  1. It's not just the lack of expenditures, of course. It's that plus a series of disastrous blunders or bad luck, whichever you prefer, with Kluber, Sale and Giolito. Pure Hapless Harry stuff.
  2. Not even trying to distinguish between the two at this point. The Red Sox supposedly have a Run Prevention Unit.
  3. Yeah, we still have a 35% chance according to the projectors. I never used to be a white flagger. I was even with you in 2022 and 2023 in not wanting to sell at the deadline. I'm not the same Sox fan these days. They've made me cynical. And it goes back to 2019 and Henry's decisions to trade Betts/cut payroll/preserve the bottom line over all else.
  4. As of now the Red Sox have given up 5 runs or more in 16 of their last 19 games, including the last 5 in a row. Starting this thread with hopes it gets better, but with the realization it might not. All comments on our run prevention issues are welcome, of course.
  5. True, but you're going to open yourself up for complaints when you're a rich team with a supposedly smart organization, and you keep missing the playoffs. It creates a bias toward thinking these guys don't really know what they're doing...
  6. As much hope as I have for Craig, with the way our pitching is falling apart, he could still get a failing grade for his first season. The pitching was the thing he and Bailey were supposed to fix. After a very promising start it's back to the same old mess, with very little in the way of positives going forward.
  7. Seems like the Royals did what the Red Sox should have done last offseason, with their signings of Lugo and Wacha, who have a combined 5.2 fWAR to date. Along with the near-theft of Ragans, the Royals put together a pretty good rotation in a hurry, and without a massive investment.
  8. And again, the reasons behind trading Sale made some sense in isolation. But when they had no plans to add much to the rotation, it was a stupid thing to do.
  9. In our last 18 games we've given up less than 5 runs 3 times.
  10. Just about everything about our rotation construction has been weird since JH had his big epiphany about the payroll. One gets tired of going back over and over it. The bottom line is, it's still a big problem. And Andrew Bailey could obviously only improve it a little with the tweaks he made. The value of the tweaks seems to have all worn off.
  11. Rich Hill just did a throwing session for interested teams, BTW, and you won't be surprised to hear the Sox were one of them.
  12. ERA by months: 2.62 4.12 4.38 4.91 6.05 Mr. Bailey?
  13. Nate was actually a free agent signing, not an extension. I guess it would be more accurate to say - instead of "since DD was fired" - "since JH let DD know the fun was over."
  14. Grissom already looks like a change of scenery candidate.
  15. 2B is being covered now by Hamilton, Sogard and Gonzalez. I guess Valdez is back too? Gonzalez is the main RH bat there. He has an .813 OPS and is hot. I don't think anyone wants to see Grissom taking his place right now.
  16. Cora said something about Grissom having to work on some things with his hitting - bat path or whatever. I doubt we see much more of him in a Boston uniform this year. Try again in 2025.
  17. And Grissom's contribution to that fWAR was a -0.9. And his numbers have been mediocre at best in Woo. A .333 SLG playing in a hitter's park. He's still not showing any signs of the hitter that he was projected to be.
  18. The last two years they went out and got Kluber and Giolito while dealing Sale. Not the greatest outcomes.
  19. Yep, you and me and every other Sox fan.
  20. Whiffle Man would be preferable.
  21. You missed this piece of wonderful news about 2020: Price decided not to play that year and was not paid a nickel by either the Sox or the Dodgers.
  22. Taking 2 of 3 in both Texas and KC is as good as you could ask for. (And those have traditionally been tough venues for Sox teams.) Can't complain about the way the team is playing. It's just the rotation that looks like a potentially big problem...
  23. We might be seeing a fair number of bullpen games down the stretch...
