  1. Anybody that thinks we should have said adios to Ortiz and gone with Lavarnway at DH needs to take a look at what that lineup would look like.
  2. Shoppach's overall offensive numbers, needless to say, are very s*****.
  3. Okay, I'm going to take a shot at clarifying the 2012 payroll for luxury tax purposes, based on Alex Speier's numbers. Here we go: 1 Gonzalez 22.00 2 Crawford 20.29 3 Beckett 17.00 4 Lackey 16.50 5 Ortiz 14.58 6 Youkilis 10.31 7 Matsuzaka 8.67 8 Ellsbury 8.05 9 Buchholz 7.38 10 Pedroia 6.80 11 Lester 6.00 12 Jenks 6.00 13 Bailey 3.90 14 Ross 3.00 15 Salty 2.50 16 Iglesias 2.06 17 Sweeney 1.75 18 Bard 1.61 19 Punto 1.50 20 Shoppach 1.35 21 Aceves 1.28 22 Aviles 1.20 23 Albers 1.05 24 Miller 1.04 25 Morales 0.85 25 man total 166.67 26-40 man total 8.00 Benefits 10.50 Bonuses 2.00 Total 187.17 The 26-40 number represents players like Tazawa, Melancon, McDonald, Doubrant etc. who complete the 40 man roster. Some of their salaries are not finalized yet, but none of them will be much more than 500K. According to Speier, we are not getting any relief in 2012 from the club option for a 6th year in Lackey's contract. Any questions?
  4. Spitball, here are 2 examples, and I'm very confident I'm right on this: 1) A-Gon extension. When the Sox acquired him he had one year remaining on his contract for $6 million. They signed him to a 7 year extension for $154 million after Opening Day of 2011. Therefore his salary for 2011 for LT purposes was $6 million. For 2012-2018 it will be $22 million per year, the average value. If he had signed the extension before Opening Day, it would have become in effect an 8 year deal for $160 million, or $20 million per year from 2011-2018. 2) Billy Wagner trade. Wagner's salary that year with the Mets was about $10 million. The Red Sox traded for him in August. The amount of his salary that they carried for LT purposes was their pro-rated portion of the $10 million-about $3 million.
  5. It's two different things, Spitball-the rules pertaining to mid-season trades and the rules pertaining to the timing of signing contract extensions.
  6. With regard to Oswalt's health, things have really taken a turn here toward pessimism. I would agree that there are concerns, but he did make all of his starts from August on. And he has been meeting with teams. I don't think the fact that no one has signed him means that everyone's been going over his medical records with him.
  7. The killer there, though, is the 40% LT. 10 million = 14 million.
  8. Absolutely true. A lot of long-term big-money contracts were in place coming into this year. But I think 'austerity' is a very relative term when they're spending at this level.
  9. Here is the link to Speier's numbers. It hasn't been updated since Jan. 26 but it doesn't take much work to bring it up to now. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2012/01/26/budget-isnt-problem-another-look-red-sox-payro
  10. User, it's a lock that the Sox are over the LT threshold. Alex Speier's numbers show we're going to be at least $190 million for LT purposes.
  11. A little crazy, isn't it.
  12. Actual testing and the example of Manny are two reasons I can think of.
  13. It's a valid question about Scutaro, no doubt. I don't think we're going to get an answer. In my opinion they set a budget ceiling (one which is above the LT threshold) and calculated that they would have to move Scutaro in order to sign Oswalt or whoever. But I agree that moving Scutaro could turn out to be an unwise decision for this year's team.
  14. When I think of Yankee overpays, I think of a lot more than a few million dollars total.
  15. Some hitters have continued to rake into their late thirties. It's certainly not the norm but there have been exceptions.
  16. So the answer to the question 'who was the last Sox player to go to arbitration?' will still be Rolando Arrojo.
  17. Plainly spoken.
  18. Thanks, and you're right about CP's pictures. I didn't bother saying anything there because the place was so out of control.
  19. Yes, I think there are 30 interleague games in 2013. That means a non-fielding DH is going to automatically miss 15 games, almost 10% of the schedule.
  20. That's a question that deserves a long discussion. Can a player's behaviour become a distraction and negatively affect the team? I would have to say yes. It's one of those intangibles nobody can measure though.
  21. Pedro became a diva later in his career with the Sox too Fred. Maybe it's a case of all the adulation getting to someone's head. Hopefully Ortiz will realize how well paid he is and focus on baseball.
  22. Pumpsie, take it easy on those animated pictures, please. I'm not trying to censor you on this, seriously, but I find them really distracting and hard on the eyes...they give me a headache.
  23. Yes, I know he said that. But it doesn't mean they hadn't been trying to add another starter or that they aren't still trying. What exactly are you reading into what he said?
