  1. We were all foolish on that point.
  2. Nice to see our old friend Iggy off to an amazin' start with the Mets. Not sure why he was on the MLB sidelines so long. Bloom should have signed him last year to play SS.
  3. My position has never been about counting on Sale. It was about not throwing away the possibility of him doing what he's doing. Especially not when your only other move is signing Giolito.
  4. I don't think anyone hated the Kluber signing. The real problem was that it was the only signing. Sale had a 2.1 fWAR in 102 IP last year - not spectacular but about 50% better than average. And he struck out 11 per 9 innings. As far as still showing the signs of being able to pitch well, that's exactly what he did whenever he was healthy through these injury-plagued years.
  5. Yeah, no idea where moon got that from.
  6. Who has ranked the Sox in the back 10?
  7. Very confused and confusing response LOL
  8. Pretty sure JH leaves the deadline decisions up to his CBO. The deadline decisions/indecision are a big reason why Bloom is no longer here.
  9. You only thought it made sense because you thought Sale was done.
  10. Hopefully you're joking with this wacky comparison. But if you're not, all you're showing is that the Red Sox got an incredible bargain because of how the payroll system works in MLB. Also, that bonus has to be pro-rated over the contract. Betts's AAV is 30.4 million. Wacky!
  11. It's the same problem that's been going on since Bloom was hired. They refuse to sign starting pitchers other than dumpster dives/reclamation projects.
  12. I'm giving credit to the Braves for thinking that he wasn't.
  13. And my opinion is that because their intentions were obviously not to spend much on the rotation-again-it makes their intentions in trading Sale more questionable.
  14. You're right, but I think it's fair to question their overall approach in assembling the 2024 rotation, and these moves are part of that. They didn't do anything about replacing Giolito, so in effect they decided we would get by with the same rotation as last year, minus Sale. That seems like a recipe for disaster. The disaster has been postponed so far by the performances and health of Houck and Crawford holding up.
  15. All those guys Bloom signed were dumpster dives. They don't really have much to do with Sale, who was a sunk cost and has to be evaluated as such. Giolito was yet another dumpster dive, or project, considering how badly he pitched the last two months. The issue is that they only signed Giolito, and when he got injured they didn't do anything to replace him. Now we have to pray Houck and Crawford hold up as they pitch more innings than they ever have. Winckowski might step up, we can hope so.
  16. Let's not get carried away. In 2018 we got Eovaldi and Pearce. In 2021 we got Schwarber. All very useful.
  17. I don't think the Braves believed that him having a good season was ridiculously improbable, but I'm sure he's exceeding their expectations.
  18. I would love to know what some of the front office conversations about this were like. I'm guessing someone raised the possibility of Sale doing exactly what he's doing, and is quietly in "told you so" mode these days...
  19. You're combining two deals into one.
  20. Yes I did. I also thought at the time full throttle was a real thing, that the hype about Grissom was well founded, and that there were some big moves yet to come. If I knew at the time the sum total of starter acquisitions would be Giolito, my opinion of this move would have been much different, I believe.
  21. Actually when I look back at the first part of this thread moon was the one raising the most doubts about this trade. Largely because he was very dubious they would spend the $10 million they saved.
  22. I said little about this trade at the time because I was waiting to see what other moves were coming. I assumed this meant we would making some significant additions to the rotation. They did tell us they would be. I never dreamed it would only be Giolito. And I said if they signed Giolito I would puke.
  23. I was ambivalent about trading Price. But I was too much in shock about trading Betts to devote much of my attention to the Price part, honestly. One thing I'll always remember is that Kimmi, who hates bloated contracts more than anyone, didn't understand trading Price. Why? Because we needed the pitching. My guess is she didn't like the Sale trade much either, for the same reason.
  24. And the Giolito contract only gave the Red Sox one year of control over him. 2025 was a player option (which of course he will exercise now). Which led to early speculation they might trade him at the 2024 deadline if he was doing well. That's how our Red Sox operate these days.
  25. To me the Johnny Obvious approach to Sale was to keep him and hope for the best. I firmly believe that's what a typical big market team would do in any case like this. The Red Sox seem determined to show they're the filthy rich guys that are gonna do things differently. And it keeps blowing up on them.
