  1. I think to make a true judgement on a player you need to take all of them (OPS and WAR) into account. As flawed as they may be, you can still compare one player to another. Where a player plays also has to be taken into consideration. Playing in Boston and at Fenway brings other elements into the equation.
  2. In October they are all big games. Pitching and defense wins championships, and right now I’m a little concerned about the Sox starting pitching. Sale and Porcello are the only two starters that I feel comfortable with right now. You need at least that third pitcher you can count on. Right now in a big game I don’t know what Price, Rodriguez, Wright, or Pomeranz will give you. Until one or two of them shows me something against the better teams I am concerned about the Sox starting pitching.
  3. Hitting and scoring a lot of runs is great and gets you a lot of wins from April to September, but defense and pitching win games in October and championships. Good pitching stops good hitting, and good defense is vital to good pitching. You have to look no further then last weekend against the Spankees. Friday and Sunday the Sox got no starting pitching and they got crushed. Sale shut down that same team that scored 19 runs in the other two games. JBJ had that defensive gem on the Judge ball. That is why JBJ’s defense always has to weigh heavily in deciding whether he plays or not.
  4. Glad it was JDM instead of Mike Stanton and that crazy contract that the Spankees took on that Sox got this past offseason. The more you see him, and here about his approach the more there is to like. Now until he does this in October I will not make any comparisons to Big Papi. As good as he has been so far with the bat, he may be even a better teammate with all you hear about his interactions with his teammates.
  5. A lot of good thoughts in this post. I root for JBJ big time. This team is winning despite his struggles. Every time you start thinking it is time to move on from him he makes one of those plays. I’ve heard several times that he has hit with a lot of bad luck this year. He is never going to be a.300 hitter, but I still think he is a net positive player for this team.
  6. Agree. There a lot of things going on when a pitcher takes too much time between pitches. They are over thinking, the batter gets more time to think, the fielders get back on their heels, and causes time of games to expand. Pitchers that get the ball and pitch quickly seem to always have the hitter on their heels. That is even more prominent when they can get ahead of the hitter with a strike one. Sox pitchers need to look no further then watching Sale pitch.
  7. With the Spankees lineup the Sox need production out of their catching position. Hopefully, the production Vaz had last year continues with the more innings he catches in 2018.
  8. How many pitchers have hurt themselves running the bases? With pitching so important why would you do it?
  9. If It was JD, better there then in the Bronx.
  10. I don’t think teams mine paying the large dollar amounts. I think it’s the length of the contracts that are the issue. If players would be willing to sign 3 to5 year deals instead of the 7 year plus ones I think teams wouldn’t mine paying the big $$$$$$$$! To many long term contracts go bad well before the end.
  11. I think in a way that is what is happening. Can anyone name one of those players that signed a 7 plus year contract that the team got its value over the course of the whole contract? Teams are no longer willing to pay for 3 or 4 years with below or with no production. If players want these long term contracts make them Have some of the years based on production. For example maybe guarantee 5 years at a set rate, and then the last 2 or 3 years based on the players production. If player produces he still gets paid big $$$$$$$. If he doesn’t then the total amount of money goes down. A contract like that would be fair to both parties. Because in the end the group that is paying for those crazy contracts are the fans. When a player turns down a 5 year $125 million dollar contract what are fans to think?
  12. There are a lot of strikeouts in the Spankee lineup. Hopefully, Sox pitching gets their fair share of them.
  13. Jeter can now sell his share to the Marlins because his job is done. In June Spankees announce Jeter is taking a job in their front office. This is why the Yankees are hated!
  14. Vazquez should catch more innings, but I would be careful on how many. A tired Vazquez will be less productive with the bat.
  15. If Hanley proves that he is healthy he may be easier to move. The Sox still will have to eat some of the $$$$ this year and possible next year. Signing JD to mainly DH should be the plan. Sox won’t let Ramirez reach the ABs needed, thus the signing of Moreland. If Moreland ends up on the bench more there are not a lot of dollars there.
  16. JBJ defense is off the charts, while Xander’s is so so at short. That is why people are quicker to want to move him.
  17. Because of the slow FA market there are going to be many players who end up signing 1 year deals in January. The key will be for DD to sign a depth SP to go along with the power bat. Does the slow market mean that teams are done with the long contracts for big dollars that never see a player productive to the end, or are they waiting for next off season.
  18. I think as a hitter you don’t want to be predictable. A lot depends on who is pitching and how they are pitching. If a pitcher knows that a hitter is always taking the first pitch it changes their approach. If a hitter mixes it up then becomes unpredictable and harder to pitch to. I know that with teams improving bullpens running up the pitch count is not as important.
  19. The FA market has been slow to get going. I still think Martinez is DD main target. I think January is going to be crazy! Something still may happen with Hanley? If JD doesn’t happen does Nunez return? I don’t think the Sox go to spring training as is.
  20. I agree. If you loss Devers or Benni (Two young power hitting contracts that the Sox have control of for the next 5 to 6 years) then its not hard to make the trade.
  21. I think Cora will be a better communicator with the players (Already reached out to Price) and have only heard good things about him. I think this is a good move.
  22. The announcement of his passing is the first I heard anything about him having cancer. From all I read he was a future star with a bright future. It really shocking when someone so young passes. RIP!
  23. He is probably more of a sounding board for DD, and won't be anywhere near the dugout.
  24. I'm hearing Cardinals and west coast teams have best shot at Stanton.
  25. Chavis is the top hitter in the system right now and if the Sox have to trade to get their power bat he will be included.
