    I'm 65, and I don't complain much about players' antics. But I've really noticed a change in how baseball players act on the field. It's almost like baseball is trying to be more like football.

    Houck was the key guy in last night's game. He took the mound in the 6th with a 3-1 lead. He's been great for us, but he didn't have it last night. If he was up to his usual standard I expect he would have pitched multiple innings.

    There's way too much pimping and in-game celebrating in baseball now. A guy gets a base hit with his team getting blown out and he still has to make the big signal to the dugout. And frankly the Red Sox have been about as guilty of this as any team. In 2018 guys were doing a little shimmy dance for the dugout when they got a hit. Mookie came up with that sprinkle thing he does.

    I wouldn't say weird. They may have re-evaluated as they went along and decided to use him more like a regular high leverage bullpen guy. He ended up at 73 innings. Seems about right. And he has looked sharp in the postseason. Wouldn't you say they may have handled him just right?

    Seems like a few rumor-loving fools, including me, seized onto the words "stretched out", taking them to mean he was going to be starting this year. Actually, I think it might have been poster Nick who was leading the crusade on that one, wondering when the hell he was going to be having longer outings.

    Somehow it doesn't seem like an ideal playoff setup when the top 2 teams in wins meet in a first round short series.

    Bad comparison. If you said Papi made half as much as Price did in 2016, Papi's last year and Price's first with us, that would be a fair comparison.

    They overpaid for Price because they had such a desperate need for a #1 starter at the time.

    The Red Sox already said the plan was for Whitlock to become a starter, so I do expect to see that next year.

    Right. Instinctively it seems to make sense to put one in the rotation and one in the pen.

    Max, the Dodgers are freaking stacked. They sign Bauer for huge money, lose him because of his off-field crimes, and then they trade for Scherzer and Trea Turner. The Giants had no real advantage playing a team that loaded with high-priced, elite talent.

    You're misinterpreting what those values represent, but you have lots of company, because most people do. Those values are an empirical calculation of the average cost of free agent players per 1 WAR. I'm not sure what sort of time window they use, but the average cost per 1 WAR is recalculated every year. Last I looked the average cost was about $8 million per 1 WAR.

    If I was a Giants fan, I'd be more apt to think it a tad unfair that the reward for winning 107 games and the division was to play a best 3 of 5 against a team that won 106 and had a run differential of +269 in the first round.

    It's going to be interesting to see how they handle Houck and Whitlock, that's for sure. Planning on both being in the rotation does seem risky. Unfortunately it brings back memories of the 2012 plan of moving both Bard and Aceves into the rotation. I'd certainly settle for a 50/50 split.

    That Tigers team was better than their record. Run differential of +172 for a 99-63 Pythagorean. Verlander and Scherzer. They were a tough opponent.

    It's easy to get a SP'er signing right? Not so sure about that. I think Bloom will do well assembling pens without big spending.

    "Include Betts" sounds funny. We also had to eat half the money. Price hasn't looked like much this year, so it certainly seems like the right move. In total trading Price will save the team $30 million of AAV over 2 years. He opted out of 2020.

    We beat some good teams in the 2013 postseason though.
