  1. Romy has of course played VASTLY better than Grissom...
  2. Henry generously donated Lester to the Cubs to help them break a 108-year title drought, and he donated Betts to the Dodgers to help them break a 32-year drought.
  3. Valdez hasn't played the last 2 games. But as we've been talking about here lately, Cora uses everybody, and Valdez was pretty hot with the bat for a while, and Hamilton was slumping. Hamilton, however, has been by far the better player over Valdez this year.
  4. The signing of Giolito was actually announced the day before the Sale trade was announced. Looks like they were probably both in the works at the same time.
  5. Grissom was about half a win below replacement level in 2023 by both fWAR and bWAR. Doesn't really sound like a guy you expect to plug and play.
  6. And Grissom absolutely stunk in all areas in his limited MLB time in 2023.
  7. I'm not sure what it is you don't get. The theory is pretty simple: -Henry's role in this was limited to giving Breslow the budget. The budget was low throttle. -Breslow wanted to sign Giolito and make some other acquisitions. -He didn't have enough room in the budget to sign Giolito and make those other acquisitions without cutting payroll somewhere else. -Trading Sale cut 10 million. All very simple stuff.
  8. Read somewhere that Bello threw some four-seamers last night for the first time in a number of games. They're working with him on his pitch mix.
  9. Understandable. He has to prove it.
  10. I have a gut feeling that Bello is going to be okay because I think he's in good hands.
  11. Plus there's a new report about how wondrously deep in middle infield prospects the Sox are. Seems like if the Sox had a need at second base this year, a stopgap would have made more sense than another prospect like Grissom. But the stopgap might have cost a few bucks, so it's that damn budget again.
  12. Bill is sounding kind of bitter these days. He made a crack in spring training about the Red Sox roster, saying they only needed to upgrade about 18-19 spots or something like that.
  13. Yep. Of course it's my theory that JH's low throttle budget had a lot to do with Breslow trading Sale. Nobody gets a pass for this. Breslow may still end up looking good in spite of it.
  14. Well, the impact of DD's guys should be here quite a long time. Bello Casas Crawford Duran Houck Rafaela
  15. fWAR went from 3.0 to 3.3.
  16. Last night was a good night for these extensions.
  17. I'm not really clear what these "large-scale issues" Bill is referring to are supposed to be.
  18. The system is designed to keep salaries down until the players hit free agency. With a guy like Jansen, I think the Sox paid a premium not so much for his longevity, but for his consistent and reliable results over the years. Some guys are much more "money in the bank" than others.
  19. Yes, their approach to the rotation this offseason, including trading Sale, was very mid-market, and I don't object to the "pretentious" part either.
  20. Wow, she's pretty good...
  21. Edwin Diaz is now the standard-setter for closer contracts - 5 years, $102 million. In my view it's fair that the highest-paid closers make about half as much as the highest-paid starters. They only pitch about 1/3 the innings, but the innings are much higher leverage on average, so that justifies the bump to 50%.
  22. Yes, he was paid the bonus up front, but up front bonuses and deferrals are all factored into the Average Annual Value of 30.4 million (or 365/12), which is clearly the fairest measure of what he is actually making. If we only use what the player is actually being paid, Ohtani is only making 2 million for 2024. But his AAV is 46 million because of the deferred money. Also, to get really technical, in 2020 players only received 40% of their salary because of COVID, so that year Betts would have been paid about 11 million instead of 27 million.
  23. If you like ERA, Winckowski's is a glittering 2.80.
  24. And it's pretty incredible that with Giolito getting injured and no additions whatsoever outside of one nice dumpster dive in Criswell, we're doing as well as we are. It could all go sideways in a hurry if Houck and Crawford wear down.
  25. I totally respect the accountability.
