    There was nothing wrong with the Price signing. He looked like a rock solid choice at the time. We won 3 division titles and a World Series in his first 3 seasons with us. What happened after that was basically the cost of doing business. IMHO.

    In 1966, the last year before the ID season, they averaged about 10,000 a game, 8th out of 10 AL teams. 1967 famously revived the franchise.

    Which also explains some of the "nutty other teams" thing. Part of the reason more teams are spending more is because they're wealthier.

    What's missing from your numbers is comparisons of annual payroll to annual revenue and franchise market value. If payroll is staying the same while the others are rising, that's effectively cutting payroll. The payroll for 2024 is roughly the same as it was for 2010-2011. The franchise value has at least doubled since then.

    Prior to this year nobody wanted to see Ref against a righty. He's been great against righties this year, but some of that has to be the BABIP luck thing. Ref has an absurd BABIP of .424 overall, .405 vs. RHP and .458 vs. LHP.

    It's the combination of the owners and the front office, a combination of reducing the payroll, shifting emphasis from the present to the future, and just downright disastrous moves (like Story and Yoshida). I've been saying for a while now they have succeeded in lowering our expectations.

    I never ever actively hope for the Sox to lose a game. But after the fact I'm finding that losses don't bother me much this year. Because I'm pissed at Henry, yes, and I don't really want to see his Tampa Bay North dream succeed.

    A sub 3 ERA is a pretty tough standard. He was comfortably under 4 the last 3 years.

    He was pretty damn good for 3 full years, 2021 to 2023. The Sox reportedly were not big fans of his stuff. It does seem like they were right to pass on him. Not sure if it wasn't just because they were being cheap, though, because they passed on a whole lot of guys.
