working on the strike zone, would be a great place to start.
  6. Hitting isn't easy. That's why they pay those who can do it millions and why most major leaguers CAN do it. I don't think JBJ is being reviled for striking out 'there'. It's for the dozens of times he's done it elsewhere this year. (Btw, I love watching JBJ play and I have always rooted for him. I would just rather see him play for a different team.)
  7. I must have seen TSW play left quite a bit when I was a kid. I don't recall him as being terrible out there (and besides, there was always Gene Stephens), but I also don't recall him EVER running into the wall or even putting himself at risk of doing that. (Please find me the film showing I'm wrong: at age 10 or so, I never imagined I would be asked to recall anything.)
  8. I'm blanking on the name of the reliever who almost threw his arm off trying to salvage games in those days (late 50s I think) ... Mike Forneles?
  9. There's been something of a Beckett revival here (in LA) in the last few years. What is somewhat alarming is that the audiences are almost all my age (70+) or older. Beckett really spoke to us when we were 20, but apparently doesn't seem to do much for younger people today (or perhaps they just don't go to the theatre). Oh well, you can't step into the same pus twice.
  10. Thank God for Google. I thought you were referring to the Beckett play!
  11. Havlicek stole the ball.
  12. But then again, there are a few CFers in the league who can make great plays and ALSO hit occasionally. (Did you see Trout's catch last night?)
  13. C. Hardy was my favorite player as a kid. Geiger was the favorite of my brother. I was also very partial to Jerry Casales. (Williams, Jensen ... you know, they were just way too mainstream!)
  14. Unfortunately, for me, the "past" you claim I should be living in had names like Gary Geiger, Ike Delock, Don Buddin etc. No thanks. As for the Bruins, their 'original six' days were somewhat less glorious than those w/ Bobby Orr et al.
  15. Exactly. When I saw him in AA just before he came up (I hadn't heard of him), he looked like he was in a different league from the others--rather like when Major leaguers are re-habbing there. Great fielder, I thought (he made a couple of spectacular plays), not much at the plate. So much for the 'eye-test'. Or 'small sample size'. Nonetheless, the idea that he is unathletic is silly.
  16. At a .138 clip, how does he deserve more than that?
  17. Yup. And then simply replace with all those readily available Cy Young candidates. I really don't see why the RS stick with these guys.
  18. Well yes, he won the MVP for the ALCS which was great to see. But let's not get carried away: even in that series, his average was .200 (hardly Manny-esque), as it was through the entire post-season. That, given his defense, I suppose is acceptable. But a couple of weeks of that is not going to make up for his (now customary) abysmal start at the plate.
  19. Yeah, concussions. Big whoop. What's a brain injury? Just shake it off the way the bad-ass sports-boards posters do. And being half blind! Come on. Grow a pair.
  20. How was Devers "not ready" when he was called up? He hit .284 the first year up in almost 60 games. I know it's traditional to claim this, but I don't see what the evidence is.
  21. What? Are you 10 years old? Why not get real enemies instead of inventing them on the internet.
  22. Exactly. Thanks for looking this up.
  23. There is no way the CBA is so poorly written as to allow such a loophole, which has the sole purpose of avoiding luxury tax that is obviously due..
  24. I'll take that bet!
  25. It would stop me from trying. Maybe this is why I don't have any friends who are corporations.
