  1. Prospects is the key word here. Have to slow down with Swihart. I think you definitely keep him. I don't know what would define a high end pitching prospects. I'm not sure they are high end as in top of the rotation prospects. Maybe maybe not.
  2. I actually like your opinion. I'm not so sure he really wanted to sign with Boston. Once he left, I felt it was a done deal. I do think that top talent leading off your rotation is important and I don't see it currently in Boston or in the system really. I think that it will be there eventually.
  3. Someone will get him to play in a very pitcher friendly park. I think that he would just have to fall into the laps of the Red Sox in order for them to bite. They very well might see him as a player in decline and not likely to be successful in Fenway. He could certainly be an innings eater and might be someone that would help them. He is a proven gamer for sure.
  4. I am still trying to figure out how I feel about the loss of Renaudo. The move might be worth it - hope it is. When we start talking youth and Rodriguez, Owens, Barnes, I certainly see him as a fit in that group.
  5. I agree with you but I think that discounting Salty plate framing is something that we have had in Boston over the years. Fisk obviously was a great one but I don't think that I have seen a better arm from a catcher in a Red Sox uniform. It's the overall package that makes the position so special and demanding. Not to mention the fact that it is very physically demanding. this guy does look like a Molina back there. Swihart's overall ability might be this guy's only issue. He can't do anything about that.
  6. Plate framing or lack thereof cost Saltalamacchia a job in Boston. It is a teachable skill, some just do it better than others. Combining that with his ability to discourage movement on the bases and Vasquez keeps runs from scoring. Worth quite a few points on that batting average.
  7. Although none of us know, I tend to agree with you with respect to our young pitchers. Just a matter of who and when. I do think that Rodriguez (who might not quite be ready at 21) and Owens are the two who could be the most impactful.
  8. I guess he has been down there in catcher heaven for a good part of his life.
  9. I think that there is some legit fear that Shields has not pitched well in Fenway. I agree with you about what he has done and about his leadership abilities. Workman says he is willing to do whatever but he wants to get that shot again. You probably saw the great article on Vasquez today. He has been hanging with the Molina brothers - about the best instruction he could get. I did realize that he set a record last year - 51%- runners thrown out. He might be good enough to get away with hitting .240.
  10. I wonder if they have any interest in him at all. In a way I wish that they did but if they have a plan, he might not fit into it. Porcello for this year - Masterson for one year. lThey might really be counting on one of the youngsters to step up this year - Rodriguez - Owens - Barnes- Johnson. Workman may even get another chance to start. I have to say that I don't expect much from Wright. I also hate the thought of a knuckleballer in the pen. (If) (When) they make a move, I think that it is going to be for a bigger fish though.
  11. Now I see what you mean with the irony. That one had me stumped for a little while.
  12. I haven't been posting here very long but no moderator I guess? Did not realize that when I registered. Common courtesy and respect for other opinions not a viable expectation?
  13. So true - We hope they have a plan.
  14. You won't get blasted by me. I think that it is sad that anybody gets blasted for stating their opinion anyway. He has had a Pedroia like winter. I think that it very well may pay off for him. Sounds like he has really worked on his overall quickness with a concentration on his footwork. He is young and for him to be willing to put in the hard work I think says a lot about him and his potential. He just needed a little more range and he might have found it. I agree with you that last year he looked slow footed and that did put him in positions where bad throws had to come from. I am really curious to see how he looks this spring.
  15. I will leave you folks with a little parting thought. Really not a fan of XB's defensive ability at all last year. I do think that he will hit. He has my respect by how hard he has worked this winter. It sounds like he knew exactly what he needed to work on and has addressed the issues. Quicker feet, better lateral movement. If he wants it as badly as it sounds like he does, I'm willing to believe in him. He is big, young and athletic. If he has done and continues to do the work it takes, he very well might become a special player.
  16. One of Rick Pitino's finest moments
  17. That looks like the mitt Gus Triandoos used to catch Hoyt Wilhelm.
  18. A couple meaning two hopefully everyone would agree with . The only conclusion that could be jumped to at this time is that Vasquez is a solid major league catcher. It is early, but I think that he looks pretty good. Another conclusion might be that various other teams would like to trade for Swihart.
  19. I remember watching Tudor and Ojeda . I always thought they were capable of more I share your concerns about Miley.
  20. No Ofden there is plenty of in between for me . Just a general observation of what I perceive the tone of the board to be. Not really a very significant thing to say I guess . As for me personally, I have not always liked the decisions of management but I have always been able to live with them. How about you?
  21. I hope that simply for the sake of greatness that we are wrong but I also find it tough to believe that we will have a better man behind the plate than Vasquez. If Swihart is, let's hope we don't let another Carlton Fisk get away!
  22. I think that you are absolutely right about the patience factor (don't know if that is spelled correctly or not). We are all passionate fans and speaking just for myself I tend to want things yesterday that I can't have until tomorrow. I think it might be a New England trait. We aren't in bad shape many of us just want more I guess. I am willing to wait. We have a young team that could be special. It is nice to be told to stay grounded and to wait by someone in a I decent way. I appreciate it and I am trying to follow that advice.
  23. I agree with everyone that the offense needed to be upgraded. I am hoping that it is. Sandoval as opposed to Middlebrows is pretty clear. Ramirez as opposed to Cespedes - not so sure. We will wait and see. with respect to the rest of the offense, I think that it hinges on a lot of ifs. i want things to all work out. We shall see. Pitching staff, offense - who knows. I'm a fan so I am hoping for the best. We shall see. And honestly I don't care about what people think the rest of the teams in the east have. I truly am only concerned about one team being as good as they can be.
