  1. I would say that they have clearly acknowledged that they have been looking to get another starting pitcher-at the right price. I see no misleading or confusion on that point.
  2. Muggah, man, you are in a certain category of fan that probably shouldn't even be described as a fan. I mean, you loathe and detest just about every single player and every member of management-as well as any other fan who supports the team verbally. To use an analogy, you're kind of like the guy who goes to see someone perform but instead of cheering, heckles the guy mercilessly and pokes fun at the people around him who are cheering. You paid your admission and you're there to see the show, but are you really a fan? I'm not convinced that you are.
  3. No big deal nick. Look at the Yankees brouhaha about Soriano last year and Cashman distancing himself from a move that was made from over his head. The good thing for Cash was that other people helping him with the deals freed up time for him to pursue new lady friends.
  4. Larry did this last offseason too. Just when we were starting to get antsy about another bridge year, he told us all they were hoping to make two major acquisitions, one by trade and one free agent. And lo it came to pass. He seems to be the guy who is sent to reassure us that it's still party time for Sox fans.
  5. How much? Would you like to see us go flying past the Yankees to a $250 million payroll?
  6. Looks like it's about time for Oswalt's agent to give him a slap and tell him to start liking the Red Sox.
  7. Good post.
  8. IMO the perfect scenario for Wake is that he retires but we can summon him to un-retire in emergency situations for the next 10 years. It's not like he has to get in shape to do what he does.
  9. Fred, this is where the line gets crossed. People do not come to a baseball message board to be subjected to other people's diatribes, or threatened with it as if it's a punishment.
  10. I'm also an accountant, in a small private practice.
  11. I agree that the stat save is dumb and overrated. I don't agree that the importance of a strong setup guy and a strong bullpen is overrated. One of the things that killed the Sox last September was the games blown by the bullpen, Bard in particular. Also, the World Series was a clinic in bullpens deciding games. Larussa and Washington were playing almost every game to get 5-6 from their starter and then move to the procession of relievers.
  12. Aha, but judging talent and predicting future performance may be two entirely different things, and GM's also have to make very expensive bets on how players who have performed in the past will perform in the future. Epstein continues to get crushed for Lackey and Crawford. Maybe deservedly so. But I don't think anybody predicted how bad their numbers would be for us.
  13. I was just trying to make a point and to stir up some discussion, which I think it has. When you say 'it ain't that hard', though, I think you're sidestepping the question of why, if it's so easy, GM's throughout baseball keep making massively expensive blunders year after year.
  14. No, there is no comparison betwen rocket science and running a major league team. Rocket science is an exact science dealing with aerodynamic engineering. Running a major league team, i.e. making personnel and financial allocation decisions, is an extremely inexact science, dealing with estimations of human performance values within a highly competitive, economically inefficient, limited and shifting market. No comparison at all.
