Eh, they could have spent plenty more. The 3rd wealthiest team is not in the top 10 payrolls 2 years in a row. I have never argued they should have placed heavy reliance on Sale, just that they shouldn't have tossed the opportunity like they did, for the sake of $10 mill and an OK prospect.

Gil is pitching well again. If the Yankees make a move for a closer that could give them a boost. I'm enjoying their struggles but not counting them dead. They came very close to sweeping the O's.

I wouldn't be saying this except they just got Scherzer back and will soon be adding deGrom and Mahle. These are some serious potential pitching upgrades.

For me complaining about the Sale trade is not complaining about Breslow, it's complaining about Henry's tight-fistedness, because I think it was the payroll budget that induced this trade.

They're 4 games back of the division lead in the loss column. Much larger deficits have been overcome in much less time. The big thing is all their pitchers coming back. Plus I think Bochy is a phenomenal manager. Just something to watch.

Baseball has gone through the looking glass, Hugh. Arizona made the World Series last year with 84 wins and a -15 differential. Texas is poised for a run.

What the hell, now that I've given it some thought, I'll say that Texas is still in the mix this year big time. Pretty soon their rotation options will include: deGrom Scherzer Eovaldi Lorenzen Mahle Gray Heaney And like the Red Sox, they have an elite manager.

But they have a team/vesting option on him for 2025. Texas probably feels like they're still in the window. deGrom will be back soon too. I don't think Eovaldi is going anywhere.

I wouldn't assume Texas is in sell mode. They're 5 games out in the division, they've won 7 of 9, Scherzer is back etc.

Sometimes it's better to be understated.

Eovaldi's contract has a vesting option for 2025 that kicks in if he pitches 300 innings in 2023-2024. He's on target to get there if he can stay out of the shop.

Don't know the answer to the first two questions. Slaten's injury sounds very ominous. I think the idea of trading Jansen for a starter is fine for academic debate, but has little connection to realistic possibilities.

With Martin and Slaten on the IL, I'm not seeing the bullpen as clearly in better shape than the rotation.

The main point is that if the Red Sox want to make a playoff run, they need help in both the rotation and the bullpen. Trading Jansen for a starter would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I think we may have been over this before LOL Ask Theo Epstein or Chris Young - they're the ones who gave up a lot for Chapman. I think they have pretty good baseball minds.

Well yeah, but the IP tend to be critical ones, and that's exactly why closers have landed such big returns at the deadline.

Yes, but you would need some kind of crystal ball to project 2023 Ragans's numbers with the Rangers, where he'd been moved to the bullpen, to his numbers with the Royals - and it happened almost literally overnight. Normally in a deal like this you don't get such immediate help in return.

It's no simple question or answer. In hindsight the trade of Ragans for Chapman was sheer madness on the part of the Rangers. But Ragans's numbers with the Rangers were not good, and I have to assume their internal evaluation of him had slipped for some reason. The 2023 Royals had no shot at the playoffs, so this isn't a parallel situation with trading Jansen. My answer would be no for 2 reasons: 1) trading Jansen would infuriate Red Sox players and fans alike for good reason; 2) it's extremely unlikely the next Ragans is out there - we might not see such a lopsided deadline trade for a long time.

I strongly dispute that Price and Sale were "stupid acquisitions". I think they were acquisitions that were absolutely necessary at the time - assuming that the Red Sox were actually interested in things like, you know, winning games, making the playoffs, winning the World Series. Henry obviously believes there is a better way than throwing piles of money at starting pitchers. I understand that, but we have yet to see if the new approach will actually pay off.
