I don't like it either. My point to oldtimer was that unloading 2020 underperformers like JD and Beni for whatever you can get is not necessarily smart from either a business or baseball perspective. It's not like a regular business where you can just cut loose the deadwood and replace them with better personnel for the same cost...

If the Red Sox did decide JD was cooked (which I'm sure they haven't) and went all out to unload him, in the current climate the most another team would be willing to pay of his salary might be 8 or 9 million. If the Red Sox did that, they'd be eating 13 or 14 million (in AAV) for 2 years. If JD goes back to raking, how would that rate as a baseball move?

There are a whole bunch of complicating factors in play if we're talking about Beni & JD. With Beni you pretty much have to throw 2020 out the window. And with JD, you can't really count 2020 as a season either. That's just for starters. Baseball is totally different from a typical business.

Just learned this: Because of the deferred money in his contract, Mookie's 2021-2032 AAV for tax purposes is only 25.55 million. :p

I would suggest that if they were motivated enough to make it suitably attractive for other teams it would be done by now.

I feel very much at home in Maine. Along with New Hampshire and Vermont, it feels a lot like the Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The Sox reportedly offered Mookie $300 million 3 full years after signing Price, so that doesn't make sense. If Mookie had come back with $350 million or something like that he'd probably still be with the team.

Yeah, I think Bauer is the only splash even worth considering for the Sox.

I was going to mention the early comparisons of Mookie Betts to Andrew McCutchen. I read an article in a respected baseball publication which concluded that Mookie was not going to be quite as good as McCutchen - close, but not as much power. But I refrained, because I figured someone would think I was somehow comparing Dalbec to Mookie. I'm not!

MLBTR predicts Semien getting 1 year and 14 million. That would chew up a lot of budget room.

But if the splash signing doesn't work out it can also put a damper on the team's financial ability to fill other needs. We've seen a lot of splash signings like that in the last decade.

Denny, the truth is that too many Red Sox fans are spoiled and fickle. Take the JD Martinez signing. That was a splashy signing and one that almost every Sox fan wanted to see. And DD signed him on a very reasonable contract. And he had an awesome season in 2018 and an excellent one in 2019. But how fans feel about JD now, after he had a bad stretch of 60 games in 2020? The answer is that a lot of them would love it if we could unload him and his 22 million hit to the payroll tax the next 2 years. They want the splashy signings but they bitch and moan if the player doesn't keep performing at the very highest level. Fans want it all, basically.

I shouldn't have left out Beni. And I'm not sold on Dalbec-as I said, if he's the real deal. He has potential to be a serious power hitter.

I think the following guys have real or potential star appeal: Sale (when he gets back) Eovaldi (stay healthy bro) E-Rod Houck (if he's the real deal) Bogey Devers JDM Verdugo Dalbec (if he's the real deal) If you've been reading my posts you'll have noticed I keep arguing against trading Eovaldi or Dalbec, and it's because of their star potential in my view. It is nice to watch guys who have that pizzazz thing.
