Devers Ready To Play WHEREVER The Giants Need Him To
cp176 replied to king koji's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Maher’s ability to play defense alone is enough to get excited about. Watching him just swing the bat is enough to get me going. I think that of the group, he looks very special. You have to keep Anthony in the lineup for some time just to figure out what he has at this stage of development. Campbell looks absolutely lost. -

I really like the way our rookies play but I’ll say once again that I do not understand how anyone could have come to the conclusion that Campbell should have come up before Mayer. Mayer is the better player and at this point it isn’t even close. Campbell is just thrashing at the ball and hoping he gets some contact. Hope he figures it out. . -
OKthis is for Max I guess. I’m very much old school myself. Giolito is a long way from being a bust. What is Pivetta being Paid? Campbell is not really as bad as some paint him out to be. He’s a kid. It really isn’t his fault that he was brought up too soon. Shorten up the swing- see the ball, hit the ball!. No one can ever convince me that Mayer shouldn’t have been the first one up. He will be a star for this team until they trade him away. Campbell, regardless of the euphoria, I doubt was ready. Crochet of course looked tired but he is a horse. He did what his team needed him to do today. 3 hits is somewhat south of sickening. Bullpen got it done.

On Casas, if nothing else as he rehabs, I hope that he has learned something from this Devers horror show. Be a baseball player. I’m not particularly interested in ever again listening to him as he talks to the press. Should have signed the deal the Sox offered I think. I’m glad he didn’t. He is fortunate that he likely gets a redo. -
Very true - the Mookie pain lasted forever. As a matter of fact it is still lasting forever.

Pretty soon the grieving process will be over and we’ll be on to something else.. I was particularly torn up when we lost Mookie but I’ve already moved on from Devers - imagine that. He did good and now he is gone. Yoshida to dh - he can hit. No one seeing things clearly would ever want him to play anywhere in the field but he can hit. Not Devers of course but he can hit. Let s go we are playing a game tonight.

I don’t care if Yoshida ever throws another baseball or even wanders onto the outfield grass but until they dream up a better situation, I would like to see him in the lineup yesterday. The guy can hit. No one is likely to produce What Devers gave and was giving anytime soon but we need a player who can actually make solid contact some of the time. I’m already over the Devers loss. I was a fan just not a great fan. Of course the management could have done a better job with him but I feel no need to know anything more about him than I saw on the field. Upward and onward…

Dobbins did kind of come out of nowhere but watching him pitch for each of his starts, he has gone from a pleasant surprise to someone who looks like he could have a very good career moving forward. Being big, strong and young with a high end fastball and control certainly helps. He won’t be great every time he pitches but I won’t miss watching when his turn comes.
-
I think that Yoshida is still very capable of stepping into that dh role and producing. He is a hitter. He won’t produce the big hits like a Devers but very few can. He just will hit and that is what we need.

And therein lies a good chunk of the problem - Devers is one heck of a hitter but should never have been projected as the face of any franchise. It was a role that looks like he never really wanted. He is a baseball player and that is it. The whole Devers issue was seemingly mismanaged from the start. I’m not defending management in this one by any means, but trading him seemed inevitable once he wasn’t willing to accept a role that the team needed him to accept. 0 excuse for that. I don’t think that there was nor was there ever any evidence to suggest that he was a “cancer in the clubhouse” but something had to give. Just a ballplayer. Good luck to him in his new home.

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II

I understand and you are right. David Hamilton may likely have run his course in Fenway. I guess what I’m really trying to say is that if Campbell isn’t going to play regularly then send him down. I believe Mayer is a much better option at second base when Bergman returns. No real place for Campbell. -

I think that he is the logical player to go down in order to keep Mayer where he is. He really should have been sent down a while ago. Abreau/Duran/? Who knows right. Should be playing Mayer every single day. -

When Abreau returns and someone has to get conveniently injured or simply sent down, my pick would be Campbell. Regardless of the signs of life lately, I think that he could use a little extra work. I would choose to never send Mayer anywhere but possibly second base for a short visit. I’ll always believe that he should have come up first. He looks poised and confident. His hitting will come but he looks very poised in the field to me. -
I’m not going to argue with this point at all. Mayer hitting 2 home runs in a game, didn’t really factor in to my comment about both Mayer and Anthony. It is about the overall talent they have as compared to anyone on the roster that might be chosen to replace them. Looks to me as though Mayer is playing the field like a seasoned veteran. People with their types of unique talent need to be given a chance to hit mlb pitching regardless of what the metrics say. Let’s see what they can do I say. There really isn’t much to lose I think.

Seriously? I’ve had my share of battles here as well but thought I’d give it another try. Same posters for the most part, same old same old. It’s a site that is a little less toxic than before but oh well. I’m a person that isn’t normally 100% that I’m right about most things. There certainly are people here who feel that they are. And that’s ok. i do enjoy the banter but for me it is really about the baseball and maybe even learning some new perspectives about the game. I hope this site continues to be enjoyable for me.

Not bringing Mayer up early after the spring that he had puzzled me. It certainly should come as no surprise that he looks and plays like he should have been there since day one. He and Anthony both should be in the lineup whether there are lefties or righties for anyone on the mound. Constantly playing the analytics game makes me sick. It should be obvious to anyone that Mayer should be in the lineup and once he gets going Anthony will likely be right there with him.

I just think that it is about time. All 3 of those kids are here. It gives me another reason to watch them.
