  1. Friedman has done a great job with the Rays but nobody knows how he would do with a big-market team and a big budget. The Rays don't have busts like Lackey because they can't afford them to begin with. The Rays made sort of a splashy free agent signing when they signed Pat Burrell. And he was a flop.
  2. I'm not big into predicting these things, but I have a good feeling about Bard becoming a starter. Aceves I think is perfect for the role he had last year and I'd like to see him stay there.
  3. OK well my point is, you're comparing the 2012 team to the 2011 team strictly on a player personnel basis, and ignoring the potential improvement from the changeover in managerial and coaching staff. You lauded the Valentine hiring and yet you seem to think he will be impotent in actually improving the team's work ethic, chemistry etc. which was obviously a huge factor in the demise last year.
  4. You're not a Valentine fan?
  5. I'm implying that Terry had a very bad year last year.
  6. Bobby Valentine is worth at least 5 games in the standings over last year, right? That has to put us in the low 90's on paper right there, regardless of upgrades.
  7. Sewage salvage?
  8. I like the Hi Ho Silva and Short Order Cook nicknames. Sounds like Chris Berman stuff.
  9. We're still under the old system in which the rates were 22.5, 30, 40. 2012 would be our third year in a row over the cap so the rate will be 40% for 2012. I confirmed this in a couple of places. Under the new system there will be 4 rates-17.5, 30, 40, 50.
  10. Anything over the cap this year costs them 140% of the regular price, though, right? So it stings.
  11. The Red Sox are going to sign one of these 'name' starters, I'm pretty sure of it now. They're not too happy about another chunk of money going out the door, but they know they can't go into the season like this from a baseball standpoint or a PR one.
  12. That is so true. You seem to be a fine person. But your opinions are full of s***.
  13. I thought this was in line with what you wanted to see this year: 'rebuilding' by hanging onto money and prospects since we're not going anywhere anyway.
  14. LOL, true, most Yankee fans I heard from thought there was a very good chance Colon and Garcia were both going to stink and couldn't believe that's what they were going into the season with.
  15. The Penny signing didn't work very well, no question, and Smoltz was just a washout. What's funny about Penny, though, is that he moved on to 3 other teams after leaving us. In 2010 the Cardinals paid him 7.5 million for only 55 innings work. Some junk really moves around.
  16. Baldelli only made 500K. He was an OK pickup for utility OF, .744 OPS, 7 HR, 23 RBI in 150AB.
  17. That is true. A few guys at another forum I post on broke down all the numbers though, and it wasn't just Beckett that produced the good numbers with Varitek. Anyway I don't want to open up all the 'he calls a good game' stuff.
  18. And I agree with you. I just don't think it's necessarily Bowden's delivery that's his problem.
  19. Varitek's numbers last year, though, would tend to support the view that giving up a lot of stolen bases won't kill you if the pitching is good. In his 68 games the opposition had 73 stolen bases in 85 attempts. Pretty bad numbers. But the opposition only scored 3.57 earned runs per game when Varitek was catching.
  20. Wouldn't you say his delivery is like Foulke's?
