That's what some fans want, sure. But of course if you break the bank on a guy and he doesn't meet expectations, they're furious. Of course a fairly high % of fans are just miserable pricks who want everything their way.

Screw them. Ex-Yankee Eovaldi did some very good things for us, and did some of them against the Yankees. Whitlock and Refsnyder are former Yankee properties who have done well for us so far too.

Why not? Keep in mind that for the first 5 years of the deal, San Diego paid Hosmer $21 mill but were only assessed $18 mill AAV. The Fangraphs article explains the change in rules, and common sense says no way Bloom makes the trade otherwise.

I'm pronouncing you the winner, based on the Fangraphs article I linked. As I said, there's no way Bloom would have made the deal knowing he was taking a $5.7 million bump to payroll for tax purposes. If someone looks at Cot's or Spotrac, it does look like a $5.7 mill hit, so it's quite a source of confusion for anyone who actually looks at these things.

I found the answer on Hosmer. There was a change in the new CBA. The Sox AAV hit is indeed only the $720 K. No way Bloom would have made the trade if it caused tax issues. The comments at the end of this are interesting. If Nick is right, it would seem to be an egregious blunder by the Sox, because Hosmer would represent $5.72 mill AAV against their tax payroll for 2023. That would be crazy.

But it was 8/144 or 18 mill AAV, so it should be 17.28 mill, I think.

Yep. Riley's contract bought out his 3 arb years. The offer to Devers was with 2 arb years left - now 1 left. In theory Riley's deal should be a good comp for Devers.

I don't think San Diego's tax AAV is reduced except by the league minimum amount being paid by Boston. But the info about this in Cot's and Spotrac is either missing or hopelessly confusing.

Bob Hamelin is also the man who heavily scouted Whitlock and advised the Sox to take him in the Rule 5 draft.
