  1. They're 4 games back of the division lead in the loss column. Much larger deficits have been overcome in much less time. The big thing is all their pitchers coming back. Plus I think Bochy is a phenomenal manager. Just something to watch.
  2. Baseball has gone through the looking glass, Hugh. Arizona made the World Series last year with 84 wins and a -15 differential. Texas is poised for a run.
  3. What the hell, now that I've given it some thought, I'll say that Texas is still in the mix this year big time. Pretty soon their rotation options will include: deGrom Scherzer Eovaldi Lorenzen Mahle Gray Heaney And like the Red Sox, they have an elite manager.
  4. Sounds like a bet to me.
  5. But they have a team/vesting option on him for 2025. Texas probably feels like they're still in the window. deGrom will be back soon too. I don't think Eovaldi is going anywhere.
  6. I wouldn't assume Texas is in sell mode. They're 5 games out in the division, they've won 7 of 9, Scherzer is back etc.
  7. And the .291 BABIPPER.
  8. Sometimes it's better to be understated.
  9. Eovaldi's contract has a vesting option for 2025 that kicks in if he pitches 300 innings in 2023-2024. He's on target to get there if he can stay out of the shop.
  10. Don't know the answer to the first two questions. Slaten's injury sounds very ominous. I think the idea of trading Jansen for a starter is fine for academic debate, but has little connection to realistic possibilities.
  11. With Martin and Slaten on the IL, I'm not seeing the bullpen as clearly in better shape than the rotation.
  12. The main point is that if the Red Sox want to make a playoff run, they need help in both the rotation and the bullpen. Trading Jansen for a starter would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.
  13. That's at least the second time I've effed up his name.
  14. I think we may have been over this before LOL Ask Theo Epstein or Chris Young - they're the ones who gave up a lot for Chapman. I think they have pretty good baseball minds.
  15. Well yeah, but the IP tend to be critical ones, and that's exactly why closers have landed such big returns at the deadline.
  16. They need help in both areas.
  17. They might need another reliever now just as much, with Smith and Slaten on the IL.
  18. Yes, but you would need some kind of crystal ball to project 2023 Ragans's numbers with the Rangers, where he'd been moved to the bullpen, to his numbers with the Royals - and it happened almost literally overnight. Normally in a deal like this you don't get such immediate help in return.
  19. It's no simple question or answer. In hindsight the trade of Ragans for Chapman was sheer madness on the part of the Rangers. But Ragans's numbers with the Rangers were not good, and I have to assume their internal evaluation of him had slipped for some reason. The 2023 Royals had no shot at the playoffs, so this isn't a parallel situation with trading Jansen. My answer would be no for 2 reasons: 1) trading Jansen would infuriate Red Sox players and fans alike for good reason; 2) it's extremely unlikely the next Ragans is out there - we might not see such a lopsided deadline trade for a long time.
  20. I strongly dispute that Price and Sale were "stupid acquisitions". I think they were acquisitions that were absolutely necessary at the time - assuming that the Red Sox were actually interested in things like, you know, winning games, making the playoffs, winning the World Series. Henry obviously believes there is a better way than throwing piles of money at starting pitchers. I understand that, but we have yet to see if the new approach will actually pay off.
  21. MADSTORK is the board's resident troll. He's so much of a troll that he won't even disclose who his team is.
  22. How quickly the value of player assets can depreciate-or appreciate. If Montgomery returned from the IL and pitched 2 good games in a row, his value would shoot right back up.
  23. But Sale's recent history when he signed the extension after 2018 was clearly concerning. He pitched 158 innings in 2018 compared to 214 the year before and was on and off the IL, and not really himself in the 2018 postseason. I think you nailed it when you said DD likely expected Sale to only pitch 4 out of the 5 years in the extension, and this was reflected in the pricing.
  24. Some of it can be chalked up to luck. But the failure to do anything about replacing Giolito can only be chalked up to the same penny-pinching approach we've seen since Bloom was hired.
  25. Nothing that Grissom says pisses me off. What pisses me off is that we let go of a pitcher that might have helped the 2024 team, and we did very little else to upgrade the rotation, and I think all that is going to end up costing the 2024 team's chances. It's as simple as that. My issue with acquiring Grissom is that it turns out he was no more than an "OK prospect", as mvp put it. Him being only an OK prospect really makes the rationale behind this move questionable.
