The system is designed to keep salaries down until the players hit free agency. With a guy like Jansen, I think the Sox paid a premium not so much for his longevity, but for his consistent and reliable results over the years. Some guys are much more "money in the bank" than others.

Yes, their approach to the rotation this offseason, including trading Sale, was very mid-market, and I don't object to the "pretentious" part either.

Edwin Diaz is now the standard-setter for closer contracts - 5 years, $102 million. In my view it's fair that the highest-paid closers make about half as much as the highest-paid starters. They only pitch about 1/3 the innings, but the innings are much higher leverage on average, so that justifies the bump to 50%.

Yes, he was paid the bonus up front, but up front bonuses and deferrals are all factored into the Average Annual Value of 30.4 million (or 365/12), which is clearly the fairest measure of what he is actually making. If we only use what the player is actually being paid, Ohtani is only making 2 million for 2024. But his AAV is 46 million because of the deferred money. Also, to get really technical, in 2020 players only received 40% of their salary because of COVID, so that year Betts would have been paid about 11 million instead of 27 million.

And it's pretty incredible that with Giolito getting injured and no additions whatsoever outside of one nice dumpster dive in Criswell, we're doing as well as we are. It could all go sideways in a hurry if Houck and Crawford wear down.

Nice to see our old friend Iggy off to an amazin' start with the Mets. Not sure why he was on the MLB sidelines so long. Bloom should have signed him last year to play SS.

My position has never been about counting on Sale. It was about not throwing away the possibility of him doing what he's doing. Especially not when your only other move is signing Giolito.

I don't think anyone hated the Kluber signing. The real problem was that it was the only signing. Sale had a 2.1 fWAR in 102 IP last year - not spectacular but about 50% better than average. And he struck out 11 per 9 innings. As far as still showing the signs of being able to pitch well, that's exactly what he did whenever he was healthy through these injury-plagued years.

Pretty sure JH leaves the deadline decisions up to his CBO. The deadline decisions/indecision are a big reason why Bloom is no longer here.

Hopefully you're joking with this wacky comparison. But if you're not, all you're showing is that the Red Sox got an incredible bargain because of how the payroll system works in MLB. Also, that bonus has to be pro-rated over the contract. Betts's AAV is 30.4 million. Wacky!

It's the same problem that's been going on since Bloom was hired. They refuse to sign starting pitchers other than dumpster dives/reclamation projects.

And my opinion is that because their intentions were obviously not to spend much on the rotation-again-it makes their intentions in trading Sale more questionable.

You're right, but I think it's fair to question their overall approach in assembling the 2024 rotation, and these moves are part of that. They didn't do anything about replacing Giolito, so in effect they decided we would get by with the same rotation as last year, minus Sale. That seems like a recipe for disaster. The disaster has been postponed so far by the performances and health of Houck and Crawford holding up.

All those guys Bloom signed were dumpster dives. They don't really have much to do with Sale, who was a sunk cost and has to be evaluated as such. Giolito was yet another dumpster dive, or project, considering how badly he pitched the last two months. The issue is that they only signed Giolito, and when he got injured they didn't do anything to replace him. Now we have to pray Houck and Crawford hold up as they pitch more innings than they ever have. Winckowski might step up, we can hope so.

Let's not get carried away. In 2018 we got Eovaldi and Pearce. In 2021 we got Schwarber. All very useful.

I don't think the Braves believed that him having a good season was ridiculously improbable, but I'm sure he's exceeding their expectations.
