And the tight budget and lack of caring were further manifested when Giolito was lost and they did nothing about it. It all fits into the same gloomy picture.

moon, if they were really trying to be competitive this year, they could have: a) Kept Sale and hoped for the best. b) Signed Giolito. c) Obtained a second baseman some other way. (What they really needed was a good fielder, and Grissom is not that.) I get all the reasons that have been presented for the trade. I just find there are holes in all of them. I'm more and more convinced the trade was mainly a result of the tight budget and the lack of actually caring about winning this year.

Well, that seems like the most obvious explanation. But we have no idea how much Henry's budget limitations had to do with it, do we? And then we have the question of why Atlanta thought it was worth a shot if the Sox didn't. But that's just more going around the mulberry bush.

He's a first-rate defender on a team that has historically bad infield defense. I see a need.

So the hope was he pitches well for one year, he leaves and we get an extra draft pick after the second round or whatever it is? That was Breslow's big move to upgrade the rotation? I just don't get how that all makes sense for a team that needs starting pitching NOW. Not seeing much clever, personally. As the guy in Spinal Tap said, there's such a fine line between clever and stupid.

Giolito was a hugely questionable signing too, after 2 months of pitching batting practice, and a contract that guaranteed he would leave after one year if he actually pitched well.

Sam might just opt to go with humor, like when he told the press about Pedroia calling him to plead for some free agent signings and Sam laughing his ass off about it.

Yes, this franchise sure has made some awful trades. Duquette, Epstein and Dombrowski mostly made good trades, so they should be lauded for that.

OK, agreed, but it was still a dumb trade. Bill Lee for Stan Papi is part of Red Sox lore. You're trying to mess up a perfectly good superstitious/downer narrative. I was pretty high when I posted that, admittedly.

It's even worse than that, because when he had a chance to explain himself without being in front of a camera he used it to tell fans they have unrealistic expectations.

Why not? They could have used him in 1979 at least. If they got something in return other than Stan Papi it might have been less embarrassing.

A Cy Young winner would help, for sure. Mind you these Sox are doing their utmost to make even the loss of one a non-factor as far as making or missing the playoffs.

There's a theory that everything changed when RedBird Capital bought a 10% share of Fenway Sports Group a few years ago. It seems that FSG ran into a cash crunch because of COVID, and they got a big infusion of it from RedBird. The theory is that RedBird is guaranteed a hefty annual dividend on their investment, and that is one of the things impacting the Red Sox payroll. It's kind of a conspiracy theory, but it's not totally implausible.

Houck has a 3.3 bWAR and 3.6 fWAR. Those are pretty much textbook solid #2 values. About 2.0 is average, and a #3 is average.
