  1. I don't know, the fact that E Rod signed so quick might just mean the Tigers' offer was too good to resist. $77 mill and an opt-out after 2 years was a pretty sweet offer. Especially with all the so-called uncertainty with the new CBA etc. Maybe E-Rod's agent said 'I suggest you jump all over this, my friend!', and E-Rod had to agree.
  2. All I can say is about E-Rod's deal is that it seems to be a good sign for the financial health of the game.
  3. My concern about putting both these guys in the Opening Day rotation is that it's a little risky to do it with two guys at once.
  4. MLBTR projected $27/3.
  5. No. In 2019 they returned virtually the same team that won 108 and the WS. The only loss was Kimbrel. If you call that a semi-cliff year I really have no idea what your definition of a cliff is.
  6. I think you've got it. It was a "clip" or a "bliff".
  7. I love that avatar BTW.
  8. I'm torn between two equally wishy-washy answers: 1) Apparently so. 2) We'll find out over the next 5 years.
  9. To me the bad periods are measured by how many years in a row you miss the playoffs. Since 2003 here are the years we've missed: 2010-2012 3 2014-2015 2 2019-2020 2
  10. To be fair, Pearce did have an .890 OPS in the 2018 regular season, including .959 against lefties.
  11. a) 2020 was a 60 game season in a pandemic, and the perfect time to tank. I've said a number of times I think Henry nailed it replacing DD with Bloom when he did.
  12. And they were right?
  13. oldtimer, our whole team failed to hit the last 3 games against Houston.
  14. That would probably work for me. But Scherzer/Semien = about 60 million AAV.
  15. All you can really do is compare to other teams. In the twenty-first century, which team do you think has done the best? Red Sox Yankees Dodgers Giants I'll take the Red Sox record over the others. 4 rings, 7 ALCS appearances, other playoff appearances. And yes, 4 last-place finishes. The Yankees and Dodgers have been much more consistent, but I'll take the rings.
  16. It should probably also be noted that Hanley's contract carried that nasty vesting option which, if triggered, would have cost the team another $22 mill. DD and the team had to release him -- under false pretenses, some said.
  17. In that same game, BTW, the Jays bullpen was credited with a win, 3 holds and a save. Starter Ryu, who pitched 3.2 scoreless, got nothing of course.
  18. Team wins-of indisputable importance Pitcher wins-of questionable importance My favorite win of the year goes to Tim Mayza of the Blue Jays, April 25, in a 1-0 win against the Rays. Mayza pitched 1/3 of an inning, the 4th no less, before giving up 2 hits to start the 5th and being yanked. But because the Jays scored in the 5th when he was the 'pitcher of record', Mayza got the win.
  19. Dead money inherited by DD-not including Castillo who was not subject to luxury tax: Pablo Hanley Pedroia Dead money inherited by Bloom: Price (half-dead, at least) Pedroia
  20. I don't think we're a hive mind here. Some people do unfairly leave those things out, I agree. Personally, I think of 2013 as Ben's real first season. As for Bloom, I'm definitely a fan of what he's done.
  21. If you believe that a pitcher's W-L record matters, E-Rod has to be your guy. He's 64-39. That's a .621 winning pct., which equates to a 101-61 season record.
  22. Oasis reference?
  23. LOL "In the year 2525, in man is still alive, if woman can survive..." (Zager and Evans song)
  24. To be completely fair about this, you have to take into consideration how much of that 2019 payroll DD had nothing to do with taking on. Porcello 20.6 Betts 20 Pablo 19 Pedroia 14 Xander 12 JBJ 8.5 That's 94 mill. And doesn't include the 12 for Castillo which wasn't included in tax calcs, but did come out of JH's pocket. The amounts for Betts and Bogaerts reflect their huge arb raises. Which they deserved, obviously, but it's one of the vagaries of the system that guys get huge raises without the GM having a thing to say about it.
  25. I agree. But when it comes to the payroll, it's simply false that "Ben couldn't spend" while "DD had a blank cheque".
