  1. Floyd's ERA is lacklustre but his peripherals are much better. Also his career numbers at Fenway are very good. Some other people I've read think Floyd would be a great fit for the Sox.
  2. Here's an updated payroll projection from Alex Speier at WEEI. Speier figures the payroll for tax purposes is going to come in at about 185 million. He also explains why there is no lux tax relief on Lackey's deal. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2012/01/26/budget-isnt-problem-another-look-red-sox-payro http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2012/01/26/a-look-at-the-updated-red-sox-payroll-and-correcting-the-record-on-john-lackeys-deal/
  3. Oswalt is a better pitcher. Jackson looks like a better bet to be durable at this point. On the ERA+ matter, I use that stat myself. But we have seen quite a few pitchers do poorly when they move from the NL to the AL.
  4. To me if they can pick up someone like Oswalt or Jackson for a one year deal for less than 8 million they should do it. I understand your point, but I'm not comfortable with our pitching depth going into the season. There might be a great move available at the trade deadline but that's 2/3 into the season.
  5. I don't think it's imperative that they stay under for 2012. The new rules, where there's a new incentive added for being under the threshold, don't take effect until 2013.
  6. Have faith man, the pitcher is next. And Benny is working on JH right now to expand the budget just a tiny bit.
  7. How about one more year of Youk at third, then he takes over as DH and backup 1B/3B?
  8. Has to be it, doesn't it. They'll be a fun team to watch on offence, maybe even moreso on defence.
  9. Good point. Lackey may have been yet another victim of Dr. Thomas 'We don't MRI bruises' Gill.
  10. Ross had 5 HR in the 2010 postseason and he was the MVP of the NLCS win over Philly.
  11. I'd say they're giving more weight to career numbers. Ross has a career OPS of .912 against lefties in 759 PA. McDonald has a .799 in 377 PA. And Ross is 2 years younger.
  12. Benny Boy rocks.
  13. Anyone who's interested in the luxury tax and where it's headed under the new agreement should read this. It's an eye-opener. It explains why under the new agreement teams will be even more discouraged from exceeding the threshold, because of the added penalty on revenue sharing recovery. As the writer said, it's surprising that the players union agreed to this. http://www.cnbc.com/id/45554847/Did_The_Baseball_Union_Make_a_Colossal_Mistake
  14. Benny Boy never rests.
  15. The 2003 team came pretty close.
  16. Yeah, it was. To me it does show that Benny Boy is out there working on the goal of getting us another starter.
  17. The preseason prognostications aren't worth s***, I totally agree there. Predicting pro sports with any consistency is impossible. What I'm saying is that the oddsmakers aren't really trying to predict results, they're just setting lines for people to wager on.
  18. There's a breaking rumor that the Red Sox are working to trade Scutaro to the Rockies. No other details yet.
  19. I'll say this: if Oswalt signs with someone else for 6-7 million, a big chunk of RSN is gonna be royally pissed. And I know the Sox FO knows this.
  20. Pumpsie, I think you're getting a little too excited about the future benefit of staying under the cap this year. Let's say we do, and that our tax rate for 2013 is 'only' 17.5% or whatever it is. Do you really think that's going to entice them to go over the cap by a big chunk in 2013 and move into the 200 million range?
