I thought we established the Braves are "babying" all their starters. If Sale pitches 3 innings tonight he'll be T1 in starts and leading in IP.

I'm not drawing conclusions, I'm just jabbering like I always do. I tend to get obsessed about some things. This year it's the Sale-Grissom trade. Some of it is pushing back against this being a slam-dunk great trade for the Sox. I've been on Sons of Sam Horn a lot lately and a lot of those folks were absolutely thrilled by it. And Grissom's limited MLB numbers were used as evidence that the guy has already proven he can rake at the MLB level. When I dug deeper into the numbers I was not so impressed.

I would counter that talking about how to make the team better is equally "what if" and equally pointless, because they're gonna do what they're gonna do, as always. Almost all of our talk here is totally pointless. Except that we seem to enjoy it for some reason.

220 consecutive MLB PA's without a home run, and only a handful of EBH's. If that doesn't raise any concerns about his power, fine. Even in 2022 his hard hit % and exit velocity were way below average.

OK, I can see the rationale for why the trade for Sale made sense for the Braves. It still doesn't convince me that the Red Sox lack of depth made it a good move to trade Sale. Their lack of depth has a lot to do with their reluctance to sign starters.

Give us the list of names that make up this great starting pitching depth for the Braves.

Sure, that makes sense. But notin's theory that the Braves were able to utilize Sale and allow for the possibility of him getting injured better than us does not. If Sale gets hurt it's going to be a blow to them just like it would be with us. They have Fried, Lopez and Morton. We have Houck, Crawford and Bello. Plus we obviously could have signed another starter.

Right, but he exhibited no power last year either, and no power in his last 15 games in 2022.

The latter, presumably. And we don't know how much difference any of it makes. Maybe if Atlanta was pitching these guys on fewer days rest they'd have a better record. Don't you normally want to use your best as much as possible? They're not 5 deep in aces. Maybe what they're doing is stupid. It's all a matter of opinion.

So Grissom's 2024 xOBA per Savant is .271 and his xSLG is .317. His Savant numbers seem to confirm he's been both unlucky and not very good.

Well, they're "accomodating" Max Fried exactly the same. The fact that Atlanta is using a different approach doesn't mean Sale or Fried wouldn't be able to handle Boston's approach. Full marks for effort, though.

As fate would have it, he's pitching tonight on 4 days rest. He also pitched May 1 on 4 days rest.

Atlanta's schedule has somehow allowed all of their starters to have extra rest days. If Sale pitches 3 innings tonight he will lead their rotation in innings. He hasn't been treated differently from their other starters.

I look mainly at FanGraphs. That's advanced enough for me. And I see a -0.9 fWAR. And I believe the luck stuff is factored into that.

I don't think many have said to DFA Grissom. Just that his chances of contributing in 2024 seem slim at this point. A .367 OPS and a recurring hamstring injury do tend to make you fall out of favor.

Or like Sale he needs a change of injury luck.

There's also a reasonable chance Grissom will stink again if they plug him back in. In the meantime, we might as well all keep guessing our asses off.

There have been a fair number of Grissom Pollies too. "Yeah, the injury and the flu set him back...he's been hitting the ball, just unlucky...only a matter of time before he starts raking!"

The overall results have been excellent, that's indisputable.

The problem with Grissom is that we're now at the stage that every game matters and they don't really have the luxury of trying to ease him back in. The only thing that would create an opening for him is injuries. The guys we have for second now are not stars, but they've been contributing.

That feels like a pretty large heap of ifs right now. Grissom has 2 IL stints and a -0.9 fWAR in the time he played. Not sure many would rather see him than Hamilton.
