    OTOH Betts has missed a lot of games this year with an assortment of minor injuries. To answer your question I don't think it looks any better or worse. Betts is still a great player and 12 years is still a hell of a long time. Trout missing most of the season is another reminder of the crazy amount of risk in this deals. (All of which has more to do with the extension than the trade.)

    Meh. Devers has an OPS of .725 since August 18. Talksox wisdom says that means he should be on the bench.

    The much maligned JD Martinez is the best hitter on the team, career-wise. Career OPS/OPS+ JD 882/134 Devers 843/119 And Bogaerts is the best hitter on the team this year.

    It might also be worth noting that coming into this season, Vaz had played in 476 MLB games. moon, haven't you determined that it took several years before Varitek became a 'good CERA guy'?

    The numbers say one of two things: 1) Plawecki certainly does better with some starters, but Vaz does much much better with the relievers. 2) Screaming randomness.

    Yeah, but forget about the comparison and just look at the numbers for Whitlock and Houck when they throw to Vaz. They're crazy good.

    I am at the point in the season where I will say nothing whatsoever of a predictive nature about the Sox or any other team. Play the games and see what happens. The only thing I will say is that I love how this team is managed by Bloom and Cora.

    Here are some CERA/COPS numbers to chew on. Not big samples, obviously, but still. Whitlock Vazquez 62.2 IP 1.58 ERA .590 OPS Plawecki 9.2 IP 4.66 ERA .909 OPS Houck Vazquez 49.1 IP 1.82 ERA .556 OPS Plawecki 28 IP 4.82 ERA .679 OPS Whitlock and Houck are pretty key guys for 2022. Are we sure we don't want Vaz catching them?

    My main point about Vazquez is that the Red Sox obviously have invested a lot of faith in his catching skills over the last 5 years or so. Which means the CERA numbers don't influence them much. Cora has been playing him "too much" this year, if anything.

    And if you sit JDM down, exactly how is he going to get his hitting stroke back? If fans ran the team, Dalbec would have been jettisoned back when his OPS was .600.

    Nonsense. The Sox have handled Dalbec beautifully this year. The bellyaching is unbelievable.
