  1. I think your opinion that Cherington had lots more money to play with is in the extreme minority. Even Pumpsie, on the other thread, is talking about how Cherington's hands were tied financially.
  2. So how much more money did Cherington have to spend that he didn't spend, nick? Do you have the answer to that? It doesn't have to be exact, just an estimate within a few million would be fine. I'm sure you can derive that from what Lucchino said, your interpretive skills are remarkable.
  3. No you don't have them. Nobody said the Lux tax wasn't an issue, and nobody gave any indication what the actual budget was. Lucchino pointed out the payroll was going to be high and that lux tax was going to be incurred. Big difference.
  4. Are you serious? You really think Cherington was the one who decided to pinch pennies this year?
  5. The history consists of 3 years-2006, 2008, 2010. 2010 he was injured. 2006 was his first year in the AL and yes, he got hammered. 2008 was not that bad at all if you look past the ERA. His WHIP was better than career average and his SO/BB ratio was a career best. And in 2007 he had a great year after throwing 204 innings the year before so the workload thing didn't apply there. There might be something to the alternate year stuff, but the underlying data here doesn't add up to much.
  6. Right, but we might sort of retroactively change the mark later on. Epstein probably scored high marks last offseason. Then Crawford sucks, Lackey bites, Dice-K, Buchholz and Jenks disappear, the team royally implodes and Epstein is out of town.
  7. I gave him a B. That's kind of a namby-pamby vote, but it's a little early to judge the results of the offseason. As has been said frequently, Cherington wasn't given much financial room to play with. I kind of like all the dumpster pitching acquisitions-something has to come of it, right? Ah hell, I'm a pollyanna, what can I say.
  8. LOL how cynical...and probably accurate.
  9. Heyman is one of the more reliable beat writers though. He seems to have a good inside connection, I think it might be Boras.
  10. 'Interesting' is the word that comes to mind when I think about this year. For once maybe I'll just relax, and watch things unfold with no expectations. But if they start 8-2, I know that damn optimism will kick in again.
  11. Some people see the glass as half-full. Some people see it as half-empty. Accountants see the glass as too damn big, and recommend a sizing adjustment on future orders.
  12. Jeff Passan had a story about Oswalt that seemed plausible. The gist of it was that Oswalt is only interested in playing for the Rangers or the Cards. Neither team has a rotation opening, but Oswalt may be prepared to wait until there's opening through injury or ineffectiveness.
  13. Wouldn't following through on that that mean paying Epstein for a year to do nothing? And not getting any compensation whatsoever? Hard to see how that would be a beneficial move.
  14. We're getting Carpenter and a PTBNL.
  15. They should have done it like a salary arbitration, where Selig could only pick one. That would have forced them to come up with reasonable offers.
  16. Epstein put a very strong team on the field at the start of 2011. A lot of weird s*** happened, from injuries to the pitching collapse. You could blame some of that stuff on him, but some of it was just s***** luck as far as the GM's involvement in it.
  17. I'm glad Mark Belanger's name came up. I'll be happy if that's the guy Iglesias is ultimately compared to.
