  1. Pretty simple. Breslow wanted to sign Giolito, but he couldn't do that, keep Sale and make his other desired moves and stay within the budget he was given.
  2. With Bello and Pivetta now looking like crap, we're down to Houck and Crawford as reliable starters. And those two are getting into uncharted territory innings-wise. They're already trying to get Houck a bit more rest.
  3. Randy, that's all I can come up with too. It was all about that precious $10 million.
  4. And how exactly does Grissom fit into a 2025 infield that has Story, Mayer and a number of other candidates? This trade makes less sense the more you think about it.
  5. Baseball Digest and The Sporting News were both awesome.
  6. Here's a simple way to express why trading Sale was not a good idea: You don't trade off starting pitching unless you have a major surplus of it. The Red Sox clearly did not have a major surplus of it.
  7. Not just unfair math, but wrong math. The average of 93+93+84 is 90. Which is the same number of wins the 2023 World Series champs had, BTW, and more than the 2021 champs, so it's not really a bad number. Meanwhile, throwing out the 108 season as an "outlier" is ludicrous. We're talking about 1 of a population of 4. Shall we throw out 2013 from Cherington's resume while we're at it? You're abusing math and logic.
  8. "Snuck the Bogaerts thing in"? I'm not even sure what you're talking about. I think it's pretty sad that you're trying to discredit what was a pretty good run. And 2021 wasn't bad either, with a lot of holdovers from 2019.
  9. Of course I never said anything about "proof" or "dazzle". Seems like all you have is straw man arguments. What seems clear to me is that past injuries do not necessarily predict future injuries. The Dodgers traded for and extended Tyler Glasnow, who pitched fewer innings than Sale from 2019-2023. We still have hope for Trevor Story. And so on.
  10. "Falling in the standings" - sure, let's make it sound more dramatic than it really was. It was one bad season, no more, no less. And not as bad as some other Red Sox seasons Henry has been witnessing. DD had inked Bogaerts to an extension through 2022, so that's wrong too.
  11. We've already gone over the fact that his fWAR was good when he pitched. 2019-2023 298.33 IP 6.7 fWAR Saying he didn't "show anything" since 2018 only clinches that you're not interested in being fair about it.
  12. None of that alters the fact that it was only one disappointing season. Plus you're chucking stuff in there that wasn't even known at the time, like how Price and Sale were going to perform in the future. Betts wasn't a free agent until after 2020, and nobody knew exactly how interested the Dodgers were in him until we traded him. So you're not really arguing in good faith.
  13. If Henry soured on DD because of one disappointing season out of 4, that would make him the most mercurial owner in history next to maybe George Steinbrenner at his worst.
  14. I think your hypothetical has to include Giolito getting injured. Besides, they would have seen in spring that Houck had taken a giant leap forward.
  15. Atlanta gave Sale a 2 year deal for $38 million, plus they have a club option for a third year at $18 million. The Red Sox are paying $17 million of the guaranteed $38 million. Thus Atlanta has control over Sale for 3 years but are only actually on the hook for $21 million.
  16. fWAR's at the season's halfway point: Sale 3.0 Grissom -0.9
  17. Eovaldi's 2018 salary was $2 million.
  18. Romy Gonzalez, AKA Senor Clutch.
  19. Sorry, I made you do that work for nothing. I was asking moon for examples of deadline trades that involved "getting good talent without giving up better prospects by taking on bloated contracts."
  20. Any past examples?
  21. I didn't know the teams had that much say in it.
  22. The OPS has been going up. He has pop and he has speed.
  23. In recent years it rarely gets out of my thoughts.
  24. And the next time someone uses the now hackneyed line "I'll drive him to the airport myself" they should be suspended for a week.
  25. Now if you find a spell check that actually works we'll be all set...
