Agreed. Every year is a tough year for the manager of the Red Sox-Grady Little nailed it when he said 'in Boston they don't play 162 games, they play 162 seasons'. But this year promises to be especially tough, and as you say if Valentine gets them to the postseason he will have done very well indeed.

I think one of the best comparisons for Drew's contract is Damon's contract with the Yankees. Damon got one year less and $1 million less. If you compare the first four years of Drew's deal with Damon's four years in NY, value-wise they come out pretty close. Damon was more durable and stole more bases. Drew had a higher OPS and was a better fielder. If Drew had gotten 4 years $52 million that would have been about right. The fifth year was a killer.

Yeah, personally I can't wait to see how the genius Valentine handles some of the issues he'll be facing with this pitching staff this year.

Youk got 2 AB's in the ALDS, that was it. As I recall he was a great cheerleader though. Youk and I think it was Cesar Crespo, you can see them with their jackets on being very vocal supporters in the ALCS.

I don't understand. You're criticizing Francona for not leaving starters in past 100-110 pitches, then giving a perfect example of what happens to most starters at 100-110 pitches.

Fair enough, Byrd was probably a bad example. Clemens would have been a better one.

I dunno, if Paul Byrd can get a phone call in 2009, it's far from inconceivable that Tim Wakefield can get one in 2012. Fred just better hope it's not one of the games he books a ticket for.

Yes, it could be ugly. Or we could be fortunate and find the nugget in the dung pile. We're not in a comfortable position, I agree. Personally I accept that it's our reality for this year.

That depends on a lot of things. Catastrophe is a possibility but far from a certainty IMO.

2 questions: -How many postseason games does it take to not be SSS. -Should postseason games be given more weight than reg season games.

Fred, I just can't get as emotional about it anymore. Maybe I've kind of distanced myself from it a bit. I've been following this team for 40+ years and it's taken its toll. Maybe they weren't prepared to start the season. I will readily admit it could be true. But then they played .650 ball for a few months. It was just a really bizarre season. And I have said repeatedly that it was Francona's time to go. But yes, I was a Francona man.
