I have no problem with them doing more to upgrade as long as it doesn’t get too costly. I’m assuming that Dobbins is back next year. He is young and still a bit untested but he for sure isn’t Kutter Crawford or Tanner Houck. He’s young but he is powerful and he knows how to pitch.

We have a couple of people who have posted it as being a primary concern. That is just fodder for the fire as far as I’m concerned. It is a none issue. the man can catch. A hit now and then would just be great for sure. I’ve been kicking around as a Sox fan since 55 and I have seen a whole bunch of backup catchers as well as starting catchers for them over the years. Wong just isn’t that bad. We have bigger issues.

Hmm this is where I could shine by saying don’t forget that one of our pressing needs is a backup catcher! lol just kidding .

Many here seem to be willing to lose about anything in order to sign a pitcher that might slot in to the #2 hole. I guess I’m that guy who thinks that right now we have a staff with two #2’s on it right now. I couldn’t be happier. It would never hurt to add another front liner but I think the Sox should be dealing from strength in any possible trade talks they might have. We have needs like everybody has but what’s not to like? My summer has been great.

Story will be back. I would sign Bregman for life so that he could coach for us when his playing days are done. I would also resign Giolito as well as Chapman. As for Casas, I think that they should have gotten rid of him when he wasn’t interested in signing long term just a few years ago. He has accomplished nothing. I don’t know how Campbell will make out. His future is very much up in the air. Mayer’s injury history worries me. He really has had trouble staying on the field since he was signed.

I;m hoping. that maybe they realized they don’t need one. Wong can catch. Anyone expecting more from a backup catcher just really wants it all. Not necessary.

who wants to stand in there against Tolle? He is a beast and looks the part. We have some potentially very solid pitching depth in our system.

I don’t think that the post is a case of “poor poor Vaughn “. I just think it is a little confusing to understand the overall move. We have many micro managers here who obviously know more about how the inner workings of the system operate than others. When a player is performing apparently about as well ans any field payer at the AAA level and doesn’t get a look in this instance it is confusing that is about it. I find this much more confusing than trying to figure out the moves and lack there off at the trade deadline. If it is about the pitching being so poor at the AAA level, are any of our prospects at any level all that good? “

When I first saw Anthony that is exactly what I thought. He does look like both a young Yaz and the greatest Ted. Obviously for now that is where the comparisons end but he is exciting to watch. I’ve said repeatedly that this team has something special going on. It is what the metrics and analytics cannot measure. They like each other and are pulling hard for each other. You can’t underestimate how important that is for any team in any sport. it looks like they are undermanned but they just keep grinding along. For me that is what it is all about.

I guess just about everyone posting here would have liked to have seen more done to improve us. Probably there could have been something more substantial. I just think that the asking price would likely have been way too high. I like our current team. I’m going to continue to enjoy them. I can see why everyone wanted Duran. I’m glad that I still get to enjoy him in a Sox uniform. The lack of a Grissom move still puzzles me. Regardless of what he has faced for pitching, he has done everything that he could do.

And the trade deadline has come and gone. I’m just a silly old fan who knows quite a bit about the actual play on the field and next to nothing about the inner workings of management. In my estimation based on what I have seen on the field, I do consider Cora to be an average manager who likes his players and they seem to like him. With respect to Breslow, I’m just as confused by what he does or doesn’t do as anyone - average at best. With all that said, I still like this team and have enjoyed watching this season. I’ll continue to do so. I’m glad that Duran remains a Red Sox player. I can’t believe that no team would want Abreau. I wish that Mayer wasn’t prone to injury. I do not like the multiple position approach to so many players and I really don’t like the constant lefty righty lefty righty approach to our lineups based on an analytical approach to the game. Oh well - dog days have begun.

Thanks for the links. Grissom had a little to say about not being called up. It has to be confusing for young ball players who are actually playing well to not get a call up when it seems like the logical move. I’m not a big fan of either of these guys really but in Grissom’s case, he has played nearly 90 games for Worcester and has had a pretty good year. If their numbers are skewed by bad pitching after more than a half a season, I’m thinking that none of our minor leaguers should feel comfortable. They all could be traded for the right numbers of veterans. At this point in time, I would think that only Anthony has shown that he has what it takes to really move forward.

I thought the Sox would give both Jordan and Grissom a shot. Much like Jordan I guess, I’ve been informed that Grissom also only hit well against poor pitchers at the AAA level. With that in mind, I don’t dive as deeply as some do into who the better pitchers are at the AAA level. I’m going to guess that I’m not the only one who checks our guys in the farm by following their stat line. I’d like to know who in our system is actually worth anything. How about Campbell or even Mayer? Are they really as good as once it seemed?

Oh for sure jokes are great. How about the one I heard this spring about the guy Telling Jim Rice that his suggestions when asked by a young player were not what was taught these days. I thought that that was a great one.

He has been injury prone. I hope that it is just a case of the kid’s bad luck. A healthy everyday Mayer could some day be very good.

Wow - Let’s give it up to the metric and analytical minds doing their thing I guess. I haven’t seen him play, Have any of you? I guess that I was thinking that maybe he provided an option that might have been an improvement over Hamilton. Whatever - it was just a thought. I think that it helps to get as much information as you can about any player.

I think that your takes on this are pretty good. I don’t think that is as simple as simply saying he can’t do something at the ml level when he has been given no chance. Whether he ever gets the chance in Boston, who knows but it just looks like another mystery to me.

Do we know this for sure? One thing we do kind of know is that Hamilton can’t . I like Hamilton on a team that has an abundance of hitters. We ain’t that. Either trade Grissom to somebody for anybody or give him at least a look.

Now I’m really wondering about Grissom. He’s having a solid year in Worcester. Mayer goes down which sadly isn’t unusual and we bring up Hamilton? Unless they are trading him tomorrow, what about this move makes any sense? Sometimes the decisions made by the front office really do seem confusing.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens. When Mayer went down, as was previously mentioned, I was surprised they didn’t bring Grissom up just to give him a shot. I really hope the “need for a backup catcher” doesn’t pick up any steam. given a chance to play, I think that Wong would hit. I’m pretty happy with this team overall but they really could use a bigger bat in that lineup. Diaz? Everybody wants and needs pitching for sure but making a big time costly trade for anyone right now might not be such a good idea.

Ty - As I’ve watched them, I think that it is obvious that they are a special group. Might not win a World Series just yet, but they won’t quit.

I have enjoyed watching this team. They are young and resilient. Sometimes I don’t think that they are as good as they look. I just think that something very special is at work here. With respect to trading any player on this roster who can hit just a little bit, I think would be the wrong decision unless he is replaced by someone who hits better - note I didn’t say pitches. It is sad that Devers really did choose to not be a part of this team - and I do think that it was his choice plus I’m not at all sad that he is gone. I would love to see that certain top of the rotation guy or the next best thing brought in but not at the expense of this current roster. What I would really like to see is a real professional hitter brought in to play first base. The kind of guy I would want though I don’t think exists. Someone who could care less about exit velocity and all of the rest of the analytical ways for a hitter to face a pitcher. Maybe someone who just hits the ball hard and hates to strike out. Oh by the way I would like to see Bregman signed for whatever. He like us and we like him. His type of real leadership is too valuable to lose.

We all know that this team as is isn’t going to win a WS but I am sick of all the potential trade rumors. We have been fleeced by so many trades over the years that it is time to at least pretend that we deal from a position of strength. Trading either Duran or Abreu means we lose offense. Not good when you have a team that needs offense. I get that everybody needs pitching but trading Tolle just seems foolish. He’s young, big and strong. We need pitchers like him. I don’t know what they will or won’t do but I really hope that we don’t get jacked again.
