  1. Poor Stanley had a role in both the 1978 playoff game and 1986 Game 6.
  2. "Actual difference" - not buying it. I mean, I'd gladly leave the Jackson home run in and take the Dent home run out.
  3. I don't know if baseball is worse now, as Red claims. But there have definitely been some impactful changes. One of which is the expansion of the playoffs that gives so many more teams a chance. Another is all the analytical stuff going on behind the scenes that affect player performances.
  4. Breslow seems much more feckful.
  5. In any case, sweeping the Rays in their own park was most unexpected and definitely lifts the spirits a bit.
  6. And absolutely no one in their right mind saw the starting pitching being this good. It's still kind of hard to believe, after only signing Giolito who was promptly gone for the season. B & B have pulled off a minor miracle.
  7. Yeah, this is a team that will really make you bipolar. I think it's because on paper it's such a patchwork team with so many unproven quantities. When guys like Duran and Abreu and Wong are stepping up and playing like stars it obviously makes a huge difference.
  8. I don't think 2 years can really be considered long term. If 2 years is long term, that would mean the Red Sox traded Sale when they still had control over him long term. 3 years is the minimum IMHO.
  9. It was both of the f***ers LOL. But yeah, the importance of Piniella's contributions would only be recognized by those who really pay attention.
  10. Meanwhile, the 2024 Red Sox have an ERA+ of 141, best in the majors. That's some pretty amazing work by the Breslow & Bailey Circus.
  11. This team is showing some good resiliency. I think my man Cora has something to do with that.
  12. Yeah, probably so. I have to get over my grudge about this trade. A lot of it is just cathartic stuff, getting frustration out.
  13. Yes, it's a trade you make when you're punting. I was hoping we weren't punting this year, so that has a big impact on my attitude toward the trade.
  14. Grissom still has just one extra base hit, and now has 13 K's and 1 walk.
  15. My basic position is that it was a needless trade. Sale's payroll cost was no longer a significant issue, and we really didn't need another middle infield prospect that much.
  16. I was unhappy that he was injured so much. I think that's different from being "unhappy with Sale".
  17. Of course no one was talking extension. I don't know why you keep repeating that. The Sox already had an option on him for 2025, and obviously with a guy of his age and injury history you're going to proceed with caution.
  18. You have to feel bad for Whitlock. He's reportedly been working his ass off, but the arm just won't cooperate.
  19. "Not really" says the aforementioned Jeter Downs.
  20. And they had other options to improve the offense with something a little more proven than Grissom.
  21. You're saying that at the end of December, with a ton of unsigned free agents still out there, we had already all given up on 2024? What you're saying is it was a punt move. I think that's exactly what worried me about it at the time, and why I really hate it now.
  22. You can say the same about Houck and Crawford.
  23. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole purpose of stats like WAR is to eliminate all the luck and randomness stuff you're trying to apply here. "All else being equal", Sale's 2 WAR performance would obviously have made us a better team to this point. Whether it would have added exactly 2 wins we don't know. Might have been 3, might have been 1, because of the randomness of the game.
  24. The thing about Grissom is, he's a PROSPECT. Sure he has great-looking minor league numbers. So does Dalbec. Grissom's 80 MLB PA's in 2023 were nothing special. 280/313/347 In neither 2023 or 2024 has he hit any home runs, and he has taken very few walks. We got ourselves another prospect and no more.
  25. So you're going with a randomness argument. That's like going through all Devers's home runs and picking which ones contributed to actual wins and saying they're the only ones that were productive at-bats.
