  1. From what I've seen, they're probably going over the 178 million cap whether or not they sign Oswalt. It sounds to me like they've set a budget maximum which might be 5 million over the cap or something like that.
  2. One thing nobody's mentioned is how much say Queen Linda might have in all of this.
  3. George Steinbrenner wasn't 'baseball people' until he bought the Yankees.
  4. I'm not really saying he's an eccentric. What I'm saying is: -I think he might be more of a baseball guy than people realize. -The Red Sox are not just any old financial asset. -He's already got exponentially more money and more assets than any human needs. Are the Steinbrenners eccentrics?
  5. Speculation is a lot of fun. I wouldn't be surprised if JH hangs onto the Sox for awhile just because it's what people are thinking he won't do.
  6. That's just about what I'm saying. Not far away from reasons for optimism. Almost sounds like a consensus was reached here today. Except for Fred who still thinks it's all one big clusterf**k.
  7. According to MLBTR Wheeler is still a free agent.
  8. Friedman has done a great job with the Rays but nobody knows how he would do with a big-market team and a big budget. The Rays don't have busts like Lackey because they can't afford them to begin with. The Rays made sort of a splashy free agent signing when they signed Pat Burrell. And he was a flop.
  9. I'm not big into predicting these things, but I have a good feeling about Bard becoming a starter. Aceves I think is perfect for the role he had last year and I'd like to see him stay there.
  10. OK well my point is, you're comparing the 2012 team to the 2011 team strictly on a player personnel basis, and ignoring the potential improvement from the changeover in managerial and coaching staff. You lauded the Valentine hiring and yet you seem to think he will be impotent in actually improving the team's work ethic, chemistry etc. which was obviously a huge factor in the demise last year.
  11. You're not a Valentine fan?
  12. I'm implying that Terry had a very bad year last year.
  13. Bobby Valentine is worth at least 5 games in the standings over last year, right? That has to put us in the low 90's on paper right there, regardless of upgrades.
  14. Sewage salvage?
  15. I like the Hi Ho Silva and Short Order Cook nicknames. Sounds like Chris Berman stuff.
  16. We're still under the old system in which the rates were 22.5, 30, 40. 2012 would be our third year in a row over the cap so the rate will be 40% for 2012. I confirmed this in a couple of places. Under the new system there will be 4 rates-17.5, 30, 40, 50.
